As the night progressed, smoke grew denser in the air.
Since starting as a bartender at the crowded bar a month ago, Aislinn worked her way down the line of customers, filling drink orders as she went. She had taken the job when she first arrived in town, and her sleazy boss Derrick was more than happy to hire her. He had recently lost a bar tender and Aislinn was above average in appearance even if she didn't think so. When Aislinn had applied to the job, he hadn't even asked if she could mix drinks. He figured that he could teach that. She wasn't a super model but she was attractive in a strange way and she was better than the nothing that he had. Derrick was at the far end of the bar talking with some regulars. Aislinn had learned relatively quickly to keep space between herself and Derrick. Derrick was an ass. He was always grabbing her and making lewd comments. In this place the best spot to be in was behind the bar where the only person who could grab you was Derrick. Anywhere else and you were fair game for all the jerks who came in the place. He had even attacked her once. But she had slugged him and gotten away. The other people she worked with were mostly nice. Kelly was really the only bitch and that was because Aislinn had gotten the job Kelly had wanted. Kelly figured that she had been there longer, had devoted her time and deserved the bartender job. When Derrick gave it to Aislinn, he had made Kelly a permanent enemy for her. Aislinn hated the place. But she needed the job. She needed the money. As Aislinn moved from one person to the next along the bar, she approached the new guy who had sat down at the bar near the wall. He was impressive. His approach had resulted in most of the other patrons making more than enough room for him, resulting in an unnatural amount of space at that end of the bar. Aislinn was perfectly happy to have a short lull in the number of people she had to deal with. The man was pretty big, even sitting on the stool. He had black hair and brown-black eyes and was tanned. He looked hard muscled even under the black leather duster he was wearing. But the strangest thing was this ageless appearance to him. At first look she might have said he was in his late twenties/early thirties. But at second glance he looked almost 100. Whether that was normal for him or was the fact that he looked as though he'd had the worst day of his life was up for grabs. "What can I get you?" The guy looked up at her as if he only just realized that he was in a bar. Aislinn waited and when he didn't respond she asked again. "What can I get you?" Cullen stared at the girl speaking to him appraisingly. She had an odd scent. It was hard to make out between the rancid smell of the bar, the smoke from the people around him soaking into everything, and some awful perfume she seemed to have bathed in. But there was something to it that caught his attention. She was attractive but she wasn't remarkable in any way. She had brown hair, blue eyes, pale skin, and medium build. She wasn't his type. I would probably break her, he thought and grinned at himself. Besides she wasn't what he was here for. The last thing he wanted was a woman tonight. No matter how intriguing her scent was. "If you're not ready to order I can come back in a couple," Aislinn offered at his silence and the annoyed, confused look on his face as he stared at her. "Guinness." Aislinn nodded, poured the beer and placed it in front of him. No sooner had she waited on the next person but he was pushing his glass toward her. She gave him another. Then another. At first she was concerned. He didn't look very friendly and adding drunk to not very friendly usually didn't end well. But he kept himself to himself, paid for each glass as he indicated his need for a refill, and didn't do anything to bother her or anyone else. He just stared at his glass and drank. Something about him that she couldn't quite put her finger on kept everyone else away. Aislinn really wasn't sure what kept drawing her attention back to him. The smell of him disturbed her. Since she had escaped her last job she'd had a sharper sense of smell. But after everything she'd been through to this point she kept herself to herself and that included telling anyone that she could tell who she was talking to with her eyes closed. Smells always got to her very easily. When she got out into the big wide world she had started layering on perfumes just to mask the smells around her. But tonight his smell was getting through her defenses. He smelled foul or dead. At least that was the only way she could describe it. She didn't know what could possibly make that odor. But every time the air shifted she nearly flinched at the awful reek that overpowered even the smell of rancid beer in this place. God why did I decide bartending was a good idea, she thought to herself. Cullen was still sitting there drinking as the place was getting ready to close. The girl who had been serving him all night walked up to him as she was clearing the bar. "Hey, buddy, do you need me to call you a cab or something?" "Cullen," he said before he knew that he had said it. "What?" Aislinn stopped what she was doing and started reaching for a phone. "Is there someone I can call for you?" she reiterated. "My name. Cullen. Not 'buddy'. And no, I don't need a ride. I'll walk." He started to get up and then realized that he had drank more than he originally thought. It's been a long time since I managed to get drunk, he thought with a measure of amusement. That's exactly why I came here, right? He took a seat on the bar stool again. Aislinn let out a sigh and glanced at one of the other girls. "Okay, Cullen," she said hesitantly. "Look, we're about to close, and you're too intoxicated to go anywhere. You've got to have a friend somewhere who'll come get you." He looked up at her and smirked with a hint of amusement. "Yeah," he replied, "a whole pack.""I'm going with them," Mila said quietly, not looking at Dante as she spoke. She didn't need to see his expression to know he would be furious at her announcement. It wasn't that she wanted to hurt him, she just knew that this was the right thing to do. If he didn't want to throw his hand into the mix, then that was his choice. She, however, had never really had a choice, not since the moment she'd had her vision of the Justice Seeker. When the expected explosion didn't materialise, she turned in his direction, but he was sitting so still her vision wouldn't come to her. "Dante?" It was unlike him to be so silent. He always made some subtle movement so she could effectively see."Have you had another vision? One that I am not aware of?" he finally asked, tilting his head to the side as he spoke.Mila let out a small breath, relieved that she could now see his expression though he was giving nothing away. "No, but I don't need to have another vision. I have known since the first one th
She was staring at him as if he were insane. For some reason he didn't find that as pleasurable as he usually did. "The vampire who struck you...I killed him. I was going to make him suffer but Dara wasn't too impressed with that idea. I can heal your bruise with my blood if you'd like."Natalia stared at the man Pippa called Monster, and he truly was a monster. He appeared to only be a few years older than she was, but that was where any point of common reference ended. He thought telling her that he had killed someone was some kind of badge of honour? Then he offered to let her drink his blood as if that was normal too? What kind of lunatic was he?"No, I don't want to drink your blood. Seriously? You think that's socially acceptable? Just the thought of it makes me want to throw up, and don't think I haven't forgotten that you were ready to put my mother out of her misery. Stay away from me, Kothari or Agony or whoever the hell you are. I don't need your help and I don't want to be
Dara headed over to Dante and Mila, leaving Natalia with her mother and Pippa. She was reasonably happy that the danger point with Ava had been averted for now; she just wasn't sure what to do with the situation without talking to Rafe. Before she did that, she wanted to make sure the female vampire was healing okay. She had promised Dante she would help his friend."Do you need some blood to help you heal?" she asked, kneeling down beside the couple. The other woman looked up as she spoke, a smile crossing her pretty face. "Thank you, but that won't be necessary. I have fed from Dante and I am almost back to full strength." She sat up, shooing Dante as he kept his arms around her. "Stop now, I am fine, Dante. I want to hear about the girl and her mother.""You almost died, woman. I told you not to reveal yourself without me. I'll bloody well hover for as long as it takes my heart to start beating normally." There was censure in his voice but also concern. His words just made Mila smi
"Mackenzie!" Lily groaned, pushing at his chest and conceding defeat quickly when he wouldn't let go. "You can't keep me locked up here at the compound. It's like being in a prison." It wasn't really, how could being in her mate's loving embrace ever be like a prison? However, her frustration was riding her hard, and she was desperate for a little freedom.Karn snorted loudly and rolled his eyes again. "Your idea of a prison and everyone else's is vastly different, Liliana.""I can deal with my mate without your assistance," Mac interjected, feeling the tenseness of Lily's body in his arms. She was coiled so tightly he was starting to feel concerned. Her agitation couldn't be good for her or the baby. "Honey, we've had this conversation before. You agreed to stay here at the compound.""Not all of the time, Mac," she muttered against his chest. "I want to be able to go visit the pack and see my friends. I need a little freedom." She looked up at him, seeing the stubborn set of his mou
"Has there been any word from Dara?" Lily's hand absent-mindedly stroked her abdomen as she asked the question, her gaze concerned."She hasn't reported in officially yet, but I heard she called Aaron to ask how to stop a she-wolf going rogue. She didn't explain what was going on but said she would report in soon," her brother answered, the frown marring his brow a clear indicator he was as concerned as she was."It doesn't feel right, Kal," Lily sighed, rising from her bed and pacing across to the window. "Kothi and Dara shouldn't be out there alone in a hostile environment. We should be with them, helping to find Gard and Rayne." Her tone was laced with an irritation she didn't even try to hide in front of her brother. It was pointless, as he knew her far too well. They were in her bedroom at the Praetorian compound. Mac had decided that the recent upheaval of the attack against the pack and Kothari's disappearance was too much stress for Lily to cope with in her current condition,
Kothari ran, his paws flying over the forest floor as if all the shades of hell were after him. He had to run, had to try to escape the enormity of what had almost just happened. How could he? How could Agony have been so blind, so out of control that he hadn't been aware of what was right in front of him? Agony had to have been aware on some sub-conscious level, as he'd reacted in fury when the vampire had struck her, but that moment had vanished in the midst of his other half's insanity bare moments later, and he had almost killed them all. He'd almost killed her. Not just the strange girl who had come out of nowhere, but her mother too. It was just like...just like all those years ago when he was born...Agony tried to destroy everything that they loved."Stop, Kothari!""Fuck off! I hate you! Leave us alone! You're toxic, Agony. All you can do is lash out and destroy everything we hold dear. We are stronger than you. Together we will excise you forever and you'll never hurt anyone
