GRACE'S POV

I was determined to prove that I was really under anesthesia and I was only imagining things, so I immediately packed the bag I recognised as an old bag of mine and left my work station.

I was waiting for the elevator when someone came and stood beside me. I didn't bother turning to look since I was only being delusional.

“Grace? Are you going home?” A male voice asked.

I immediately turned to look at the person and I had to hold in my gasp, because standing beside me was Ethan Adams. Yes, the same Ethan who died in my timeline.

I stared longer than necessary because he said, “Is there something on my face, Grace?”

I tried to speak, but stuttered, because how do you act when someone who'd died suddenly shows up in your delusional world? He looked like he did in the year 2013, younger. I must've looked like I had seen a ghost, but wasn't he one?

“No, sorry. I was just thinking about something. What did you say?” I managed to squeak out.

“I asked if you were going home, you have your bag with you.” He pointed at the bag hanging on my shoulder.

I'd have given him a stupid excuse, just so I could leave, seeing as he wasn't real, but if I was being honest, a part of me knew I couldn't be more wrong. Still, I chose to believe what I wanted.

“Yes, I have to leave. My neighbour just called me, my… cat escaped from the building and hasn't come back yet. And I have this…thing with an important person. Yes, that's why I'm leaving so early.” I gave him a weary smile.

In 2013, Ethan wasn't the manager yet, but he was definitely on his way there. I had joined the company as an intern while I was in university. I loved it so much I decided to work there after I graduated.

He smiled back. “Oh, no problem. I hope you find your cat. Elevator?”

Only then did I realise that the elevator had come and was almost shutting. Without thinking twice, I followed Ethan into the elevator.

In movies, elevators have earned a reputation for being a center for a good horror scene. Which is why when the doors shut and Ethan pressed the ground floor button, I froze and started panicking internally. What if this turned into some sick nightmares where Ethan turned to something without a name and killed me? I should've thought about that before hopping into the elevator.

However, it was my dream, so I could do whatever I wanted. I took a deep breath and decided to play cool.

“So, where are you going?” I asked Ethan.

He looked at me and replied, “I just want to grab something to eat from a place a few streets away. I didn't go out for lunch and I don't plan on leaving here early.” He shrugged softly.

“Why would you not leave here early?” I questioned him.

“I have a couple of projects to run through and I don't have anything to do at home. So, why not just be productive, you know?”

I nodded my head in understanding.

The elevator doors slid open and I stepped out, Ethan behind me.

“So…your cat stays at home alone?” He asked as we stepped outside of the building.

I winced slightly. “Yes…she's an independent cat.” My tendency to lie was hiked at this point. But he really didn't need to know about business in the real world.

I imagined that when I woke up and got healed, I'd pack up and leave. And if this wasn't some delusion, I'd better start figuring how to not die. But first, I would sleep, whatever happened after I woke up, that I would take.

“What's her name? Your cat?”

Why was he really pressing for information? He should've just said okay and be gone.

“Her name's…Bet. Yeah, Bet, my lovely independent girl.” The name slipped out of my mouth before I could stop it. In reality, Bet was the name of a fish I had when I was little. Don't ask how the name originated.

When we got to his car, he insisted I went with him.

“That's not necessary, I can take the bus.” I refused. In 2013, I hadn't gotten a car yet because I was still busy trying to live life.

“Oh, come on. Free transportation? You're going to turn that down to get on the bus with different people?” He raised an eyebrow at me, a smile splitting his lips.

I thought about it. Then, I chose free transportation, because…well, it was free.

“Fine. Free transportation.” I replied.

He jogged over to the other side of the car and opened the passenger door for me. “Ladies first.”

I giggled, shaking my head, before getting into the car.

In that moment, I felt very light, as if nothing I'd been through actually happened. I couldn't stop myself from feeling like I really did 10 years before.

Ethan got into the driver's seat and turned on the ignition.

I looked at him, head tilted. “Aren't you going to ask for my address?”

He gave me a look of confusion. “I've dropped you off before now, Grace? Did your cat give you amnesia?”

Oh, yeah. He did give me rides then. The hope that this was just a delusion was slipping away. If it really was, it was detailed to the dot. But I was beginning to doubt.

I whispered a sorry, a weary smile on my face before, I turned to look out the window, watching as the building we just left shrunk the further we went.

When we got to the building I recognised to house my apartment, I thanked Ethan. He smiled in acceptance.

“Oh, and next time, lie better.” He said just as I stepped out of the car.

“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.

“Just…lie better.”

I tilted my head to the side. “How do you know I lied?”

He chuckled before replying. “You've told me about your allergies before, Grace.”

I smiled sheepishly and rolled my eyes, because I was allergic to cats.

GRACE'S POV I was forced to believe that I was going to have to pull out my skills to send a complaint to the management. They had two choices, to move the men's bathroom, or to move the men's bathroom. There was no other option to solve the problem. Because why would I have to deal with the sight of Brett from finance always half way through pulling his pants up? He never did it in the bathroom. The last time someone asked him, he said he was late for a meeting. Well, that must be one regular meeting because I could probably sketch his manhood at that point. And every time, he'd look absolutely ashamed and embarrassed, like he didn't realise he did something uncomfortable. “Oh…uh…” He started to say. He was almost bent over, with his hands on his belt. “Don't bother.” I said, waving him off, before entering the ladies' bathroom, tired of the performance.I walked to the mirror and stared at my reflection. It was like I was in another person's body, except it was definitely mine

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 13

GRACE’S POVNo. No, no, no. Absolutely not. I did not want to see Michael, not even if we had never met in this timeline. My breath hitched, sharp and painful, like my lungs had suddenly forgotten how to work. Michael stood across the road, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other holding his phone loosely. He looked…normal. Calm. Unbothered. Like a man waiting for someone or something, not like someone who had once murdered his wife, nor will ever. My stomach twisted violently. I forgot about where I stood, memories of my previous timeline flashing through my mind in reminder. I remembered catching him, Susan in his arms on our matrimonial bed. The look on his face that said he was glad I'd found out about them. The annoyance on his face when I confronted him and even when I told him about my cancer. The fact that he believed I was just seeking attention with my illness baffled me and hurt me too. The pain of my head colliding with the edge of the table came back in a split se

GRACE'S POV A few minutes into the drive to work, Ethan pulled over in front of a breakfast shop. “What's going on?” I asked, confused. He smiled. “Sorry, I just want to quickly grab a coffee and something small to eat. I haven't had breakfast.” I nodded slowly. “Oh.” “Don't worry, you won't be late. I already asked my cousin who works here to keep them for me. I just have to pay and grab.” He added, and slid out of the car, slamming the door shut and walking into the building. I sighed and pulled out my phone. I wanted to check on Susan, and find out if she had gone to work yet. Knowing her, the possibility was lesser as she still had to pick out her outfit for the day. Susan prided in her outfits and would take ages if it meant she looked her absolute best. Was that it? That she dressed way better than I did? Is that how Michael got attracted to her and looked at me less? How would I even know anyway?I tapped on her contact and typed out a text to her. “Hey! Are you at work

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 11

GRACE'S POV The smoke in the room wasn't coming from the room, it was coming from somewhere else in the house. With my brain still foggy, I hopped out of bed, coughing violently. I immediately rushed out of the room and went straight to the kitchen. Susan was in the middle of using a kitchen towel to blow the smoke out. Meanwhile, the source of the smoke, a charred something, sat still in the frying pan on a not turned off stove.I would've slapped my face in desperation if I wasn't on the edge of choking. I went straight to the stove, turned it off, and then put the charred whatever in the bin. Susan turned to me, a guilty smile plastered across her face. “Hey, sleepyhead.” She coughed.I wasn't smiling. I was annoyed with her. “What is this, Grace? Are you trying to kill me by suffocation?” I snapped, pushing past her to open the window wider. “Asphyxia. That's the medical term that covers the entire…concept of suffocation. Just so you know, you know. But it's not like I was tr

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 10

GRACE'S POV I sat, caressing Susan's back, as she quietly sobbed on my shoulders. Apparently, she was done sobbing, because Susan reached for her ice cream again, scooping out a large bite like nothing had just happened. This was so like her. “You know what?” she said after a moment, her voice lighter now. “His loss.” She was eating more ice cream like it was real food. “That’s what I said, hunny” I replied, shaking my head softly. “No, like seriously,” she continued, sitting up straighter. “Do you know how fun I am? He’s going to regret this. He’ll be somewhere eating plain rice and thinking about me. I can bet you that. ”I blinked. “Plain rice?”“Yes. Utterly sad, disgustingly dry, and unseasoned, plain rice,” she said firmly, a grin appearing on her face. I couldn’t help it, I laughed. How could I not? This was my best friend in this timeline. But for a brief moment, everything felt normal again, like nothing had happened. Later that night, after Susan had fallen asleep on

  • Ashes to Dawn    Chapter 9

GRACE’S POVJust as I finished sticking the note to the wall, I heard knocks. Three short raps, the way Susan always knocked. An involuntary smile appeared on my face at the familiarity. Susan’s familiar voice drifted through the door. “Grace! Open up before the ice cream melts and I blame you for my heartbreak.”I shook my head before leaving the room, and walking straight to the door. For a brief second, everything inside me revolted. My chest tightened, my stomach twisted, and that same memory, the one I wished I could tear out of my mind, flashed through my eyes. I clenched my jaw, my hands forming fists. But it hadn't happened yet, so I couldn't really be angry. Taking a steady breath, I forced my expression into something normal, something that belonged to the version of me who hadn’t been destroyed by the people she trusted the most. Then I opened the door to Susan standing there, exactly as I remembered from this time, bright-eyed, lively, her hair tied into a messy bun th
