LYRA’S POV
I sat in front of the mirror as Abigail, one of the maids worked on my hair. My heart, racing with thoughts of the evening ahead. Jake had earlier informed me I’d be formally introduced to the pack council. As if it was not overwhelming enough, he added I’d be meeting his mother. Just yesterday, I lost everything dear to me and almost my life. And now, I’m about to be introduced as Luna - well, a rather useless one. I can't even shift into my wolf. Of what use would I be? Oh goodness!I exhaled.. “Do you like this hairstyle ma’am?” Abigail asked. Her words literally drew my wandering thoughts back to the present. She had chosen a stunning Chignon hairdo with finely woven braids with loose ripple curls framing my face. “It’s gorgeous”, I said half heartedly, trying to sound calm. I watched her fasten a diamond encrusted necklace around my neck. Jake had gotten it for me earlier today alongside my dress for the evening. He sure does have an eye for fashion to compliment breathtaking looks and status. I stood up, smoothing out my dress after Abigail was done with my hair and makeup. The exquisite lace trim offered a touch of elegance, and the soft, blue fabric perfectly hugged my frame, accentuating my curves in an elegant yet modest manner. I inhaled deeply before stepping out. The clicking sound of my shoe echoed through the hallway and the thought of the worst case scenario that could occur when I entered those doors made my stomach turn. “Breathe Lyra, Breathe! Do not show weakness”, I muttered those words of motivation to myself even though right now, I feel like running away. I grasped the handle of the oakwood door and pushed it open. The high pitched creaking sound of the hinges decided to alert everyone of my presence. I winced inwardly, a wave of nervousness washing over me. Just as magnets, my eyes locked onto Jake's. His lips curled into a warm smile. The soft beam of the Chandeliers illuminated his features. His well tailored tuxedo accentuated his broad shoulders and his slightly disheveled hair added a touch of rugged charm to his elegance. He was indeed breathtaking He stood up and gently walked toward me- his eyes not leaving mine. I could feel Tara, my wolf leaping in excitement. “You look stunning, Lyra,” he said, his voice low and husky. His gaze scanned me from the crown of my head to the sole of my feet. I smiled, my cheeks feeling flushed. “Thank you,” I said barely above a whisper. “Shall we?” Jake stretched out his hand and I interlocked mine with his. With a gentle smile, he walked me to his seat. As much as he acts and looks nonchalant, Jake was a perfect gentleman. Around the table sat about seven high ranking individuals of the pack, their expressions unreadable, ranging from neutral to scrutinizing, as if assessing my worth in an instant. I spotted Beta Damon, Our first meeting was quite an awkward one. “I want you all to meet Lyra,” Jake said. A murmur rang across the room with some sneering, others smiling while some simply nodded. One by one they introduced themselves and welcomed me. “I trust Alpha Jake has made the right choice,” Lisa, Damon’s wife, a woman obviously in her early 30’s with brown hair neatly braided into a french twist, gave me a warm smile and offered words of acknowledgement. I knew from that moment she was going to be my favorite person in the pack. I forced a smile and dipped my head in appreciation. “Thank you everyone”. I shifted my gaze to the last person at the edge of the table, Delta Derrick, and immediately I didn't like him. He stared at me with resentment, his jaw clenched as he studied me, clearly unhappy with my presence. I was a little surprised when I realized I wasn’t backing down from his glare, like I usually would. Before I could dwell on it, the door opened, and a regal-looking woman entered the room. Her dark hair lined with gray strands cascaded down her back. She was tall, beautiful and imposing. I didn’t need to be told who she was. “Mother.” Jake said standing from his seat. The pack members rose from theirs in unison and bowed their heads. I immediately followed their lead. “You can sit.” she commanded. They all straightened, their faces relaxing into smiles. I could see where Jake got his commanding features from because she radiated poise and authority. Her face lit up with a smile as she approached me. “You must be Lyra.” “Ye..Yes your highness” I responded. Without hesitation, she took my hands, her touch gentle yet firm. “You are welcome to ShadowClaw dear.” The kindness in her voice was endearing. She reminded me of my mum. “Thank you, your highness,” I managed to say. “So let’s begin with the main agenda of today” Beta Damon’s voice cut through the moment. “Alpha Jake has found his mate, which has been a big concern to us all as we almost thought she never existed”. A loud burst of laughter spread throughout the room. “Oh! Come off it, Damon, don’t be ridiculous” Jake said with a smirk on his lips. “Would you be kind enough to give us a proper introduction about you, as we don't really know much about our new Luna?”. The question I was feared would arise has now been thrown straight into my face “Where do you come from, Lyra?” Rhea, a red hair woman in obviously her 50’s asked, curiosity laced in her tone. I hesitated a bit. “I… I don’t know much. My parents died when I was six in a rogue attack at the Blood moon pack. The only memories I have are faint… I was raised by my human foster parents until they were attacked and murdered.” I swallowed hard. Silence followed. I felt small under their gazes, but I refused to shrink away. “That’s unfortunate,” Gamma Rhea said thoughtfully. I turned to Jake's with unease setting into my mind. He gently placed his palm on mine with a slight nod. Derrick finally let loose his thought “A Luna should know her lineage, deep rooted to the pack ways, strong…” His gaze flickered to Jake, “and capable”. Damon frowned, “ Derrick, don't!” Derrick responded with an ugly sneer, “What?, you want to say a weak, obviously an Omega, who cannot protect herself is going to rule our pack?” Jake’s grip on his glass tightened, his jaw flexing. “Are you questioning my decision?” he barked, slamming his wine glass on the table. Derrick met his gaze, unflinching. “I’m not Alpha, I was questioning her capacity to lead.” He turned to me, his expression hard. “Can you?” The question struck like a dagger. Disdain dripped from every word he said. That it was factually true, didn't mean I didn't get hurt. How on earth did I think with a resumé like mine, I could make a perfect mate. I bunched up my dress, fisting it with my palm trying to force the pricke of humiliation creeping up inside of me to go away. “Enough of this madness, Derrick!. I could have your head hanging on a spike for treason!”, Tessa charged. “Apologize this minute!” She growled at him for his blatant disrespect. “I’m sorry”. He pleaded even though I knew he wasn't. I slowly dressed my seat backward, politely excusing myself from the room. “Lyra..” Jake called out but Tessa held him back. “You know nothing about me” I said to Derrick as I walked towards him. I never wanted to respond, but something in what he said made me snap. The door slammed behind me as I walked away from the gathering. I exhaled with a sigh, leaning my head against the wall. Tears building up in my eyes. Almost immediately, the door swung open, it was Lisa. “Hey Lyra, I'm so sorry about that,” she said. Her tone, laced with concern. “It's fine, Lisa” I gave her a forced smile. “I’d just take a walk, I need some fresh air”. “I could walk with you”. She insisted, holding my palms. “I promise, I'm fine. I just need some time alone”. I gently slid my hands away from her and slowly walked away. If only death hadn't crossed paths with my parents, I wouldn't be in this mess. I thought as I walked past the kitchen. Amidst the clattering of plates and spoons in the sink, the sound of hushed cackles and whispers drew my attention. “ You think the Alpha will keep her not after he snapped the last time”. My steps faltered. “It’s just a matter of time before she finds out who he is, you know…” I reached for an old wooden box by the nursery bed and quietly climbed closer to the window. “....I hear he murdered his mate, Alisha. I gasped in shock, falling off the unstable box I climbed on. “Who is that?”LYRA'S POV I scrambled to my feet, my heart was beating so fast that I was gasping and exhaling long breaths almost simultaneously. Leaned against the wall waiting for the unsettling murmurs in the kitchen to slowly die down. Moments later, it was replaced by clattering of utensils and footsteps shortly before the switch was turned off. This was a cue I had to leave immediately before anyone saw me.I quickly made my way back to my room with my thoughts racing with what I just heard. He murdered his mate? That couldn't be possible or could it? .I badged into my room, quickly shutting the door behind me. My palms were sweating and my hands trembling. Could it be true? I wondered. But then, what do I truly know about him? He was an alpha, a leader forged in ruthlessness. Secrets were bound to exist. The meeting with the council members had already left me shaken, and now this? It was a lot to process. I laid on the bed, sleep refusing to come until darkness overwhelmed me. *****I wo
JAKE’S POVThe incident at last full Blood Moon haunted me everyday. The memory persisted in my mind like a festering wound that would not go away, regardless of how much time had passed.I remembered the heat of it, the way my blood boiled as my wolf, Lucio, struggled for control. The Blood Moon's tug was more powerful than anything I had ever experienced. My entire body shook, my muscles tensing up and my claws sticking out against my will. I had tried to resist it. But it was more powerful. And Alisha paid the price. She had looked at me with such love, even in her final moments. Her dark eyes, wide with fear but unwavering in trust."Jake, it’s me," she had whispered, hands cradling her stomach, protecting our unborn child. But I hadn’t heard her. Not truly. The beast inside me had drowned out everything—her voice, her scent, her pain. Her body laid lifeless beneath me. My claws buried in her chest. The howl of agony that ripped from my throat when reality snapped back.I had kill
LYRA’S POVI stood there in the arena, battered and breathless. Blood dripped from the deep cut on my side and arm. I could barely move. My opponent towered towards me. Her eyes, red, burning with cruel satisfaction.“You failed yet again!” She sneered. Before I could react, it's body contorted into sickening cracks, muscles ripping apart, bones stretching, saliva dripping, bloodshot eyes, slowly transitioning into a ferocious monster.I tried to escape but my body felt frozen. The ground beneath me split open, black twigs sprawled upwards, twisting around my legs, dragging me down into darkness. “No, let me go!” I struggled, trying to break free, but it wouldn't let go. I clawed dirt, trying to get a grip on something but its pull was stronger.“You are mine.” It growled. Its claws sliced through my face with a swipe as it dragged me into the underworld.“NO!!!!”I jolted from my bed, my eyes fluttering as I tried to adjust to the dark surroundings. My breathing was ragged, confusio
LYRA’S POVThe quietness in the room was broken by my alarm buzzing sound. I let out a moan and slammed it shut. For a few seconds, I considered sliding back under the duvet but the constant movement and footsteps around the house succeeded in pulling my mind awake.“Jeezzz…don't y'all sleep?”. I rolled over my pillow, muffling my mouth with it before letting out my frustration in a muffled scream.Today is my first day of training. For a moment, I stared into the ceiling thinking of how best to make this work. I let out a deep sigh before rolling over the bed, forcing myself up, and making my way to the bathroom.I gripped the sink, staring at myself in the mirror. With pale skin and eye bags, I didn't look like someone cut out for a fight. Come to think of it, I had always imagined mate Bond being all rosy and a happily-ever-after union. Not some Vikings show-off. Pushing the thought aside, I grabbed my towel and entered the shower.I quickly dressed up and made my way to the kitche
JAKE'S POVI hurried off with what seemed like the speed of light. I didn’t know where I was going at first but I kept running. Away from Lyra, away from the pack, away from myself!..I burst out to the lakeside. There was something about the scenery that gave me a rather calming effect, so it became my spot when I was troubled.I dropped to my knees by the water bank, digging my claws into the sand before letting out a loud growl. “Ahhhhh… why me? Why always me?” I screamed my lungs out. “ Why have you forsaken me, moon goddess? I never brought this upon myself. Haven't you punished me enough?”. “You took my wife! My son! And when I was beginning to build another life, you were back to steal it too.” I punched hard on the ground, tears streaming down my cheeks.I could still remember the smile on Alisha’s face that night. It was a day to our anniversary and we had organized a pre-anniversary dinner- just the two of us. I knelt in front of her, my ears slightly resting on her baby
LYRA'S POVWhat in the good heavens just happened? I hadn’t expected him to lash out like that or did I do anything to trigger his temper? I kept pondering on what just happened as I walked back to the packhouse clenching my wrist lightly, trying to ease the throbbing pain that stung me as a result of Jake's tight grip. The sight of blood smears on my skin made my stomach twist.“He could’ve killed you,” Tara whispered, her voice finally breaking through the racing thoughts in my mind. “That wasn’t just a slip. Something’s wrong with him.” She kept bellowing loudly but I altered no word.I pushed through the side entrance, avoiding the main hall, but the moment I stepped inside, Abigail’s sharp eyes landed on me.“My goodness! Miss Lyra, what happened?” She exclaimed. Her eyes widened as she rushed forward, her hands already reaching for mine.“I’m fine.” My response was sharp and my body tensed as she tried to inspect the wound. Her flinch made me regret my tone, but I couldn’t brin
LYRA'S POVI held my breath, wincing as one of my maids stumbled, nearly sending my box crashing to the ground. “Please be careful with that,” I called out. I knew what it felt like being an Omega in a pack as big as this- fragile and vulnerable. Just that the moon goddess decided to shine her light in my path by mating me with an Alpha causing me to escape that fate.“I'm sorry Ma'am,” she said, adjusting how she held it.I practically was in dire need of an opportunity to get away from the frenzy of the past few weeks. A day or two of fresh air and freedom sounded like bliss.I had earlier discussed with Lisa who mentioned she had a cousin in Eldrida who could be our perfect tour guide.A vehicle pulled in while I was double-checking my belongings in the trunk. I turned to see Lisa. She stepped out with a wide grin on her face. She wore a glittering black sequin dress with slim, single straps. Her brown curls cascaded over her shoulder.“ There she is..!“I said, walking towards her
LYRA'S POVTWO NIGHTS LATER The room was buzzing with energy as we prepared for the club. It was out last night in Eldrida and we were ready to maximize every bit of the night. Janet had been an amazing host and I was sure going to miss her. “ I can't believe our holiday is almost over”. Lisa said, gesturing like a crybaby as she walked over to pick up a call on her phone. I chuckled. “At least you get to go back to a lovely family”.Lisa sat on the bed giggling into her phone. She was speaking to Damon. A pang of jealousy pricked my chest but I pushed it aside. The truth remains that Jake hadn't reached out to me since I left and I couldn't help but wonder if he still cared about me.I was fastening my shirt in front of the mirror when Janet walked in and suddenly burst into laughter.“What in heaven's sake are you wearing? Janet said, staring at me from head to toe. "Don't tell me this is what you plan to wear for the night”I frowned, looking down at my outfit. It was a long den
LYRA’S POV"Help! Help!" I heard the sound of what seemed like distant echoes, distant cries coming from somewhere, far away. It sounded muffled or perhaps hollow, like they were coming through a tunnel. Maybe it was the distant cries of galagos, also known as bush babies. They were common in this area. But it came again, this time clearer, like it was right beside me. I sprang up from the shade I lay under, my senses spiking.Tara surged within me, restless as she sniffed the air, the soil. “Something's wrong,” she whispered. “Use my senses!”I shut my eyes, linking with her. I began to hear the faintest gush of the wind, the distant rustle of dry leaves, melodies, chants of birds building their nest, and every little movement here in the wild. Then I caught the scent- they were real people. I followed it until I found them.Down in a deep, dark pit—at least a dozen of them. Pale faces. Bloodied clothes. Children clinging to their mothers. One of them looked up and screamed, “Please
LYRA'S POVMy fist hurts as I pounded violently against Jake's chest. "Open that damn cage, Jake! Let him out!" I yelled, my voice came out rough with rage. Each word hitched with sharp breaths, my nails clawing at his shirt like they could peel reason into his heart. "You had no right! You can't just lock him up like an animal!" I kept thrashing and telling.Jake stood still, wincing from each hit I threw at him. Not a step backward. One would think he was planted at the spot. He clenched his jaw so tight that the muscles of his head twitched. His chest was rising and falling, but not in rhythm with mine. No words from him. Just utter silence that infuriated me even more."Say something! Do something! Don't you dare keep quiet on me, staring at me like I was some barking dog!" I yelled right in his face. So much, I bet he would have samples of my saliva in his eye. Then, with a suddenness that snapped me back, his hand clamped around my arm. Not harshly, but firm to keep me still. "E
LYRA’S POV“Traitor! May the gods forbid! You deserve to die! Witch!” The clamor of the people echoed in my ear as the Chariot rolled slowly behind the scene unfolding before me.I sat on the open-roof royal chariot with Jake by my side, our fingers interlocked with each other on his thigh watching the crowd boo and throw garbage at Ella who was dragged along the road by mean guards.Partaking in the procession was Selene, who was dressed in her traditional long black robe. Her wavy silver hair cascaded down her shoulders. In her hands was the cup of shame from which Ella must drink from and forever be damned till death calls. Amidst the booing were chants of acknowledgements and praise from the people. “All Hail, Luna Lyra, The first of her name, The queen of shadowclaw!” The voices rose so loud that one would think it was my coronation day. My cheeks were as pink as those of a Barbie doll when a little girl broke through from the crowd, screaming my name and reaching towards me wi
LYRA’S POVThe mention of the name Caspian hit me like a punch in my stomach. Caspian? What would Jake likely be having with Jake? I saw the look on his face when he mentioned Caspian’s name early. It was clearly streaked with Jealousy. On second thought, what could the truth be? Are they brothers? Hell no! Because that would be totally ridiculous.I shot Jake a side-eye long look. “What could that be?” my brow rose as I queried.I felt unease beginning to creep up under my skin as Jake hesitated in giving me a response. His face fell to the ground without a word for what felt like a century. “Come on Jake! You don’t have to kill me with suspense before you let the cat out of the bag,” I nudged his shoulder slightly, with a soft smile slowly appearing on my face.Jake finally looked up, meeting my face with an unreadable expression. “I can see you’re in love with this guy. I can hear the excitement in your tone at the mention of his name, but you don’t have to rub it in,” he threw the
AEMOND'S POV “Sir..sir, I think we have a big problem!” A guard rushed in, panting like he had escaped an attack from a polar bear.I spun sharply. “Are you out of your damn mind?” I snapped, walking towards the guard. "How dare you barge into my chambers without knocking? I'm sure you want this day to be your last here in the pack house as a guard, right? I yelled into his face. The young man recoiled his eyes wide with fear. His face was pale, sweat gathering around his temples. “I…I’m sorry, Alpha Aemond! But it’s urgent. You need to come. Now,” he stuttered, leaning in a bow.I heaved a sigh, seeing how his body shook in fear. "And was that why you had to badge into the chambers like a mad man?” I queried him. My voice, softer and calmer than before. He didn't say another word, just words of apology. Took a long look at him and eased him off the tension in his body. "You may go. I'd be out there in a minute," I waved him off like a housefly, turning back to my seat. He wasted no
DON CARLITO'S POVI stood at my usual spot- The rooftop of my estate overlooking the city. It was past mid-afternoon, but today the weather wasn't harsh. It was windy, though not storm-like, but I couldn't sense it brewing, making me uncomfortable.Today seemed quiet, too damn quiet for a man like me. In my world, silence does not mean peace; it meant tension. It meant something was about to snap and I hated not being ahead of events.I viewed the city through my massive periscope, swaying it left and right, observing the street, which was the breeding site of chaos. "Any news from the head of the shadow boys?" I asked in a carefree tone, still looking through the periscope."Nothing, Sir. The last time I heard from Perez, he informed me the shipments are yet to arrive at the port," my assistant, Quavo, responded sharply. Quavo had been my eyes and ears around the city, sometimes I wonder why I hadn't given him the task of getting me the girl and the damn pendant."We are expecting
AEMOND'S POVWalking through the halls of the pack house felt different this time. I could hear the whispers of my name through every wall I walked past. No one dared to look me in the eyes. Everyone scrambles off at the sight of me.I was headed to the cell when one of the guards ran up to me, hastening his steps to meet up with my pace.“I was informed you called for me Beta Aemond!” He said, gasping for breath.Did he just address me as Beta? What insolence! I stopped abruptly, clenching my fist with a twisted face and slowly turning around with my jaw twisting.“I am going to forgive your ignorance,” I said slowly, raising my eyes to meet that of the guard. “Next time!” I continued with a slow, dragged tone. “You don't address me as Beta! I am Alpha Aemond! And you, along with everyone else, will address me as that!” I hissed. The guard trembled as he bowed his head, apologizing for the misconception. “I am sorry, Alpha Aemond!” He pleaded.I scoffed, waving it off. “I need you to
AEMOND'S POVI paced up and down what remained of the temple, my mind racing with words Valkyrie had told me in the trance. I had to get everything from that little bi**h. I never thought things would go south and now I have to go an extra length to get her. I growled in frustration, turning to Zephyr who stood motionless staring at me.“He offered me everything, Zephyr,” I muttered, sitting on the stone ledge beside the large window, staring into the dying twilight. “All, I have to do is get the damn bond broken and everything...I mean everything will be mine!" I voiced out with every sense of certainty.Zephyr shook his head in what seemed like disbelief.“You are totally out of your damn mind!” he barked, clawing his head in frustration. “No one strikes a deal with Valkyrie and walks out whole! That’s like shaking hands with the goddamn devil. You will lose everything and I mean every single thing!” he growled in a low tone, cautious not to have anyone hear him.A low growl rumbled
LYRA’S POVJake's face twisted in anger as he sprang from his seat, pointing towards Alpha Benson. Veins, lining the side of his forehead. His eyes, once filled with warmth, now brimmed with something heavier; rage, hurt, and betrayal. I could feel it roll off him like a tidal wave. Every person in that hall instinctively held their breath.Hauling Alpha Benson in what seemed like an arm drag, Jake stepped forward slowly, his voice deep and controlled, echoing through the grand hall. “Alpha Benson of the Arrakis Pack,” he began, eyes locked with Alpha Benson. “You were once considered an ally, a partner, and a friend," he growled with a low, yet steady tone. "A father figure in diplomacy. A man I once trusted to walk beside me in strength and wisdom,” he said, holding up his chin.Alpha Benson looked up from where he knelt, sweat pooling on his forehead. He didn't dare speak. Nobody dared intervene at this moment, not even me.“But instead,” Jake continued, squeezing hard on Benson's
