“I am." I took a staggering step forward.
She glared at me like a hunting hawk before opening the gate widely. “You have a visitor." “Visitor?!" I mused, my mind spiralling with different thoughts. Who could the visitor be? I am just an orphan. I have no family. The only family I have is Maverick, my husband. Could the visitor be Maverick? Curiosity took me out of the cell and I trailed behind the Warden, my chest hammering against my chest, audible in my ear as my thoughts about who the visitor could be made tension rose in my heart. Getting to the door of the visiting room, the warden stepped aside while I stood before the door with a drumming heart. Slowly, I raised my hand and reached the door handle. Click! I twisted it and the door gave way before I pushed it further, revealing a spacious room with just a table and two chairs. Seated on one of the chairs is a man who has dark hair, backing me. I gulped hard and took a step into the room, closing the door behind. Silence mixed with tension and everything crashed on me, giving me an emotional stagger. I pressed further, slowly revealing the face of the man from his side look till I stood before him. It was Maverick! My husband! My heart leaped with joy! “Maverick!?" I called with disbelief in my voice as my heart swirled with joy. I sat down facing Maverick. On the table is a file which I didn't notice. Nothing around matters to me but his presence. I felt like hugging him, kissing him all over and telling him how much I miss him. My absence must have made him feel empty and rigid which was why he came to see me. I thought. I reached out for his hand on the table but he withdrew it. My smile faltered slightly and my eyes met his cold expression which I mistaken for his anger over my negligence. “I'm sorry honey. I know I never bothered to check on you but you need to skip my faults." I said with a low pleading voice when he's the one who should have checked on me but love hypnotized me, I was too blind to see the bold handwriting on the wall. Maverick didn't speak. He simply pushed the file on the table across to me and leaned backward on the chair. “Sign it." He said, his voice cold and gaze rigid. I averted my eyes to the file, my eyes lightened up. “You're getting me out of here so quick!!?!" I was elated, thinking Maverick had come to fulfill his promise even before time. With a heart drumming with joy, I reached out to the file and opened it. I retrieved a white paper inside and stared at it , my gaze scanning on it, grasping the content. The smile on my face faltered, replaced with a deep frown. “Divorce agreement?" I looked up, my brow knotted as confusion flashed in my eyes. Maverick nodded gently and said. “Just like you see. Sign it. I'm quitting the marriage." He simply said, his words hanging in the air. It was as if everything around me froze. Could I be hearing things? Did Maverick just tell me he's quitting the marriage?! I looked up with a trembling hand. “What is this all about Maverick? Are...are you trying to play a prank on me!?" I stuttered, not willing to believe the unfolding reality. Maverick scoffed. “You're not blind Olivia and neither are you deaf. You heard me well the first time." He said impatiently, his once gentle voice harsh and uninviting. The reality of the situation dawned on me. Maverick is divorcing me! My hand quivered on the paper. “Why are you doing this Maverick? I have been loyal to you…I have done everything for you. I jeopardize my career just for your sake and is this how you repay me for all I have done!?" I blurted, tears clouded in my eyes, threatening to spill. “This isn't about loyalty, Olivia. I can't be seen with a criminal." Maverick cut in, twisting his lips disgustingly after blurting the words carelessly. The weight of the word ‘criminal’ pressed on me, the air that mixed with the word choked me, snapping a nerve in my body. Maverick, just call me a criminal! “Do you realize you're the criminal here Maverick?!! How dare you spit rubbish from your mouth! I am here all because of you and only for you to open your mouth and call your own wife a criminal!!!?" I blasted out, standing up sharply, my anger spilling over. Maverick scoffed, mocking laced in his voice “Wife? Huh. Not anymore dear. After you ink the divorce paper with your signature, you'll become my past. My ex. Criminal ex." He said with a little laugh. I slammed my hand on the table and picked up the divorce paper, tearing it into pieces and I threw it at him. “I'm not going to sign it! Mark my words! You ingrate! You damned betrayal!!" I raised my voice, my anger filling the room. Maverick laughed and stood up with both hands in his pocket. “Are you done bluffing?" He raised his brow and took a step forward, meeting my angry gaze. “Let me burst your bubble dear. I am prepared for this reaction and I know this isn't going to be easy. I have printed thousands of copies of the divorce paper which my lawyer will bring next time because you're not going to see me here anymore." He said and began to walk out. He was walking out of my life after everything I did for him. I am in this hell hole because of him! My career, my freedom and innocence..i gave up everything just for his sake! My eyes became red with anger, tears clouded therein, slipping down from my eyes. I felt as though my world had just torn apart. I cleaned my fingers into fists. “I swear you're going to pay for this Maverick!! You bastard!!" I barked out, heart bleeding with pain. Maverick stopped at the door, a smug grin tugging on his lips. “Let's see how you're going to survive here." He said threateningly and walked out, slamming the door shut.I returned back to my cell to see Grace pacing restlessly.Concern etched all over faces like a woman who has a pregnant relative in the emergency ward. She walked to me with the same concerned stance while Amaya watched us from the bed.“Who called you out?" She asked softly but her voice was thick with concern.“Gianna." I simply said with a soft sigh and walked to the bed without waiting to see the expression on her face.Amaya looked at me surprisingly when she heard the name I mentioned. It was as if the name Carried the weight of a story untold.“Gianna called you out!?" Grace walked to me, surprise tingling in her voice.I nodded without any remorse.“It's just Gianna." I hissed.Grace shook her heart. “Just Gianna?" He scoffed and looked into my eyes. “What business do you have with the devil!?" She boomed.“Devil?" I repeated with a raised brow, taking interest now."Gianna is not just a prisoner here. She's the oldest and controls the affairs here. Have you wondered why she
Getting back to my cell, I began to pace up and down while Grace and Amaya glanced at each other wondering why I returned only to look worried.Ruto is right. Men are scum! I was feeling the same rage she felt over her boyfriend's betrayal and I wished for nothing but to put a bullet into Maverick's skull.A drop of his thought in my mind makes me effuse angrily. I hate everything about him, his face… his fucking scent!Grace stood up with the cigar clipped between her fingers.“Who came visiting and why are you suddenly looking worried?" She asked worriedly.I gritted my teeth, facing the wall, my chin raised. I turned back to Grace with an eyes red with anger and reached out for the cigar in her hand. She didn't resist but she had a surprising look on her face as I took the cigar to my lips.“I thought you said don't smoke?" She glanced at Amaya on the bed.I drew the content of the cigar and puffed the smoke out in the air. I coughed loudly, the cigar choking me.Grace tried to co

I wondered what Jack must have done to warrant Ruto thinking about killing him and the relationship she has with him. “No matter how gruesome the offence he committed, it shouldn't be worth taking a life.“ I said in my thoughts.“Who is Jack and why do you want to kill him?" I asked, walking beside her.“He's my boyfriend. He betrayed me but he'll pay with his life. Even if he escapes and hides 1000 ft deep in the earth, I'm going to find him and put a bullet into his heart." She said, her voice emitting anger and she quickened her steps towards a telephone booth.I shook my head, my innocent heart processing the whole thing she said.“Betrayal hurts but is it actually worth taking someone's life?" I said rhetorically before following Ruto to the telephone spot. Her finger typed on the buttons of the telephone as she input a number.“Who are you calling?" I asked her.She didn't respond. Rather, she put the phone to her ear and I looked away, observing prisoners moving along the pass
I remained on the floor, nurturing the pain from my dislocated arm.I struggled on my feet, letting out a painful groan as shock cruised through my muscles from the dislocation.“Hello." I held the dislocated arm and forced a smile at girl sitting on the edge of the bed.She glared at me, her expression unreadable. She had her jumpsuit pulled to her waist and tied it around her belly, revealing her navel which the white top top hugging her body couldn't cover. She pulled out a fat cigarette and lit it. She clipped it between her lips and stood up. I took a step backwards fearfully, watching as she puff the smoke from the cigar in the air.“Hi." She gave a deadly smile. I forced a smile. “I'm Olivia." I said with a trembling voice. She nodded and puffed out the smoke again which coiled lazily in the air.“So what do you bring for us Olivia." She said, her voice thick and firm.I stated at her with confusion etching on my face.“What..what do you mean?" I stuttered, careful with my wo
I knew I was going to hell.My name is Olivia. Think of a beautiful lady of 22 yrs, elegant and charming in appearance like the roses of the valley. The worst thing I hate is trouble because I have a delicate heart and never had it crossed my mind to ever hurt a fly but here I am, behind a Hilux with cuffs on my wrists while a chain engulfed my ankles like a criminal.Looking beside me, I saw men dressed in army uniform at my both sides, handling a deadly rifle which they would use to send any unfortunate being to an early grave. None of them were smiling. They look scary and fear grips my fragile heart. As the Hilux drove through the City, I felt the urge to jump down and escape but that is one surest way to die. I'm not going to survive it and the soldiers wouldn't think twice before shooting me dead at any attempt to escape.I know you must be wondering what offense a gentle and beautiful soul like me committed that is about to lead me to one of the deadliest prisons- Rikers priso
