Four: The Honeymoon Is Over

The past five months were like a honeymoon for them. Though they lived every day looking over their shoulders, they did it together, holding hands, in love. Running from their past to be with each other was like living in a fairy tale. Maybe that was all it was, a fairy tale.

“Do you think you would live happily ever after with Armand Lombardo’s wife?”

Tony was not wrong to ask that question. For a brief moment, Diego believed he could do that. But he was fooling himself. No matter how in love they were, it was always bubbling under the surface. She was still married to her husband, legally and mentally. He could never get rid of Armand’s shadow, whether he was dead or alive.

She would’ve been devastated to have to live with the notion that she had ended Armand’s life, but she could never fully live knowing that he was still alive, either. And that was how it was for the past five months. She put on a smile; she laughed, she cuddled, she made love to him, and all the while, she tucked her memories of Armand in the nooks and crannies of her thoughts. And those thoughts would creep up at times when she was alone. She would never know how much it pains Diego to be aware of that.

When he made love to her, she was all his. Her mind, her body, even her soul. He could feel all of her with him. She loved him. That much he was sure of. Which made him crazy over her every day they were together. But he could not deny that nagging feeling that she still had some love for him too ... that psycho son of a bitch he had grown to hate more and more each day just because he couldn’t erase him from her mind.

Now they were back to this. From the moment he met her, he could see how she struggled with her desire to return to him. It was always there.

“Why do you think she agreed to go back in there at the first chance she got?”

Diego knew the answer. He didn’t want to admit it to himself. He traced his finger over her shape in the monitor. What he’d give to touch her skin now that he knew it would never happen again. Not for a long while, at least.

The mission would take months, even years, to complete. What had they gotten themselves into? Even if he had the chance to persuade her to change her mind, he doubted that she would. She had chosen this path for herself, going back to where it started, and he had no choice but to follow her.

“Our contacts will make sure that it is safe for her to return before we send her back ... don’t worry, she’s in good hands,” Tony assured him.

“As for Pasquale LaPenna, he’s the family lawyer and most trusted person in both Lombardo and Montenero families ... he’s acting as the underboss right now since Armand fell into a coma,” Tony added.

“He’s the one who ordered me killed when he picked up Ariana in Goldstone,” Diego remembered perfectly.

“Yes, but he never saw your face; no one can verify who you are. We made sure of that ... Pasquale is fierce and loyal to the family and a very efficient man, too ... no wonder he’s the most trusted man in both families. But he can’t do it alone. He approached Armand’s uncle and cousin to join the team, and ... he never made the effort to look for Ariana since the coma.”

“He’s replacing Armand?” Diego asked.

Tony lifted his shoulders and sighed, “He can’t do that unless Armand is unable to perform his duties, but we have new information; Armand had been asking for his wife.”

Diego’s expression changed. He clenched his jaw.

“It won’t be long until he sends a search party to find her, but we can’t be sure for what reason ... I believe he will only do what’s best for the family. It’s just that we can’t tell what that is because they are having a major shift right now. Everybody is assessing everybody else to see what works.”

“So she will have opposition from inside the family?” Diego thought.

Tony shrugged, “From everywhere ... the other families, major ones and minor ones, they are scrambling to look for allies. They can feel that war is coming ... and to be under her husband’s protection is actually the safest place she could be for the time being.”

The words stabbed him like a knife. To think Ariana would be safer with the man he hated the most. That is garbage he refuses to believe; she’s safe with him.

“When are you going to send her in there?”

“She’s being prepped. We need to get the story straight about where she’s been these last five months, why she never contacted them, and why she’s back ... maybe in two weeks ... she’s a quick learner.” Tony smiled and put his hand on his shoulder.

He couldn’t understand it. How could she have decided so quickly to go back in there? He had to see her, they had to talk this through, and he had to try to make her change her mind.

“As for you ...” Tony let out a long sigh. “She’s going back there to be his wife,” he said, looking at Diego straight in the eyes.

Diego fidgeted. The image of that alone burns him.

“We will never let you go in there unless you can handle that, or you will jeopardize the whole mission ... you need to separate your emotions from this job. I know you’ve been doing that for years, and this should be no different.”

He sat back on his chair and ran his hands through his hair. Of course, this is different. He had been dead for so long until he met her, and now he had to go back to being dead inside. How could she have played him like that? How could she do this to him?

“You’ll also need prep ... you need to know who these people are, what they do, how they do it ... their code of honor, everything ... and we need to secure a place for you from the inside before we send you there ... you'd better learn fast, or it may take a while.”

All this talk swirled round and round in his head, but he held on to one primary goal at the end of the tunnel. After all the shenanigans, he will be the one to put a bullet in Armand Lombardo’s head. That was all he was willing to think about.

Diego was practicing his new routine at the headquarters: target practice. Different types of guns were lined up next to him as he emptied the ammunition one weapon at a time. His eyes were focused on the target at a 200-meter range. He didn’t miss a single shot.Tony came by to update him on the mission—a mission to which he had succumbed and committed himself.“Ariana had been reunited with her husband,” Tony began.Diego refilled his ammo in silence and started shooting again. It had been over a week since she had been flown to Lancaster, and this was the first he had heard of any news about her.“It was a successful transition ... she didn’t get any challenge from the family ... yet.”Diego put down his gun and moved to the gun next to it.“They’re going to have an internal meeting within the Lombardo-Montenero family; somebody killed Carlos Messina ... nobody knows who did it yet ... our best guest is one of the other families; they want to start a war.”Sometimes, Tony gives out

“New reports are coming in on the development of the Lombardo-Montenero case.Carlos Messina was found dead this morning during house arrest, awaiting trial for the Lombardo-Montenero wedding massacre in June last year. The 68-year-old tycoon was accused of orchestrating the attack on his business rival's family. Incriminating evidence was found at the crime scene, and a series of threats against Cossimo Lombardo was recorded, which pointed to the Messinas dynasty as the culprit of the threats. However, Carlos Messina denied any allegations against him and his family and filed a countersuit against Armand Lombardo for defamation and false accusations. The case had been halted since Armand Lombardo fell into a coma six months ago, and the case is now being postponed again after the death of the sole suspect in the attack. Police are investigating the cause of the death of Carlos Messina. We will have more on this later. Stay tuned.”Pasquale stood by the bedroom window, looking out to

They flew Ariana back to Lancaster and placed her in the heart of the city. They left breadcrumbs everywhere for Pasquale’s men to find her and made it look as if their effort had paid off, as if they had finally found the missing Princess. She was picked up from a convenience store where she was buying her everyday stuff. They ushered her into the family limo without resistance, and she met Pasquale inside the car, just like old times.“Hello, Ariana ... it’s good to see you again,” Pasquale greeted her with a suspicious smile. She couldn’t say the same thing to him, so she kept silent.“I’m surprised to find you here in Lancaster ... I thought you’d be in Guatemala or Guyana somewhere,” he said calmly. She took off her hoodie and was dressed casually, the way she had been for the past six months. “I came back here when I heard the news.”He raised his brows. “Really? So you were thinking about coming back?”She swallowed hard. “I wanted to see how he’s doing,” she said, clearing her

Something changed inside him after that meeting. He turned inward and kept to himself—silent, lost in his thoughts, alone with his demons.Everybody lied to him.The government lied to him when they killed his parents and took away his youth from under him. Tony lied when he told him the mission was for his benefit. Ariana lied when she threw her arms around his neck and told him she wanted to run away with him. She lied when she said she didn’t want to go back to Armand. That meant she lied when she told him she loved him.Their lies have brought him to that place. He was neither here nor there. He has no past to return to or future to look forward to.Tony entered his cell with a stack of documents in his hands. He placed them on the table and took one folder to open.“These are the men you have managed to put to death these past 10 years,” Tony said, then read their names, ages, occupations, and the places where they were assassinated. It was Diego’s lifelong work.“I kept track of

He didn’t just ask for the monitor to be placed in his cell so he could look at Ariana. He wanted it there so he could study where she was kept. He had managed to release himself from his shackles and figure out how to get out of his cell, and after a few days of observing the live feed, he knew exactly where she was. When the lights went out at 8 PM, he put his plan in motion. He sneaked out of his cell and passed the guards undetected. He had his sniper’s footsteps and hiding ability. He made his way to the fourth floor of the building, where Ariana was held in one of the rooms. The holding facility had a similar routine to that of a prison. The room was dark; she was already in bed. He picked the lock on the door and went inside. He could see her silhouette covered in a blanket. It was the room he had been watching 24 hours a day for the past 10 days.He put his hand on her mouth. Her eyes bulged in terror. He put his index finger to his lips. When she recognized him, she calmed do

When Armand was taken to the hospital for what seemed to be a fatal drug overdose, he thought it was the end of him. His brain had not fully recovered from the previous overdose he had suffered only days earlier, and the fact that he had stopped breathing for some time was something very few people, if any, would survive. They pumped his stomach, put him on a ventilator, heart monitor, and every medical support tool they could provide to Armand Lombardo that night, and he miraculously defied the odds and started breathing again.Pasquale was the first person on site after the Chef answered his phone and called emergency. The boy was limp on his bed with white foam coming out of his mouth. His eyes flipped, and he could only see the white parts from his parted eyelids. He wasn’t breathing, and he looked very much dead. The first and last thing on his mind was, where is Ariana? The Chef said she was nowhere to be found. She was calling them for dinner and got no answer. Once she decided
