Chapter 1 Escape Plan

「申し訳ございません、温井さん。手術に最適な時期は、もう過ぎてしまっておりました……」

子宮がんの診断書を握りしめたまま、温井紬（ぬくい つむぎ）はしばらく動けずにいた。どれくらい経っただろう、彼女はようやく我に返り、長谷川慎（はせがわ しん）の秘書である柏木要（かしわぎ かなめ）に電話をかける。

呼び出し音が長く鳴り続けた。やっと出た相手の声は、いつも通り素っ気ない。「奥様、何か御用でしょうか」

紬は震える指を握りしめた。「慎は？話があるの」

「長谷川代表は今、取り込み中です」要が答えた。

「少しだけでいいから、代わってもらえない……？」

要の返事を待つ間もなく、受話器の向こうから柔らかな女性の声が聞こえてきた。「慎、サプライズって一体どんな物なの？もったいぶらないで教えてよ」

「上を見て」

聞き慣れた低い声。でも、紬に向けられたことは一度もない、あたたかな響きだった。

次の瞬間、要は遠慮なく電話を切った。

そのとき――

ドォンッ!

港の対岸から轟音が響いた。紬は青ざめた顔で空を仰ぐ。

対岸から打ち上がる、華やかな花火。紺碧の夜空を彩る光の饗宴は、まるでおとぎ話のように美しかった。

病院の入口には、人だかりができていた。

「ねえ、知ってる？あれ、ランセー・ホールディングスの長谷川代表が彼女の誕生日に上げた花火なんだって。一晩で40億円以上らしいわよ！」

「お相手、園部寧音(そのべ ねね)さんでしょ！世界トップの工科大の博士で、国内の一流企業が引く手あまたのエリート。頭も良くて美人で、家柄も申し分ないし、彼氏まであんなイケメンの大金持ちなんて！」

「そりゃあの長谷川代表も夢中になるわよ。あんな完璧な彼女、自慢したくなるに決まってるじゃない！」

紬は派手に輝く花火を見上げたまま、じっと立ち尽くしていた。やがて、握りしめていた診断書がするりと指から滑り落ち、薄い紙切れが足元に舞い降りる。

彼女は踵を返し、静かに立ち去った。

その日の明け方のこと。

慎が帰宅すると、灯りもつけずに紬が暗闇のリビングに座っていた。

彼はスイッチに手を伸ばして明かりをつけ、眉をひそめる。「まだ起きてたのか」

紬は顔を上げ、目の前の人を見つめる。上腕にかける上着、深い黒の瞳。変わらず冷ややかな眼差しで、こちらを見下ろしている。

ずっと、彼はこういう人なのだと思っていた。生まれつき、誰にでも冷たいのだと。でも違った。自分の隣で氷のように冷たい彼は、別の誰かにとっては、心を焦がすほどあたたかいのだ。

「眠れなくて」紬はかすれた声で答える。「今日、病院に行ってきたの」

慎は無造作に上着をソファに投げ出すと、無関心な口調で訊く。「で、何て言われた？」

紬は最近ずっと下腹部の痛みを訴えていた。慎は一緒に病院へ行くと約束してくれたのに、その度に延期になった。

――会社で超大型契約が入っただの、プロジェクトでトラブルが起きただの。

慎は確かに昨日、紬に約束していた。病院に付き添うと。

でも寧音はこっそり自分の誕生日を祝うつもりだと聞いて、会社から慌てて寧音のところに駆けつけた。

寧音のために花火を打ち上げるのに夢中で、紬に関しては、確かに手が回らなかった。

「何でもない。もう少し様子を見ましょうって」紬は目を伏せる。「それより……今日は、どうして帰ってきたの？」

慎は一瞬動きを止めた。それから、ゆっくりと近づいてくる。

紬を抱き寄せ、首筋に何度も熱い吐息を落とす。耳元で、かすれた声が響いた。

「今日からお前の排卵日だろ」

「長谷川家の跡継ぎを産むために、毎月この時期は必ず関係を持つって約束したのはお前の方だ。まさか、もう忘れたのか？」

彼の身体から漂う女性用の香水の香り。それはまるで銃弾のように、紬が必死で保っていたわずかなプライドを撃ち抜いた。

慎の言う通りだった。結婚して三年、彼はずっとこうだった。祖母である長谷川老夫人に「長谷川家の跡を継ぐ子を」と言われたときだけ、義務のように帰ってきて、紬を抱く。

紬の意識がぼんやりと遠のく。子供……もう無理かもしれないのに。

もともと紬は、穏やかで従順な性格だった。言われるがまま、流されるまま。それが当たり前になっていた。でも今日は――もう、我慢したくなかった。

「慎、私と寝て……彼女に嫉妬されたりしないの？」

暗闇の中、紬の瞳が鋭く光る。大人しかった小動物が、初めて牙を剥くように。

慎は彼女を見つめた。いつもと違う真剣な表情に気づいたのか、彼の目に冷たい光が宿る。

やがて、慎が笑った。けれど、その笑みに温もりはない。

「まさか。俺たちの結婚は秘密だ。というか、表に出せないのはお前の方だろう」

「最初から脇役だと分かっていたはずだ」

Chapter 3 Unwanted Attention
She put her hand in her purse and finds the can of mace and keeps it in her hand until the valet arrives with her car. Her car arrives and she gets in it and heads back to the resort. Monday again and time to set up a new routine. She starts with the usual jog, shower and breakfast, then goes look for the events coordinator to check on renting the ball room to work on dance routines for the special clients. She finds the manager and makes sure the room is soundproof and has locks. “My work is very confidential. I have access to songs before they are released. Everyone was quiet on the short ride back to the resort. Once they got to their room they all went to bed. It was after 2am.
