Zoey Blake swore off athletes the day she caught her hockey player boyfriend cheating with a cheerleader. She's done with games, on and off the ice, and plans to keep her distance from that world for good. But when her new tutoring assignment lands her with four players from her ex’s rival team, staying away gets complicated. They're nothing like she expected, frustrating, funny, and unexpectedly kind. And when they ask her to help with a plan to get back at her ex, she agrees, even if it means pretending to be part of their world again. What starts as a simple favour slowly blurs the lines Zoey worked hard to draw. The more time she spends with them, the harder it becomes to remember why she built those walls in the first place. She promised herself she’d never fall for another hockey player. She never imagined four of them might change her mind.

My life was a complete mess after catching my boyfriend Orion Gritton, the star hockey player from Oakwood University cheating with a cheerleader. That alone would’ve been enough to wreck me. But getting dumped by him in front of the entire state during his big game? That was a new level of humiliation.
All I wanted to do afterward was crawl under my blanket, disappear forever, and pretend none of it happened. But life doesn’t work like that. I had to get up eventually, had to step out of my tiny dorm room and face the world again.
So today, I forced myself to get dressed. I tugged on my favorite oversized Riverview University hoodie and a pair of ripped black jeans that felt like armor more than clothing. I shoved my hair into a loose ponytail, even though a few stubborn strands kept falling around my face like they were mocking me.
When I finally arrived at Riverview University’s main campus I let out a tired groan as I stared at the building. I stayed there for a moment, not bothering to take a step forward.
I inhaled. Exhaled. Inhaled again.
Then I checked my reflection, using my phone screen for the fifth time , no smudged mascara, no leftover tears. Just me. Zoey Blake. Ex-girlfriend of Orion Gritton. I hated that title more than anything. But today, I had no choice but to face it and the people who had watched my humiliation head-on.
I finally took a step forward, my white sneakers squeaking on the pavement. My oversized Riverview hoodie almost swallowed me whole. At least it made me feel like I could hide.
As I walked toward the main building, I heard the whispers.
“That’s her… the one he dumped for Layla.”
“She’s the girl, right? The one who went psycho?”
“She actually looks normal…”
“I don’t know why she didn’t settle for boys at our school.”
My stomach twisted. I pulled my hoodie tighter around me and kept my head down.
I used to dream of going to college and having a normal life, getting straight As, and maybe joining a book club. But no, I had to fall for Orion Gritton. The guy with messy dark hair that always fell into his icy blue eyes. The same eyes that looked at me like I was his entire world until he traded me for Layla, the cheer captain with a face like a porcelain doll and an ego big enough to swallow a stadium.I promised myself I’d never even look at another cheerleader again. I also promised myself I would be laser-focused on my studies nothing else. No side distraction, just school.
“ZOEY!” I jumped as I heard that infamous squeal which was my best friend Julie. I didn’t expect her to speak to me after the breakup I wasn’t really close to her after I started dating Orion. I did try to make our friendship work but Orion was jealous. He always wanted me to himself.
It was pretty terrible balancing a possessive boyfriend and energetic friend and trust me I did a terrible job.
My eyes swept over Julie and I noticed she was wearing her usual artsy style: big denim overalls covered in paint splatters, a white crop top underneath, and platform sneakers that made her almost as tall as me.
“I didn’t expect you to speak to me,” I breathed, clutching my chest.
She laughed and threw an arm around me. “I made a promise to always stick by your side through thick and thin. I’m keeping to it.”
“So you have forgiven me for ditching you for Orion or this is just you pitying me?”
She shrugged. “Call it what you want, I only came here to tell you to Ignore those losers staring at you. They’re all idiots.”I forced a small smile. “I know. It’s just… hard. I can’t help it.”
“Well, you better start helping it. Don’t let that dumbass ruin your year.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but just then, my phone buzzed notifying me that I had class. Julie gave me a gentle push. “Go! You’re gonna be late for Dr. Harrington’s class.”
I sighed and walked into the building, weaving through clusters of students in the hallway. When I finally stepped into the lecture hall, Dr. Harrington’s sharp gray eyes immediately pinned me down.
“Miss Blake,” he called out, making me freeze in the doorway. “See me after class.”
Heat crawled up my neck. Everyone turned to stare. Fantastic. Just what I needed.I shuffled to my seat near the back, sliding in and trying to shrink into myself. As he started the lecture on advanced behavioral psychology, my mind drifted to Orion. His smirk. That night he came back smelling like cheap perfume and lies. The blurry videos that ended up online. Layla’s fake-ass apology video where she blamed “fate” for their love story.
I snapped out of it when Dr. Harrington clapped his hands sharply at the end of class.
“Miss Blake, front.”I stood up, my legs were wobbly as I walked. The rest of the students trickled out, some glancing back at me like I was about to be executed. I felt like poking a hand in their eye but I just had to control myself.
Dr. Harrington leaned against the desk, as I moved towards his direction. “Are you going to tell me to visit the guidance counselor because I know you saw the videos.”
He shook his head. “No!”
I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
“I haven’t seen any need for that yet.” He said as took a step closer.
“And there wouldn’t be any need for that all.” I said sharply wondering where he was going with this and what he wanted to speak to me about.
“Zoey,” the sound of his voice calling out my name made me straighten up. “I know you’ve had… personal challenges this past semester, but your GPA remains exceptional.”
I swallowed. “Thank you, sir.”
He nodded slowly. “Because of your performance, we’re assigning you as a tutor for a special group this term. You’ll receive extra credit toward your scholarship requirements.”
My heart dropped. “A tutor?”
“Yes. You’ll be working with some of the university athletes. It’s an honor and a necessity if you want to maintain your scholarship.”
I clenched my hands at my sides. “I… I really wasn’t planning on—”
He cut me off with a sharp glance. “You need the credit, Miss Blake. Consider it non-negotiable.”
I bit my lip. He was right. My scholarship was already on thin ice after all the distractions last year. I had no choice. “I’ll do it,” I muttered.
“Good,” he said. “They’re waiting at the tutoring center now.”
I nodded and walked out, my heart pounding in my ears. I took the long route across campus, passing the main quad where some students were tossing frisbees and others sprawled out in the grass. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down.
When I reached the tutoring center, I stopped outside the door and pressed my hand to my chest. “You can do this, Zoey,” I whispered to myself. “They’re just athletes. It’ll be fine.”
I finally pushed open the door.
The first thing I noticed was the smell of cologne, sweat, and a weird spicy deodorant scent. Then my eyes landed on four guys sitting at a round table, each wearing the dark green Ridgeview Titans varsity jackets. Their team logo which was a roaring titan head was stitched proudly on their chests.
My heart dropped straight to my shoes.
The guy closest to me had a messy mop of honey-brown curls tousled on top of his head, bright blue eyes, and a bored expression as he scrolled on his phone. That had to be Rowan.
Next to him was a tall, sharp-faced guy with hazel eyes, a jawline that looked carved from marble, and a tiny scar on his left eyebrow. Emrys.
Another leaned back in his chair, arms folded behind his head, showing off toned arms. His dark blonde hair were tied in a low ponytail, and his deep brown eyes were fixed lazily on the ceiling. Julie had told me about him once. He was Kieran. The leader and a big time jock.
The last one had jet-black hair slicked back, emerald green eyes that looked like they could see through every lie you’d ever told. That was Casper. He hardly speaks, and every girl in school wants to desperately get in his pants. Only Anna, one of the girls in the cheerleading team that ever got close enough.
As I froze in the doorway, Emrys lifted his gaze to me, eyes narrowing with curiosity.
Then Kieran smirked, leaning forward. “Well, well, well,” he drawled. “Didn’t expect the girl who broke Orion Gritton to be this cute.”My heart slammed into my ribs so hard I thought I might actually faint.
My mind was screaming at me to turn and run, but my feet felt like they were glued to the floor. I could feel their eyes on me, burning, and judging me all at once. I felt like I just stepped right into a den filled with lions.
Zoey.“Did you really beat him up?” I asked again, their silence has always spoken out for them. I palmed my face. “I told you not to beat yourself up for someone like Orion. He is a dick.” I cursed.I didn’t want to sound so hard on them, because just staring at his knuckles was killing me. “I had to. He was being a dick as you had said and needed to learn a lesson.” Rowan gritted. It was evident that he was still angry. So instead of fighting it off with him, I chose the other way. “Who treated the wound?” I looked around the room, only to be shocked that Casper actually did it. He didn’t really look like the type to show so much affection. “Well, you did a bad job.” I told him, my tone low so that it almost came out as a joke.“I told him.” Emrys agreed. “But he wouldn’t take it, and loved playing the nurse.” He added, which earned him a side hit from Casper.I laughed out, easing the tension in the room. I dragged out a chair for Rowan, helping him on. “Can I get the first aid?”
Zoey. The fresh aroma of bacon and pancakes hit my nose as I walked into the dinning area. The boys were already seated, except one person was missing. It was Rowan, I had expected it after everything that had happened last night. “Good mor…” Emrys started, but stopped mid ways as his eyes raked through my entire body. That helped him get the attention of the rest of the boys and Kieran drew in a soft breath. “You should have warn us, little gem.” Kieran whistled. “How do expect us to eat with a hard on now?” I shook my head, letting the imagination go away. I was wearing nothing but the blue Chelsea jersey that I had found in the closet. There was nothing beneath it, as I didn’t pack for an overnight back and I couldn’t rewear the one from last night. I knew how perky my nipples were, they rubbed hard under the soft fabric, making me regret my decision instantly. “Don’t be a dick, Kieran.” Casper called out. He had only laid his eyes on me for what seemed like ten second
Zoey. I slowly opened my eyes, groaning as the sunlight streamed through the windows. It hit me like a ton of bricks. My head was pounding, my mouth dried up and my body felt like it weighted more than a thousand. If I had kept reminding myself of what could be the outcomes of taking that much alcohol, then I wouldn’t have even tried it for a bit.I spat out a hair that had laced itself with my tongue, my eyes roaming around the room and the memories of last night came flooding. What was even funny was that Orion’s words don’t matter anymore. It doesn’t even hurt, like I had thought it would. But the way that Rowan had acted. When I had thought that he was someone that understood me. He didn’t have to even fight Orion off for no reason. “Forget about it, Zee.” I chanted off.It was too early, or rather too late for me to keep pondering over the event. I had said it myself, Orion wasn’t worth it and he had never been worth it. “Goodness.” I mumbled, sitting up.As my feet hit the fl
"You let the bastard go?" Kieran asked through gritted teeth. The party had somehow ended and Rowan had filled them up about what had happened, even though the anger that he felt for not beating up Orion, and he had only let him go just because of Zoey.He let him go, not promised not to touch him behind the curtains. "I had to go after her." He answered, biting his tongue in annoyance. It was a habit that he had always done when he was angry, and today, he was feeling the urge to hit something hard, someone that was just Orion."Come with me." Emrys grabbed Rowan by the collar. They needed to get the job done that night, that even if they had ended up killing Orion, no one would point a finger at them. They had an alibi, which was why they were going to leave Kieran and Casper to take care of Zoey. When Kieran had checked on her earlier, she was deep asleep. "I think I heard her snoring." He had said, but he wasn't sure."What are you going to do?" It was Casper that asked. He hadn't
Zoey.I had no time to process what Orion had just said to me, or even respond to him, as he got pushed, almost falling down the railing. I let out a loud scream, scared that he could end up falling right there. "What the fuck did you just say?" Rowan spat.Despite the fact that the music had blocked out every single noise around us, he had managed to hear the words that Orion had thrown at me. I felt seen at the moment. "I dare you to repeat it."Orion, even at the verge of being thrown off the low tide builing, he had the urge to own a smirk on his face. "I said she is so cheap, just like a dollar bil condom and I didn't lie." He repeated, his face held no emotions and I couldn't tell if he was scared or masking it up."Fucking fuck." I heard Rowan mumbled, before he buckled him up, against the railing. With a swift move, just a single one meant ending the life of Orion and that meant, Rowan risking his life for something as stupid as this."No." I managed to voice out. As much as
Zoey.I had thought that the surprises were going to end, but I was so fast to think of it that way. I was blindfolded, with Emrys dragging me into a house, or it could even be anything that I had no idea of."You won't really tell me where you are taking me to?" I asked him, trying to get my hands out of his hold.I should have known the boys were up to something when they kept asking me for my best friend and how comes she hasn't been around me for a while. Then Rowan went ahead to get her number, saying that she had caught his eyes. But we all knew that it was a lie. Julie wasn't the type of girl that he would want, she was just a ray of sunshine, unlike him that was dark, his personality screaming of a bad boy. The sound of music grew louder the further we walked into the open space. It wasn’t just a speaker, it was full music, the type that echoed in the entire space. My heart started to beat a little faster. I could hear laughter, footsteps, voices I didn’t recognize right away
