The return to Blackmoon Academy was nothing short of a blur.

Lucian walked with a protective arm around Rayne’s waist, guiding her through the whispering shadows of the forest. Neither spoke much. She was too exhausted. He was too tense. Blood—his and hers—still clung to their torn clothes, and the forest’s dark magic felt like it still clung to their skin. The Trial of Shadows had taken more than just their strength.

It had unearthed secrets.

And now, they carried those secrets with every step.

When they crossed the boundary stone marking the edge of the Trial grounds, a magical flare lit up in the distance. The signal.

They had made it out alive.

Barely.

A pair of instructors appeared moments later, faces etched in surprise. Survivors were rare in the Trial of Shadows—especially new recruits survivors.

The instructors asked no questions though, as Lucian and Rayne walked in looking like they’d crawled from the underworld itself.

The hearing chamber was a cold, towering space carved into the oldest wing of Blackmoon Academy. The walls were made of thick, gray stone, etched with sigils from the earliest packs—testaments to a time when power was proven with blood and fire, not rules and regulation.Rayne stood beside Lucian at the center of the room, her hands clenched tightly behind her back. Her heartbeat thudded in her ears, almost louder than the voices echoing around them.Instructor Rhys Calloway paced in front of the tribunal.“To reiterate, the complaint claims that Lucian Wolfe and Rei Valen entered the Trial of Shadows together and remained together throughout, which would constitute a direct violation of academy instructions given to them.”Across the dais, the panel of senior Alphas sat like judges—silent, stern, and intimidating.Calloway’s voice lowered. “And yet—no concrete proof has been presented.”Murmurs rustled through the chamber.“No witnesses saw them cross paths. No evidence they fought a

The infirmary was quiet.Even in a place where pain lingered like perfume, there was a strange kind of peace here. A hush between walls, filled with the scent of healing salves, soft footsteps, and whispered recoveries.Rayne hesitated just outside the arched doorway, her hand on the frame, heart thudding in her chest. A lot has changed since the accident.Jace had been in and out of consciousness for days after the accident. When she first heard he’d woken, she was so relieved. Now, facing the polished ironwood doors of the infirmary, she stepped inside quietly. The air was cool and sterile. Thin linen curtains swayed in the breeze drifting from the open high windows. At the far end of the room, tucked beneath a patch of filtered sunlight, lay Jace.Awake. Sitting up. He's body was still heavily bandaged.Rayne paused. He looked pale, thinner than before, but his posture was the same—solid, alert. His dark hair was mussed, falling over one brow, and his expression unreadable as he sc

The day after the summons, tension threaded through the academy like a stormcloud waiting to break.Rayne felt it in every glance.Every whispered conversation that ended the moment she entered a room. The Trial of Shadows had changed things—and not just between her and Lucian. The academy had noticed a difference. Eyes were sharper now. Words heavier. And trust? That was long gone. She was walking back from the training yard alone, bruised and aching from another round of drills. The sun dipped behind the blackstone towers, casting the halls in gold-shadowed light. She rounded the corner near the central archway when she heard the low laugh.Xavier.He leaned against the wall like he owned the academy, arms crossed, hair tousled like he'd just come from a photoshoot instead of combat class. Kade stood beside him, tall and smirking, flipping a coin between his fingers.Rayne didn’t stop. She didn’t even look.“Where’s your guard dog, Valen?” Xavier called out, voice lazy, amused. She

The path to the administrative wing felt longer than usual.Rayne’s shirt clung to her damp skin, her heart still racing from what almost happened minutes ago—and now, from whatever this was.Lucian walked beside her in silence, his jaw tight, his fists clenched at his sides. The lamps lining the hall cast long shadows, but even the quiet didn’t settle her nerves.Calloway only summoned cadets at night for one of two reasons: disciplinary action or emergencies.Rayne had no illusions about which this was. When they entered, Instructor Calloway stood by his desk, a thick file in hand. His face was unreadable—stern, as always—but his silence set her on edge more than any yelling ever could.Lucian gave a curt nod. “Sir.”Rayne followed suit. “You wanted to see us?”Calloway’s gaze flicked between them. “Shut the door.”Lucian reached back and clicked it shut. The air in the room seemed to tighten.Calloway didn’t speak immediately. He took his time, flipping through the file with exagge

Training resumed the following week. The academy grounds looked the same.Same sharp-lined buildings carved from blackstone. Same statues of ancient Alphas towering like guardians. Same wind snapping through the banners overhead, each embroidered with the sigil of the founding packs. But for Rayne Valen, everything had changed. She stood at the edge of the training yard, back ramrod straight, trying not to flinch at every shout, every clash of metal on metal. Her body still ached—healing too slow, bones too stiff—but the pain wasn’t what made her stomach twist. It was the eyes.Lucian's gaze had become a familiar burn on her skin—dangerous, comforting, unreadable. She gripped the hilt of her training blade tighter.Just survive. Keep your head down. Be invisible again.Rayne moved through the drills like a ghost, her body obeying commands while her mind drifted—always, always—to him.He was everywhere. His scent lingered on her cloak. His voice echoed in her mind. His presence haunted
