Chapter 4

Conrad Stone

~•~

“Unfortunately, he was killed by my former Luna, Zoey Malik.”

Knowing that your mate murdered your best friend was a traumatic event. And the worst part? She was constantly denying it after being caught.

Everyone saw her clothes soaked in his blood.

I couldn’t even give her the benefit of the doubt if I wanted to. What would the other members of the pack think? That they can commit crimes and go free?

The pain of the bond severance stung but it was overshadowed by grief. I had to cut ties with Zoey before sending her into the dungeon.

I knew how I felt about Zoey the first time our wolves sensed each other. I felt I was being cursed by the moon goddess.

I mean, I always expected Wendy to be my mate. But it turned out to be a mere maid in the pack. A powerless orphan. I didn’t want to accept her at first, but my mother convinced me to do it.

As time passed, I gradually warmed up to Zoey.

I discovered that she wasn’t that bad.

Zoey just needed to clean up. She was an attractive girl but was too poor to keep up with her maintenance. But after I marked her and took her into my home, I noticed that her appearance changed and she started to look the part.

I wasn’t embarrassed to be seen with her anymore.

With time, I even stopped cheating on her with Wendy.

Just when I thought I could fall in love with her, she went ahead to commit an unforgivable crime. A part of me wishes she didn’t do it because I had developed a soft spot for her.

But I had to give her the same punishment I would give to every other person.

“She will be thrown into the dungeon to pay for her sins.” The crowd was pleased as I announced Zoey’s punishment. “We will all gather some other time to give Ethan a befitting funeral.”

I never imagined having to plan a funeral for Ethan.

It was heartbreaking to even say it out loud.

I already missed Ethan dearly. I just wanted to get the punishment over with, so I would retire back to my room and grieve properly.

When I was done addressing the crowd, I walked over to Zoey and asked. “Why did you do it?” I wanted some sort of closure.

I wanted to know her motive for killing him.

He didn’t deserve to die.

“I didn’t do it, Conrad. I’m being framed. There’s a real killer out there and you want me to pay for a crime that I didn’t commit.”

As usual, she continued to deny it.

I wasn’t surprised.

“Take her,” I whispered to the men who would be taking her to the dungeon.

But just as they were about to do it, a loud voice echoed from the crowd. “Mate!”

The crowd went silent and parted like it was the Red Sea.

I was surprised when I saw Sean.

He was a Lycan king from a neighboring pack. We met a few times but we weren’t exactly friends. But we weren’t enemies either.

He was more powerful than me and I always learned to keep my distance from Lycan kings. I knew that I wouldn’t stand a chance to win a fight against them.

It took a second before I realized that he found his mate in my pack. My eyes darted through the crowd as I anticipated to see who the person was.

Sean didn’t stop walking until he came to where I stood with Zoey and the men who were about to take her.

“Mate.” He repeated, his gaze fixed on Zoey.

It must’ve been a mistake.

Sean and Zoey couldn’t be mates.

I was her true mate.

Even if I rejected her, no one else could sense her as their mate. It was all a big misunderstanding. He must’ve gotten the wrong person.

Before anybody could say anything, I stepped in between them. “No, you’ve made a mistake. Zoey can’t be your mate.” I said, looking up at Sean.

He was a few feet taller than me.

It felt like he was hovering over me and I was a little bit intimidated, but I stayed calm. “Zoey is my mate,” I added.

Sean looked at me, his eyes raking over me from head to toe.

“Are you trying to say that the moon goddess made a mistake?” He asked, his voice hoarse. Then he turned to Zoey. “Is he your mate?”

She hesitated for a second, then she stuttered as she tried to respond. “Y…no…not…not anymore.”

Sean smiled. “She’s not your mate.” He replied as he reached out for Zoey’s trembling hand and interlaced his fingers through hers. “She’s coming with me.” He declared.

The crowd erupted with frustrated roars.

“I’m afraid that you can’t take her right now.” I continued my voice firm. “She committed a crime and she has to pay for her sins.”

Sean brushed off my concerns with a dismissive wave. “Oh, about the murder? I know that my mate isn’t capable of killing someone.” He vouched for Zoey as if he knew her. “And I’ll prove it to you by exposing the real killer.”

The crowd erupted again, this time with louder whispers.

I raised a brow at him. “How do you intend on doing that?”

Sean smiled. “Just give me a few weeks. If I don’t expose the real killer, then you can throw Zoey into the dungeon.” He replied, his voice calm.

“He can’t just walk here and do something like this,” Wendy murmured on my shoulder. “Ask him to leave.” She added, her voice thick with disdain.

Normally, I wouldn’t have agreed.

But thinking about it, Zoey wasn’t capable of killing someone. I wasn’t completely ruling her out as the murderer.

However, if there was a chance that someone else was the killer, I was interested in knowing. I knew that the pack members wouldn’t be happy, but I had to take my chances.

“Fine, you have four weeks,” I said aloud.

“I’ll only need two.” He answered with a cocky grin.

As the crowd reacted, my gaze was focused on Zoey.

If Zoey and I were true mates, then how did she form another bond?

And if she didn’t kill Ethan, who the hell did?

Chapter 10 Conrad Stone ~•~ I was lost in my thoughts throughout the entire mating ball. Wendy was enthusiastic about everything. She even spent the last few minutes dancing to the soft music that pulsed through the ballroom. I tried my best to stay focused, but my mind kept wandering over to Zoey and Sean. It had been a week since she left. For someone who didn’t really want Zoey as his mate at first, her absence affected me so much. I didn’t know if it was because she was under another man’s roof or because I felt guilty. After all, I was about to punish her for a crime that she didn’t commit. I didn’t have the confirmation yet, but I just had this feeling that she didn’t do it. It was just a week left before Sean revealed the real killer. As the days went by, my curiosity grew. I wanted to know who the real killer was. I attempted to investigate the murder on my own, but I couldn’t come up with anything. Ethan’s parents didn’t want their son to be buri

Chapter 9 Zoey Malik ~•~ As I sat down on the bed in my new room, my mind wandered back to the kiss Sean and I had just shared. I knew it was fake but it still made my heart race. His lips had been firm and warm against mine. It was too intense for something that was only meant to be an act. Why did it feel like something shifted that moment? I exhaled, letting a finger touch my lips. “It’s just a contract, Zoey. It doesn’t mean anything.” I muttered to myself. “I’m sure Sean didn’t even feel anything.” I tried to convince myself to stop being delusional about the situation. But then again, Sean didn’t have to kiss me like that. Not with that much force. He could’ve just wrapped his hands around my waist if he wanted the pack member to think that I belonged to him. But he chose to kiss me instead. A gentle knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. I stood up from the bed and answered the door. As the door swung open, I saw a pretty lady standing in front of me

Chapter 8 Zoey Malik ~•~ “What was that for?” I asked, shocked, as he pulled away. He just wanted me to be his pretend mate, I had no idea it would involve kissing him. The truth was that I still had feelings for Conrad. Even though he rejected me, it will take a while before I can heal and forget about him. I wasn’t sure I would ever forget about him. But moving on was going to be difficult. “You saw how everyone stared at you like you were a stranger, right?” He whispered in my ear, his hot breath fanning my shoulders. I nodded slowly but didn’t utter a word. “I want them to know that you’re mine, I don’t want them to see you as a stranger.” He added, pulling me closer. “We have to make them believe that we are mates. I can’t risk anyone finding out the truth.” I closed my eyes briefly, letting out a deep exhale. “Okay.” As Sean and I walked through the compound, I felt dozens of eyes on my skin, but I didn’t bother to look at them. I still felt weird.

Chapter 7 Zoey Malik ~•~ “Are you sure you’re making the right decision?” Selena asked, her eyes teary. “You barely know this man, I don’t think you should go with him.” She added, the concern in her voice unmistakable. I let out a wistful sigh. “I don’t have any other option. It’s either I leave with him or get thrown into the dungeon.” I replied, my voice trembling slightly. Selena pulled me into a warm embrace. “I don’t want you to leave with him. I’m scared.” She continued, her voice barely above a whisper. Before I could respond, Sean’s voice echoed from behind us. “Wrap it up, I don’t have all the time in the world.” He said without a care in the world. Was I making the right decision by leaving with him? If only I had a third option, I wouldn’t be going with a total stranger. “I’ll keep in touch. I’m sure I’ll be okay.” I whispered in her ear. “Call me when you get there.” I nodded, wiping off the tears that were flowing down my face. He made me

Chapter 6 Conrad Stone ~•~ “Are you out of your mind?” Wendy exclaimed. “Why did you let him take her? Do you want the other members of the pack to think that you aren’t a man of your word?” Her eyes blazed with anger. I let out a sharp exhale. “Wend…..” She cut me off before I could complete my sentence. “You’re giving her a free pass for murder.” She continued, staring at me in shock. “Now other people would think that it’s cool to commit murder because there’s a possibility of getting away with it.” I understood Wendy’s concerns but my mind was racing with different thoughts and I needed her to chill. Just as she opened her mouth to speak again, I interrupted her. “Enough!” My thunderous voice made her flinch. “Can you just stop talking for a second?” I asked, my tone softer. She shook her head. “I don’t know if you’re under a spell. But I’m not.” She said, folding her arms around her chest. “If you’re not going to do something, I’ll be the one to stop them

Chapter 5 Zoey Malik ~•~ I still had no idea who the man was, but I had no choice but to follow him. It was my only way to escape the punishment. The moon goddess finally gave me a miracle. My legs felt weak as he carried me away from the crowd. The pack members were murmuring behind us, but I didn’t look back at them. I already knew that most of them weren’t pleased that I was leaving without getting my punishment. I was even surprised that Conrad agreed to let me go. But how could I trust a stranger to expose the real killer in two weeks? The thought of being thrown into the dungeon was scary. He didn’t speak to me as we walked. He didn’t try to comfort me. He didn’t ask if I was okay. But I felt safe as he held my hands. Once we finally left the crowd, I stopped. “What?” He asked, narrowing his eyes on me. “Who sent you?” I asked, folding my arms. “Why did you call me your mate?” My mind was racing with different unanswered questions.
