ALORA'S POV

001

The setting sun painted the sky in hues of amber and violet as I walked home from the supermarket. The plastic bags in my hands cut into my palms, but I barely noticed.

Life with Ryan wasn’t perfect after I left my father's house, my mother begged me not to leave but I did.

Ryan and i didn't have much. We scraped by on my earnings as an author, stretching every dollar, but it was enough. We were enough. We had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and love—wasn’t that what mattered?

I climbed the porch steps and reached for the door, but something made me pause. A glint of black caught my eye.

A pair of black heels sat by the entrance.

I frowned. Those weren’t mine.

My grip on the grocery bags tightened.

Ryan had company, but that made no sense. He knew how I felt about unexpected guests, especially women.

I pushed the door open, stepping inside.

The first place my eyes landed on was the table.

A pair of panties lay draped over the edge, delicate lace with tiny heart-shaped designs.

My stomach dropped.

I knew those panties.

Not because they were mine—because they weren’t.

Ryan had bought me a similar pair months ago, but these were a different size. A different fit. Not mine. Someone else’s.

My gaze quickly snapped to the bedroom door, slightly ajar as muffled sounds trickled through the crack—soft, breathless gasps mixed with deep, guttural groans.

My blood ran cold.

Just then a high-pitched moan escaped from the room.

"Oh yes, Ryan! Don’t stop!"

My entire body locked up.

No, I whispered to myself

My mind rebelled against what I was hearing, but the proof was all around me.

"Ugh, that’s so good. Keep going," Ryan’s voice rumbled—deep, familiar, unmistakable.

I staggered forward, my heart pounding against my ribcage like it was trying to escape.

I reached the door. Stopped. My hand hovered over the knob, trembling.

I didn’t want to see it. I didn’t want to know.

But I already did.

With a sharp intake of breath, I pushed the door open.

And my heart shattered.

There, tangled in the sheets of our bed, was Ryan. His body slick with sweat, his hands gripping the hips of the woman straddling him. Her head was thrown back in pleasure, lips parted as she rode him like he belonged to her.

A strangled sound left my throat before I could stop it.

The woman gasped, scrambling for the sheets to cover herself.

Ryan, on the other hand, didn’t move. Didn’t panic. He just lay there, his gaze meeting mine—calm, detached. Like this wasn’t the destruction of everything I had built with him.

“Why, Ryan?” My voice barely came out, raw and broken.

He exhaled, tilting his head. “So now you’ve lost your manners, Alora? You barge in without knocking, you intrude on my privacy, like, who the hell do you think you are?”

I flinched, my eyes widened in shock, who the hell am i?, intrude on his privacy?, what privacy?, I asked myself.

My house, my bed and yet I'm the intruder?

I folded my fist in anger as something inside me snapped, walking towards him I slapped him hard across the face.

You're a cheat Ryan!!, I yelled, a good for nothing cheat.

Ryan clutched his cheek then he gave me a deadly stare, Before suddenly his vicious face was replaced by laughter.

The kind that made me sick.

I couldn't quite get why he was laughing. He only made me more angry but Before I could say another word, he slapped me hard across the face and I fell on the bed due to the impact.

My cheek burned but I forced myself not to cry, just then my eyes landed on the woman who was still on the bed, her face covered with the sheets leaving only her eyes and hair visible.

My anger intensified and I stood up from the bed, I glared at Ryan and without wasting a minute I began walking towards the woman.

The woman shrank back. But then I recalled those eyes, they were familiar, it was then I remembered the face

My breath hitched.

I stumbled back a step, as more tears rolled down my cheeks.

“Ash?”

  • BENEATH THE LIES    IT'S QUITE FANCY, ISN'T IT?

083ALORA'S POV“How… how are you already dressed up, Stanley? It’s been such a short time!” I asked, my voice tinged with disbelief as I took in his impeccably tailored suit, the crisp lines accentuating his broad shoulders. He looked like he’d stepped out of a fashion magazine, not like someone who’d just been wearing a garish floral gown minutes ago.“Let’s just say I’m pretty quick,” he replied with a sly grin, his confidence unshaken. “I ran back to my house, got dressed, and drove back here.”“That’s… that’s impossible!” I stammered, narrowing my eyes. “You cheated, didn’t you? There’s no way you went home. I’m sure of it.”“Do you have any proof?” he countered, raising an eyebrow, his tone challenging yet playful.I bit my lip, frustration bubbling inside me. He was right—I had no proof. “Whatever,” I muttered, waving a hand dismissively, though my mind was still reeling. How was he pulling this off so effortlessly?“So, what eatery am I taking you to, my lady?” Stanley asked,

  • BENEATH THE LIES    SHALL WE?

082*stanley's POV*“Yeah, I know, it all happened suddenly, but he’s a really nice guy, so I decided to go out with him,” Alora said casually, as if she didn’t know I was head over heels for her. Her words hit like a punch to the gut, each syllable twisting the knife a little deeper. My mind raced with questions. Why was she doing this? Was this another one of her random tests to push me to the edge? Maybe she wanted to make me jealous, to see if I’d crack under the pressure and walk away. If that was her plan, she was dead wrong. I wasn’t going to let her win that easily. If she was going on a date with another guy, fine—I’d meet him, and I’d make sure he’d run for the hills without looking back. I’d show her I wasn’t fazed, no matter how much it stung.I heaved a heavy sigh and forced a smile, masking the turmoil churning inside me. Alora’s eyes widened, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. She clearly hadn’t expected me to take it so calmly. “I’ll be happy to take you to your

  • BENEATH THE LIES    SOMEONE SPECIAL.

081“What the heck is all this?” I yelled, my voice echoing in the small kitchen as I stared at the two little monsters standing amidst the chaos they’d created. Flour coated the floor, the counter, and even their faces, turning them into ghostly figures. The most infuriating part was the smug smiles tugging at their lips, as if they were proud of the disaster they’d caused. The twins stared back at me, wide-eyed, feigning innocence as if they had no idea what they’d done. One of them clutched a container of milk—milk that had been stored in a cupboard well beyond her reach. How had a child not even four feet tall managed to get it? My mind raced, picturing them climbing the shelves like tiny, mischievous monkeys.I pressed a hand to my forehead, frustration mounting. What would Alora think if she came back to this mess? I couldn’t let these kids make me fail her task. Their giggles only fueled my determination. They were clearly pleased with their handiwork, but they didn’t know they

  • BENEATH THE LIES    LITTLE MONSTERS

080*Alora's POV*I chuckled, unable to suppress my amusement. “To be honest, you look absolutely stunning, Stanley,” I said, my voice dripping with playful mockery. Standing up, I grabbed my bag from the table, slinging it over my shoulder. “Since you’re all dressed up now, I guess it’s time for me to take my leave. I’ll be back in a matter of minutes, so don’t get too overwhelmed. They’re just kids.”Stanley rolled his eyes, the floral gown making him look like a bizarre cross between a bodybuilder and a grandmother. “Whatever, just get going, okay?” he said, his tone laced with exasperation. “The longer you take to get back, the longer I’m stuck with these little monsters.”“Hey, don’t call them monsters in their presence!” I scolded, shooting him a pointed look. I walked over to the twins, who were watching us with wide, curious eyes, and placed a gentle hand on each of their shoulders. “He didn’t mean what he said, okay? You’re not monsters—you’re good girls, aren’t you?”They bo

  • BENEATH THE LIES    HAPPY?

079I gulped as Stanley leaned in closer, our lips mere inches apart. His question echoed in my mind, intensifying the tension between us. He was right—we both felt the pull, the undeniable spark that crackled in the air. So, what was holding us back? The answer came crashing in like a wave: fear. The memory of my heart shattering into a thousand pieces, the pain of betrayal still raw from past wounds. I couldn’t let it happen again. Not with Stanley. My mind flashed to the past—how Stanley had believed the baseless allegations thrown at me, how he’d sided with Charles at first, leaving me to question his loyalty. Trusting him now felt like stepping onto thin ice, knowing it could crack beneath me. No matter how much my body responded to his closeness, my heart wasn’t ready to take that risk.I snapped back to reality, as if waking from a daze. Before his lips could brush against mine, I acted on instinct, delivering a swift kick to his groin. He stumbled to the ground, groaning in pa

  • BENEATH THE LIES    WHAT'S STOPPING US?.

078“This is the height of it, Alora!” I exclaimed, my voice thick with exasperation. “I can’t possibly do this. Isn’t it enough that I’m babysitting? Now I have to put on a gown to please these kids? No, that’s not happening.”She fixed me with a steady gaze, her lips curling into a challenging smile. “So, does that mean you’re giving up?” she asked squarely. “I mean, it wouldn’t be so bad if you quit now.”I bit my lip, her words stinging like a well-aimed dart. She knew exactly how to push my buttons, and it was infuriating. I reminded myself that I was the slave in this arrangement, and she was the one calling the shots. If I wanted to win her heart—and I was determined to do so—I had to play by her rules, no matter how absurd. The thought of failing her, of walking away without proving my devotion, was unbearable. I couldn’t let her win this easily.“Fine,” I said, my voice low and reluctant. “I’ll wear the gown.” I snatched the floral monstrosity from her hand and tossed it onto
