ALEX

The air smells of sweat and iron.

Swords clash in the distance, wood cracks against wood, and the ground shakes with every thud of impact.

It’s early, but the courtyard behind the main hall is already alive with noise.

Warriors sparring, betas barking orders, the occasional grunt of pain breaking through the morning chill.

I hover at the edge, arms crossed, trying not to look like I don’t belong.

Which is stupid, because I don’t.

The Lycan King’s pack is a machine.

Disciplined, ruthless,

MASON For some reason, I'd thought only the Alphas of Namora would be attending this meeting. Annual meetups like this usually take place in the study room, and for a pack as big as the Blue Roses, I was already prepared to bathe in the luxury and splendor of Felix's perfectly designed manor. The last thing I expected, was to see so many people gathered at his combat ground. “Is this some wedding after-party?” Aurora murmurs as I find a space to park. “I doubt it. Those guys aren't Blue Roses” I say underneath my breath, recognizing the toxic scent of members of the Thunder Pack.Five packs in total make up the Namora Clan. The Blue Roses, the largest in size and combat strength, have been at the top of the feeding chain for almost a decade now. The IronClaws are close seconds, only because my father decided to retire his claws and water down his old days of combat without choosing a new leader to take the helms. At full strength, I doubt they stand a chance against us.“Isn't that

AURORAI lift my gaze from the document in front of me and our eyes meet for what should've been a fleeting second. But he doesn't look away. His arms are crossed in front of him as he leans back against his bedroom door with a concerned look stretched across his face.“What?” I smile to myself. “Are you that surprised that I signed without going through it?”“Not necessarily. I've already signed it myself, have I not?” he leans off. “I’m more concerned about the sudden change of heart. Why?” He tilts his head. An uncomfortable bout of silence lingers between us before I decide to let the cat out the bag.“Ever heard of what happens the night after a wedding, Alpha Mason?” I rise from the chair beside his study table. “Huh?”“The honeymoon night. The most intimate period of time between a husband and his wife” I take a step in his direction. “They culminate their love with scenes of frantic romance and energetic lust, feeding on each other's bodies like they'd waited their entire

MASON“Mason, the meeting at Blue Rose grounds is in a couple minutes. You're not still in your robe, are you?” I hear from across the hallway. Dear God. Can't Benny be late for once in his life? I haven't even gotten a wink of sleep.“Can’t you go in my place? I'm tired.”“Funny joke. Get off your ass young man” he tugs open the door and sees me staring at the roof of my room. “You wouldn't be so tired, if you didn't creep back home by five in the morning.”“Of course you knew.”“Next time try tiptoeing, and not stumbling into every chair downstairs?” He folds his arms in front of his chest. “Go take a shower and get dressed for the Blue Roses. I don't want to have to come up here again.”Tsk.“Oh, and by the way, your brother—”“I don't want to hear about it” I murmur before he can spoil my already tainted mood.“I thought you'd—”“I don't want to hear about it Benny.”“Well I do” the familiar voice slithers into my room, and I sigh in defeat. “Fucking kill me already.”“Good Morn

CURRENT TIMEAURORASo he wasn't bluffing when he said he knew a place. A property on another Pack's grounds at that. How is that even possible?“Make yourself at home. If the alcohol comes back up, try not to puke on the tiles” He tosses the keys onto the granite countertop, and the metallic jingle echoes through the cavernous space. The high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sleek, modern furnishings all blend together to create an atmosphere of understated luxury. Imposing yet oddly intricate. Almost like… well, Him!His footsteps tattle against the polished marble floor as he makes his way to kitchen. “I know it's late, but would you like a beer? I'm pretty sure that drunk stashed some somewhere in this place the last time he was here. Alcohol doesn't expire, does it?” His voice fades into the background as he rummages through the kitchen.I know I'm way passed overanalyzing all this, but this man is so… I don't even know what to call it.First, he hands me pretty much the

6 MONTHS AGOAURORAMy bedroom door slowly creaks open, and the shoes gently pat against the wooden floor. The unhurried steps gracefully court my attention, and that scent is too familiar to mistake. If only they all belonged to the person I’ve been waiting for this entire time. It's six in the evening, and he's still not here. “Aurora?”“He's not coming, is he?” I don't even bother to raise my head. My makeup’s smothered across my face, and my mascara over my gown. I've cried so much, I don't think I have any more tears left in me.“We haven't seen him yet. The boys joined hands with the Alphas. The pub, community center, love garden—”“Don't. Don't give me hope" my head falls to my hands. "Why didn't he just say it from the beginning? He'd just throw three years of our lives down the drain like this? Why? Why would he do this to me?" I genuinely rack my brain for answers, but end up breaking in an instant.“What did I do?”The fatigue from standing at the altar from almost four

AURORA“That's the little bitch from earlier. I wish the Alpha would've allowed me take care of her myself.” Neither the loud music, nor the constant slamming of glass shots around the bar manage to dowse his comment. I heard him loud and clear. I'm guessing that was the point of making it so audible anyway.“Hey, are you sure it's safe for you to still be here?” a softer voice hums in concern. The old bartender's had the same uncomfortable look about him since the moment they tossed me in here. “If I could spare you the trouble, I would” I massage my head in weariness. “But it's two in the morning and my flight isn't until six hours from now. Would it be safer for me to walk out of here, or take my chances in your gradually thinning-out bar?”“You're not listening to me” he doubles down. “It's not safe for you to be here, WITH THEM. I’m an old man, far passed his glory days. I don't think I'd be able to protect you if they decided to… you know?”“Well I'm not leaving anytime soon.
