I sat in that meeting room for over thirty minutes, but my head was never in the room.

My thoughts were somewhere else, and I can only deceive myself if I say they weren’t with Amara. locked up in the guardroom.,

People around the table were talking. Some were sharing figures, others were going through the security report. I could see all of them, but I wasn’t hearing anybody.

The first time someone asked for my input, I didn’t even realise they were talking to me.

“Mr. Romano?” the older man at the end of the table called again.

I looked up slowly. “Yes?”

“We were asking for your position on the final clause.”

I stared at him like I didn’t understand English. Then I cleared my throat.

“I’ll look into it,” I said, even though I had no idea what clause they were talking about.

They nodded and moved on, but I knew they had noticed my distraction.

I tried to read the screen in front of me, but nothing was entering. I could only picture her face—how tired
