I make my way through the dark museum halls with hanging skeletons and plastic corpses. Only the sound of the wind is noticeable. I walk through the place silently. No sound comes from my feet, and my breath is quieter than the sound of the hands on a watch. The World Artifact exhibit is two halls over and on the other side of where I started. There shouldn't be any form of security that I can't handle. But walking through the museum, there's not a great deal of security. No lasers, or tripwires, or any dogs either. Not even cameras. Which is good, but gets me thinking as I sneak around. There seems to have been an exorbitant amount of money put into building it, but not sustaining it. Evidence of faded power.I quickly get to the hall with where I think the ring is. There's not a lot of security, but I can guess with some certainty that there's going to be some kind of protection here, despite there being none everywhere else. It's a ring. It's valuable. It's protected.Aiming my fla
The wound I dealt with somehow. There was a lot of blood, but I managed to stitch it up, and then put some bandages over it. Cleaning the wound hurt the most, but iodine doesn't care. It's just there to kill cells. The other four I managed to text yesterday, Sunday. I got home after an hour. I had to switch between jogging and walking because I was so much in pain. The morphine had begun to wear off when I entered my neighborhood, so I had to take another shot in the bushes of a public library. But what scared me the most was the fact that I spilled some blood on my way home. If anybody got ahold of that there could be some major tracking. But luckily it rained yesterday. I can only hope nobody found it. Sitting in Pike's car as we drive to school, Ves and Mia keep trying to pry open my shirt and see the wound. Mia is an expert field medic, but Ves isn't, so I don't feel inclined in showing her my wound. "Oh my god," says Mia quietly as she pulls my bandage away to reveal t
"Regardless of the type of gun used, there is always one fact that remains true. Bullets hurt. And when they enter your body, they damage you. "But the loss of blood that comes after is much more dangerous compared to the bullets. Bullets only hurt when they move through you. Once they stop, only pain lingers. There's not a lot of damage from a stationary bullet in the body "The loss of blood makes it so that the body cannot function at its peak, not to mention how your body will feel heavier and heavier. Take note not to get hit." The speech I received on the first day when I trained to handle a firearm plays around in my head. It sounds like a radio or one of the voices on those black and white shows where the voice's lower pitch is amplified. I slowly drift into my body. It seems to take hours for me to regain any feeling of my hands or my toes. But as if I'm rising out of the water into the air, I slowly surface into my body. Slowly, though. And as I surface my head begi
Dane...loves me? But...how?"What do you mean you love me?" I ask as I look up at him."I yearn to have you with me for the rest of my life," replies Dane."What even is love?""That's a really hard question.""Why?""Well," says Dane as he thinks of an answer, "it's one of the questions that humans have tried to answer for a long time.""What's your answer?""I think love is the longing of the soul for another soul," he replies."Soul?" I ask."The spirit of life we all hold."I think for a second. Sounds complex. But whatever. I need to get back on track on what he said before this humanity exploration."So, you love me?" I ask."Ever since the day I saw you," says Dane.I look into his eyes that swirl and swirl around in some deep emotion. It seems to draw me into it."How do I respond?" I say quietly.I really don't know what there is to say. I never had somebody look out for and genuinely treasure me. No clue as to do from here now that I know that Dane loves me."How do you feel
Waking up in the middle of the night, I turn to the side and see that Rupert is still there. He snores lightly. It's not too loud, but the noise is there. I rub my hand gently on his head so as not to wake him. He huffs in his sleep.Looking to the other side where the nightstand is, I look at the clock. 4:34 A.M. Right around that weird time that you could wake up but you could also just go back to sleep. At least for me.I close my eyes to try and sleep, but it evades me. I lay like that for about twenty minutes. Still, I'm awake.Opening my eyes, I think of what to do. Maybe I'll explore Dane's house and find the kitchen. I could use a drink of water anyway.Scooting to the side, I make space between Rupert and then sit up. He stirs but doesn't exit his dream world. I reach over him and grab the pole the IV hangs from. Maneuvering it over him, I set it down on the other side of the bed.I sit on the edge of the bed and wait for the momentary headache to fade. After it does, I stand
"How long did your doctor say it would take for me to heal?" I ask as I finish up the last of my toast."He said about a week at least. Best if you stay two weeks off your feet," says Dane."Two weeks? What am I supposed to do until then?" I ask as I take a big sigh."You could stay here. Dad is out for business for the next two and a half weeks, so he's not going to mind. And even if he comes home, he'll most likely make you stay longer, seeing as how he's crazy about meeting you.""And what about schoolwork?""I'll just bring it to you. School starts tomorrow, so I can swing by all your classes. And you can text Pike and the others to get your work as well," says Dane."I can tell by how this conversation is going that you want me to stay here, don't you?" I say."Pretty much.""Okay. Are you doing dishes?" I ask."I'll never turn down help," says Dane with a smile."Okay," I reply.I grab my dish and walk over to the sink. The IV ran out halfway through my meal, and I just pulled o
The front door opens and I hear feet shuffle in. Pausing my rubbing of Rupert's head, I peek over the edge of the couch and look down into the hallway. I see Dane pulling off his sneakers."Hey," he says with a grin as he straightens up his posture."Hi," I reply as I hop off the couch with Rupert and walk over to Dane, "how was your day?" I ask."Pretty much the same. P.E. was a bit of a pain, but it's getting cooler so I don't have to worry about the heat," he replies. He pulls the collar of his white T-shirt and lets some heat escape. I see a little sweat stain on the front, right in the middle of his chest."Your shirt says otherwise," I remark as I point it out. Dane glances down."Well, I was a bit in a rush to get to your classes to pick up your work," says Dane."Well, thank you for that," I reply with a smile. Dane smiles and leans down for a kiss. I lean forward and connect my lips to his. It's a light peck, but I enjoy it."What do you have planned for dinner?" asks Dane as
"Avezedo is probably going to trash-talk me since I've missed so much of his class," I say as I wash the dishes. Breakfast was some scrambled eggs with cheese and sausages. Along with buttered toast and some jam."You'll just have to deal with it," says Dane as he dries the plates I hand him."I'd rather not," I remark. But I smile at Dane. He leans in for a quick peck and lays his hand on my ribcage. That spot seems to be somewhere we both like him to have his hand on. I like it because it makes me feel so safe, and Dane apparently likes it for some reason he hasn't told me. I'll ask him later."Well, we better get going," says Dane as he pulls away from the kiss."Okay," I say with a sigh. I walk out the kitchen with him and to the foyer where I left my stuff. My backpack as well as his sit crumpled on the ground slightly. I reach down and grab both. Turning to Dane, I hand him his."Thanks," he says. We walk out and head over to the car. The early October day is cool, and just a hi
