Milene's POV

I didn't tell Angelo everything Angeline said. Not right away.

I told him the parts that mattered for the war, that she hadn't sent anyone after Mia, that her father was using her humiliation as leverage he never actually cared about beyond the terms he could squeeze out of it. Angelo listened with his jaw tight the whole drive home, and when I finished, he was quiet long enough that I thought he might not respond at all.

"You believe her," he said finally. N

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 31

Milene's POVThe car smelled like gasoline and something sharper underneath it, fear maybe, mine or Roberto's, I couldn't tell anymore. I pressed myself against the door, as far from him as the small backseat allowed, my wrist throbbing where his fingers had dug in."You didn't have to do this," I said, once my voice came back to me. "Whatever you think you're proving. This isn't proving it.""You don't get to tell me what this proves." His jaw was tight, staring straight ahead at the back of the driver's headrest, none of the easy charm left in him now. "You don't know what it's like. Watching someone hand you scraps your whole life and call it generosity.""So this is about Angelo.""This is about everything." He finally looked at me, and something in his face had cracked open, raw in a way I'd never seen from him, not even in the hallway that first week. "I did everything right. I gave him loyalty. I gave him years. And every time I asked for so

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 30

Milene's POVThe exchange point turned out to be an old boathouse, half collapsed, moonlight slicing through gaps in the roof where shingles had long since given up. Enzo had described it as abandoned for years, which explained the smell of rot and salt water thick enough to catch in the back of my throat the second I stepped out of the car.Roberto was waiting when I arrived, leaning against a support beam like he'd been standing there all night, unbothered, that same easy smile in place despite everything. Mia sat on an overturned crate a few feet from him, hands bound in front of her, a bruise blooming along her cheekbone that hadn't been there two days ago. My chest tightened at the sight of it."There she is," Roberto said, pushing off the beam. "I was starting to think my brother would try something clever instead.""I'm here," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Let her go.""In a minute." His eyes moved over me slowly, and I forced myse

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 29

Milene's POVNobody slept. The house moved through the next two days in a strange, brittle version of normal, meals nobody ate, conversations that trailed off halfway through, everyone waiting for a phone to ring.Enzo's people found nothing in the first twenty four hours. No trace of the car past the coastal road, no confirmed sighting of Roberto at any of the properties they checked, just silence stretched thin over every hour that passed. I watched Angelo age in front of me during that stretch, the exhaustion carving itself deeper into his face every time another lead came back empty. It was the second night, close to midnight, when Roberto called again.Angelo put it on speaker this time, in the study, Enzo and Mara and I all standing close enough to hear, and Roberto's voice came through easy and unhurried, like none of this had cost him a single night's sleep."Tick tock, brother," he said. "You're running out of hours.""Let me hear h

  • Auctioned to the mafia land   Chapter 28

Milene's POVNobody moved for a second. It felt like the whole house had stopped breathing along with me."Where," Angelo said, and the word came out so quiet it was almost worse than if he'd shouted it."I don't know yet." Enzo's hands were still shaking around his phone. "The car she took, we tracked it as far as the old coastal road, then it just... stopped transmitting. Same as the cameras in the east corridor. He's had help cutting our tracking, boss. This wasn't done alone.""Mikhail," Angelo said, the name coming out like something bitter. "He's been giving Roberto resources this whole time. That's how he's stayed hidden for weeks.""We don't know that yet.""We don't know anything yet," Angelo snapped, and it was the first time I'd heard him raise his voice at Enzo in all the months I'd known him. He caught himself almost instantly, pressing the heel of his hand against his eyes like he could push the panic back down by force. "I'm s

Milene's POV"Where's my wing," I said, already moving toward the door, though some part of me already understood the question didn't make sense the second it left my mouth. Of course I knew where my wing was. What I meant was, where's the danger, how close is it, how much time do I have."Stay here," Angelo said, catching my arm before I could get past him, his grip firm enough to stop me but careful enough that it didn't hurt. "Enzo, get eyes on the east corridor. Now.""Already sent two men," Enzo said, already halfway out the door himself, phone pressed to his ear, voice low and clipped in a way that made my skin crawl. "Nothing on the cameras past eleven forty. Feed just... cuts.""Cuts how?""Like someone knew exactly where they were pointed."Angelo's jaw tightened, and for a second I watched him war with something, whether to leave me here where it was supposedly safe or keep me close enough to see with his own eyes that I was still

Angelo listened with his jaw tight the whole drive home, and when I finished, he was quiet long enough that I thought he might not respond at all."You believe her," he said finally. Not a question."I do.""Why?"I thought about the way her hands had shaken around that coffee cup, the brittle grief underneath her fury. "Because she didn't have to tell me any of it. She could have let me walk in there scared and confused and said nothing useful at all, and instead she told me things that could get her in trouble with her own father if he knew."Angelo didn't argue, which told me more than agreement would have.I didn't tell him about the gir
