Liam’s POV

If you think you have had a bad day, then I’ve had worse.

First, I was left at the altar by the woman I was supposed to marry because of the ring bearer.

Second, I got a child.

My ring bearer.

Let’s roll the tape back.

“What? You’re surprised?” Lola stepped closer and whispered so that only I could hear her. She looked at me like I had fallen directly into her trap.

And yes, I did. I fell directly into her trap.

The ring bearer was the child of the woman I had a one-night stand with a few years back when I was reckless and made a drunken mistake while Lola and I were still dating.

Ever since my drunken mistake, I’ve been paying for child support behind Lola’s back but I guess it wasn’t really behind her back.

I looked into the congregation to find the mother of the child who was still walking down the aisle, as if on a mission. She was nowhere to be seen.

The guests were too mesmerized by my ring bearer to even notice what was going on on the altar.

“Lola, what’s going on? I don’t understand.”

“Of course, you don’t. When have you ever understood anything other than sticking your penis into holes?”

And right there, by the altar, she took both rings from Kaleb and dumped them on my hand. The ring box had a paper under but that wasn’t my priority now.

“Have a wonderful day with your family instead.” She said and took off.

It was then that the guests noticed what was going on.

“Lola, wait. Let’s talk this out.” I ran after her.

“You had three years to talk.” She raised three fingers. “Three good years to talk. Instead, you felt paying money would shut everybody up.”

“Lola please.”

“Maybe karma is actually real. This was the same way I begged the universe to let the information I had gotten be false but here we are.” She said and entered the closest taxi and like that, she was gone.

After searching everywhere I could, I finally decided to open the letter that was under the ring box that I slipped into my pocket.

“Liam, Kaleb is your son as much as he is mine. But without court cases, I am handing over my rights to this child to you. Take care of him like you’ll take care of yourself.

Linda.”

I slammed my hand into the nearest wall. I searched for my phone and dialed Linda’s number. Voicemail.

“Fuck!.” I roared.

I drove back to the church where Kaleb was. He sat down by the steps of the church just staring at his shoes. I couldn’t bring myself to let my anger for his mother affect him. He is my son too after all.

“Kaleb,” I announced my presence as I approached him.

“Daddy!” He said as he bounced on his feet to hug my leg.

I ruffled his hair before crouching down to his level.

“Where is mummy?” He beat me to my question. “She said she was going to come pick me up when you finished. Who was that woman? She looked mean.” He said everything on his mind.

“I have no idea where mummy is,” I said as calmly as possible despite my anger towards the woman in question. “So, that means you’ll be staying with me until mummy comes back. Is that good?” I asked.

“I guess. Will she come back soon?”

“I have no idea, son. I really have no idea.”

“Who was that woman? The mean one with you.”

I don’t know how much Linda has taught him already. I didn’t want to say things that would make him hate me provided that we are going to be seeing each other more often now.

“I’ll explain to you later. Let’s go home.” I said and carried him on my waist as best as I could.

“I can walk, Dad.” He laughed.

“I know. Enjoy the little things.”

Chapter NineStella’s POVAfter three more back-to-back meetings, I was done for the day. I was about to pack my things when my phone pinged with an email. You’re not to leave the office before your boss. Simple. That was all that the mail entailed. I suspected something was up when I didn’t get a rule last night or early this morning because Mr. Blackwell doesn’t strike me as someone who forgets things easily. I walked out of my office to use the main door to Mr. Blackwell’s office. After knocking thrice, I heard a rough ‘come in.’Immediately, I swung the door open. “Ah, I see that you have received your new rule for today. Is there a problem?”“Not at all, sir.” I simply replied. The fight in me subsequently died down because what was I supposed to say? That I had plans with my friend, my sister, and her boyfriend actually and that was why I wanted to leave early?“If I may ask, is there a reason for the sudden rule?” I asked instead. “Yes. You heard what the tech department

Dual POV Stella’s POV The tension in the room couldn’t have been broken with a sledgehammer. After Mr Blackwell’s delivery of judgment, everybody in the room became more focused on the task at hand so that they wouldn’t be the next target. “That’s the end of the presentation.” The woman presenting, Jamie, said wrapping up her presentation on budget restructure. “Alright. Does anyone have any contributions?” I asked, looking around the room. “Ms. Kingsley, question for you.” Mr Blackwell said, looking directly at me. I swallowed under the intensity of his stare. “Yes, sir?” “Based on the numbers presented, what would you adjust first?” Everybody in the room turned to me, holding their breath on my behalf. They were waiting to see whether I would survive this. I inhaled slowly, glancing at the projection screen. “The marketing allocation,” I said carefully. “We’re investing heavily in visibility but not enough in

  • Altar Vows   Chapter Seven

Liam’s POV I don’t think I was ever as scared as when I found out that Kaleb was not in my office. My thoughts ran a million miles. “You scared the shit out of me today.” I said to Kaleb as we entered into the house. “Bad word. He exclaimed. “I’m sorry.” He replied, looking sincerely apologetic. “That’s fine.” I said as I made my way to the kitchen to microwave the dinner the cook, Sarah, must have made. “Daddy, can we bring Ms. Stella in our trip to the zoo?” Kaleb asked. I stopped suddenly that he bumped into me. I quickly caught him before he hit the floor. “Is there a reason why?” I asked. “I like her. She is nice and she has the same name as my best friend in the other school.” “Kaleb, that’s not enough reason to invite someone out with you. You have to know the person and truly trust them.”“Ms. Stella doesn’t look like she can kill a cockroach. I think she is fine.” He replied adamantly. I sighed before replying. “No problem. I’ll see what I can do. It is not a promis

  • Altar Vows   Chapter Six

Stella’s POV I crashed into my apartment by 7 pm after the very strenuous day. Or maybe it is because of my long time of unemployment that made today longer than usual. As I sat on my sofa, undressing, an email came in. Rule for Day Two. A cup of coffee and my full schedule on my table tomorrow before I arrive. That was it. No greeting, no signature, nothing. But I knew who it was from. Suddenly I wished I were unemployed again but as fast as the thought came, I dismissed it. If I will get to work earlier than Mr Blackwell tomorrow, then I need a proper rest. I didn’t bother making dinner. It was not as if I had anything anyway. I just took a very relaxing shower and called it a day. By 6 am, my alarm rang through the apartment. I was about to hit the snooze button when I realized what was going on. I’m employed. And my very grumpy boss needs his coffee and his schedule. I quickly stood up, went through my morning routine properly provided that I wasn’t
