Chapter 3

Carmilla

.

.

.

I woke up to the sound of luggages and other things being moved. I shrugged and got up from the bed as I stretched my body, still sore but slightly better now. I was distracted by a soft knock on the door.

“Come in.”

The door creaked open and I saw Evans standing there. He was already prepared.

“Are you okay now?” he said with a straight look as ever.

“You don't have to pretend you care , it's just the both of us here.” I looked around bitterly.

His jaw clenched then he let out a sigh “Get ready and come downstairs” he said, shutting the door behind him.

I sat down back on the bed to remove the wedding gown I was currently on and changed to a black short cotton gown. I wondered what was waiting for me at the new packhouse.

I went downstairs to see Aunt Freya waiting to see me off. She didn't have to pretend like she also cared about me. I hated her hypocrisy.

“Where's your wedding dress?” She looked at me with a scornful face.

“It's upstairs. It got tiring to walk in.” I replied snappy

She came closer and clutched my cheeks.“You better be grateful for all this. You must never let them find out about the secret and don't try anything stupid over there, got it?” she said while releasing my face.

I didn't respond to her. I went outside to see a car waiting for me.

A butler was at the side of the car door. He opened the door and I got in.

Silence filled the air, not that I was bothered about it. I started tracing the pattern on my dress and after a while Evans turned to look at me.

“Look I know this is all sudden for you but there will be duties awaiting you once we arrive.”

I didn't respond. I leaned towards the door and stared at the pretty bed of flowers at the roadside and the bird flying freely across the sky.

“Must be nice.” I mumbled to myself.

“I'm trying to build a relationship between us but you are clearly not interested. I didn't want all this too.”

“Well good to know” I huffed.

We finally arrived at the packhouse after a few hours of silence. It was huge.

Every step i took echoed across the hallways. The wall were stone, the ceilings high, and the chandelier dimly lit.

The air was smelled like pine, leather and something else– something sweet.

Vanilla.

Couple of servants moved past me, whispering to each other. Some with pity. Others with rejection.

I ignored them.

When we got to a set of large wooden doors, one of the servants pushed them open.

I hesitated.

The room was big. Bigger than I expected. A grand bed set against the wall, covered in dark sheets. The fireplace cracked faintly but the air was still cold. Tall windows that stretched from the floor to the ceiling, letting in the moonlight.

Well fit for an Alpha.

And then, there was him.

Evans.

He stood near the bed unbuttoning his shirt. He didn't even look at me.

I swallowed.

The doors shut behind me, leaving us alone in the room.

The silence went on for a little while.

Then I forced myself to speak. “Where do I sleep?”

Evans didn't answer right away. He tossed his shirt onto a chair before finally turning to me.

“Not with me.”

He grabbed a pillow and threw it on the couch.

“You can have the bed.” He said flatly.

I blinked. That was… surprising.

I expected him to tell me to sleep in a separate room. Or on the couch, and worst, on the floor. But he turned away like he didn't care at all.

We barely had a conversation again after tossing the pillow on the couch. I ran a hand down my arm, feeling goosebumps over my skin. The unfamiliar room made me uneasy. Everything screamed wealth and power. The tall oak wardrobe, the thick drapes, the mini bookshelf neatly stacked with books.

I exhaled deeply and stood up. Maybe walking around would stop my mind from spinning.

My eyes landed on a small vanity near the window. A silver comb rested on the smooth surface, reflecting the faint glow of the fire. I walked towards it, my bare feet silent against the floor.

As I reached for the comb, my elbow bumped into something else.

A glass figurine.

It wobbled once, then twice.

I lunged forward, but it was too late.

The figurine crashed to the floor, breaking into tiny pieces.

I froze, my breath caught in my throat.

The couch creaked behind me.

“What the hell was that?” Evan’s voice was sharp, masked in irritation.

I swallowed hard. “It was an accident.”

He sighed heavily. Though i didn't turn around, but I could feel his glare burning into my back.

I crouched down, carefully picking up the shreds on the floor. My hands slightly trembled as I gathered them into a pile, but the pieces were too small.

I bit my lips. “I'll clean it up.”

Evans muttered something under his breath before getting up. His footsteps were quiet but firm as he walked towards me .

I braced myself for a harsh remark but he just moved past me. The door creaked open and few seconds later, he came back with a servant.

“Step aside and let him tidy it up.”

“Okay, thanks.” I said softly.

He didn't respond back. He stood there running his hand through his hair looking exhausted, before he turned away and walked towards the chair.

I was too tired to keep standing too, so I crawled back to bed.

The room was silent again but it was different this time.

It was probably because of the third party.

I pulled my blanket to my chin, staring at the ceiling.

I wasn't sure what was worse – Aunt Freya's house or bring trapped here with strange moments in between when Evans wasn't harsh…. just distance.

Chapter 84...Camilla"Excuse us!" We simultaneously thunderously screamed in her face. Her cheeks instantly flushed with a bright tint of cherry red, like ripened fruit. It must be the wave of embarrassment washing over her. And for once, I was pleased with Evans. She threw her hands up in exasperation, grumbling like a teenager before storming past us. Her small hips swayed with each step, her hips meeting the sides of her hands in a fluid motion, as if she were catwalking down a runway. We both watched her leave, our eyes fixed on her retreating figure. I hissed loudly and sighed in relief, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders."It was an ordeal, Camilla." He added, his voice low and gravelly. "We could have..." He paused, biting his lip, and exhaled loudly. "I could have lost my life." He stressed the word "I", his eyes locking onto mine. I nodded, unsure if he needed my sympathy or if he deserved it."What about the Jade serpent?" I was curious. "Was it captured?" He wa

Chapter 83Camilla's POV There was a sudden turmoil in the courtroom, as the elders began to murmur and point like they were just hearing the news.A thin teenage boy, fierce and commanding, stepped forward and yelled at the elders, calling them to order. I felt a thick lump in my throat as I panicked. Like little kids, their voices subsided, and Russell Reeds could speak on."After a thorough investigation, the park must tender an apology to the lady for the false accusations." He said. The courtroom exploded with voices from different corners. I felt a heavyweight burden fly off my chest, leaving me weak such that my knee gave way, leading me to the floor.I let out a sharp cry of relief. They wouldn't understand."The snake was caught with a worshipper." He narrated.Just this moment, I felt that Russell Reeds was just and benevolent, but I knew from the depth of my heart that something was wrong. What could be wrong? My name is cleared.Russell Reeds is tendering and open apology

Chapter 82 ...ColeBut it stopped abruptly, right at his feet, but it let out a loud shriek directed towards him.Truly, he trembled down to his ankles. I watched him stagger backwards, while reaching for his back pocket. And his hand came at the snake with a short silver dagger. Again, the serpent shrieked. This time, the dust on the floor was stirred, lifting particles which took the form of a hand and slapped the dagger off his hand swiftly. The same hand made out of dust particles was left hanging at his face.Jethro shook his head, gritting his teeth tight. "You sneaky serpent!" He yelled. The serpent curled high and erect, hissing angrily. The dust-made hand was raised to land a hefty slap across Jethro's cheek on both sides immediately.I really did see his dark pupils go upwards as though he was convulsing. He fell to the floor and blacked out instantly."Pheeew!" I exclaimed, smiling while in bondage.I checked Evans to see that he was wide awake, watching the unfolds of

He had two extra cigars waving at us."Alpha!" His squared chiselled Jaw was more pronounced with the smile he gave.Evans waved as we approached. Jethro threw the cigars at us, and we caught rapidly. We all had a smile on our faces. He passed lighter and patted the stone on which he sat, indicating that we joined his sitting."What brings you here?" He asked."Likewise you." Evans replied. "What brings you here?" He asked."Yeah." I added.Jethro leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, as though he planned to say something really serious, but he actually didn't say a word for about one long minute. He sapped out of his cigar stick and puffed it upwards before sparing us a glance."To learn about 'em." • Alpha's Bargain, Luna's curse    She's Busy

Chapter 80...ColeThe cranky door gave way with only a little push from Evans. On the small wide bedding with worn out cotton, the woman sat with her legs folded inside out. Her eyes were shut and she counted her fingers, muttering some words. The woman forced her way through us and blocked our path again."She is busy." She spread her arms."We can wait." I said."Here." Evans added. She sighed and strotted out.The small dusty room was barely lit, but we could make out what was in it. A small black cat seemed to appear from nowhere. It's green eyes glowed in it's dark skin. I could've sworn it's eyes looked enticingly glorious. She was finally done with her prayers or whatever, because she dropped her hands to her thighs. But the moment she opened her eyes, I saw a bright green glow, just like the cat's.Initially, I would have doubted my very own eyes, but I vividly recall seeing the cat. Chapter 79...Carmilla The guards began to march; this time, even faster. My eyes searched around for a reason. Two men stopped before Cole and Evans. "The jade serpent has escaped," he said in a state of panic. I felt Evans' cold hand against mine. "Where did you go?" His eyes bore into mine this time. "Everything points towards you. If you cannot defend where you were,..." He kissed his teeth and looked at Cole. "I'm afraid we can't defend her either." "I did not help any escape. I... I..." I placed both hands on my head, as it spun. "My Lord!" Katrina yelled as she bowed. "The lady knows nothing about the jade serpent," she said. "Then, do you?" Cole asked. With fear that Katrina might confess, while covering my tracks, I also bowed. "She also knows nothing!" My voice was firm. "Speak!" Evans yelled, as though he didn't hear my statement."There was a man," Katrina said. "A masked man." Her voice was shaky, as she bit her lower lip, in regret. I exhaled loudly. "He is
