Trouble

I started slumbering till I felt like the car had parked. Slowly, I opened my eyes searching from left to right.

My new surrounding was stranged to me, I wonder if this was even the right address. "We are here," the driver spat sourly.

I nodded apprehensively. The rain had reduced the way it was pouring a while ago, and it was now drizzling.

The house did not have a gate, so the driver had alighted few meters from the house. I even wonder if people even lived here.

The paint was faded, and the massive structure that laid before me resembled more of an ancient castle that was in ruin.

Well, this could be readjusted with a little paint, wisely chosen. Well, I am not an expert in that domain.

Sighing, I slowly came down from the car.

The little droplets of rain hit my flesh like bullets, urging me to settle my bills and rush towards the house where shelter could be.

I wonder if the other ladies were already here, am I fortunate enough to have this job? well, if being a new mother for a kid or more could be the last option, then I'll readily dive into it.

From reading several comments on Twitter, I came to realize that the man always put up a new list for a new wife each season, and had succeeded to recruit five wives, they all left because of the same reason.

Someone even said that he earned the ladies' promised that they wouldn't breathe a word about their experience in the Venaclurry mansion.

I wonder what my own experience might look like, I am really nervous just thinking about it.

"Madam, please pay me," the driver commanded.

Well, I had not forgotten about his payment, my wet hair and clothes had even soaked his car, so the only thing he deserves is his money because he worked for it.

"Yes Sir, let me just remove my purse from my bag and hand it to you," I explained.

As usual, he didn't offer a word to me, as a taxi driver, I even wondered if he ever made any true conversation with his passengers, or was having a car such a big thing to him? I wondered fiercely.

Searching my bag, I couldn't find my purse, it seemed like it had sloped itself deep into the bag.

"Excuse me, Sir, give me a minute so I can find my purse, it seemed to be stuck somewhere inside my bag," I complained.

Naturally, the bag I carried was a small bag, it was flowerish, and the reason why I had chosen this bag for today is that it matched with my shoes and was the only bag that was still in good condition.

I knew that my purse was inside my bag, I just needed time to find it, besides, the rain was pouring hard on me.

*

My heart is now pounding heavily, I've scattered my bag searching for my wallet to no avail, I thought I had placed it in my handbag but it looks like I hadn't. My breathing was now clutched as I felt my chest tighten up. The driver is now starting to grow impatient as he wants to go.

"Madam, haven't you seen the money?" he asked in a ragged voice.

I wanted to lie by saying I've found it, but then, that will mean me given him the money. The only choice I had now was to speak the truth, the whole truth, it was going to be harsh on me and I dreaded it already.

"Mr. driver," I commenced as the man horned endlessly to get my attention.

As the man started horning, I panicked because I was frightened about the fact that the people of the Venaclurry would come out wondering what was actually going on.

"My money, young lady, I need to start going," he explained losing his temper already.

My heart was now thumping as I looked for a sincere way to tell this man that I could not find the money I had kept in my bag.

"Ughhm! Mr... I can't find the money I was supposed to use and pay you with," I muttered honestly.

"What? you can't find what?" he thundered opening the side of his door as he matched down from the car.

Wow! I didn't notice this man had this kind of height especially when he sat behind the steering. I looked about 5'6 meters tall and was slim.

He looked like a strong man who had chosen the wrong profession.

His mere presence scared the hell out of me, I feared him already.

In a shaky voice, I replied to him gently,

"I can't... find my purse, and the money I am supposed to use to pay you is inside," I cried out.

His baritone made me skip in fright.

"You must be joking lady, you better look for the money or be ready to face my anger," the driver threatened.

I am someone who does not like a public disgrace to the least, in fact, I always make sure to be as decent as possible, and when I actually encounter strangers, I try my best to be polite with them.

I gulped hard as a droplet of rain-streaked down my face.

Searching through my back a hundred times today, I still didn't find any purse nor money to give him.

The only items in my bag were a notepad, a pen, and some drugs.

Yes, I always walked with drugs in case pains want to shut through my body, I'll have a backup immediately.

I remember once when I had an issue with my kidney,  it burnt like I was going to die. My drugs were nowhere to be found making me too miserable and feeble.

That day, if not for the fact that I was in a public space with a lot of good samaritans around, I would be in heaven with my mom and dad smiling at one another.

The people rushed me to the hospital and after treatment, I was better.

Searching through the bag, I knew there was absolutely no hope for me.
