After an unsuccessful job hunt, I went home and found my mother, Lilian Edmond, waiting for me at the front door. "Carolina, you are 26 years old, yet you have no job or boyfriend. You cannot continue to eat in this house with us. Take your things and go back!" my mother yelled, standing by the doorway. "Good evening, Mom," I greeted her, looking at her face. She was 48, average height, with fair skin, long blonde hair, and a curvaceous body. She wore a blue dress paired with black slippers. I wore a faded yellow top, an old brown frayed skirt, and a pair of black shoes. My old, worn-out black bag hung from my right shoulder as I gazed at her. "Carolina, you are not entering this house tonight. You better go back and look for a job. If you do not find one, then do not come home again. If your father and I had known that sending you to university was a waste, we wouldn't have wasted our money—we could have saved it for your younger siblings. How do you expect us to continue feeding a grown woman like you in this house? If you do not want to work, then remain outside!" My mother went back into the apartment and slammed the door in my face. Sighing, I stood inside the compound, speechless. I felt the gazes of some neighbors on me. Where did Mom want me to go? I had hunted for a job, yet no luck. It was 7 p.m. on Friday evening. I turned and walked out of the yard. Three years ago, I had graduated with a first-class degree in business management. But so far, I haven't been able to secure a job. The city was hard, and finding a great job as a graduate had been unsuccessful. My parents had five children, and I am the eldest sibling, with two younger sisters and two younger brothers. I am a 26-year-old woman, fair-skinned, tall, slender, and yet I have nothing serious going on in my life. I sauntered back to the road, knowing that my mother shoulders most of our family responsibilities. My father worked as a car engineer, but he didn't contribute much. He came home to eat, and we might not see him for days. As I stood by the roadside, I peered at the busy road, thinking of what to do next. My watch showed 8 p.m. There was no agency or shop where I hadn't applied for a job. I closed my blue eyes, opened them, and reached for my phone in my black bag to contact my best friend, Lucy Campbell. Lucy works in a clubhouse, and I am sure she can help me get money to cover my bills for this weekend. "Hello, Lucy," I said once she picked up. "Carolina, what's wrong?" Lucy asked me with a soft voice, and I noticed she was at work. The sound of music echoing in the background filled my ears. "I am homeless, Lucy. Can I come and stay at your place?" I asked her, knowing she lived alone. Lucy and I attended the same college, although she didn't further her education. We remained friends to this day. "Why? What happened with your family again? Your mom threw you out? It's 8 p.m. How can she send you away at night?" Lucy asked, subtly annoyed, and I tried not to sob. "Lucy, I cannot blame my mother. The economic situation is too hard now, and Mom is trying her best. I need to get a job. If I can find any job for tonight, I do not mind doing it," I replied, sobbing at last. "It's alright, Carolina. Actually, I am at work now at the Blues Clubhouse. Can you come over to the club? It's the biggest club in this city. I will try to speak to my boss to employ you, but you must quit speaking locally and speak like a professional, like me. That way, my boss can employ you and take you seriously. You must also be friendly with the male clients. You will have to endure their touch and how they interact with you," Lucy said. "Really? I must do all this if I want to get the job? Will it involve kissing or what?" I asked her, my heart pounding. "No, Carolina. What's wrong with you? You will just have to put on a smiling face. Well, you know you're a pretty woman, so some men might want to ask you out on a date," Lucy said with a soft voice, and I thought about it. "Alright. I don't have any problem with that. What matters is that I earn money to foot my bills, even if it means selling my body. I feel like a failure right now," I cried to my best friend over the phone, and she sighed. "It's okay, Carolina. You are not a failure. Where are you? Start coming over now. Do you have your transport fare, or should I lend you some money? You know I don't have much money now to give you. My elder sister's wedding is next month, and I need to make preparations for it," Lucy said. "Alright. I'll pay you back. Please help me, Lucy. You are the only best friend I have," I replied, and she laughed over the phone with her contagious laughter. "Don't mention that, Carolina. I'm sure I'm not your only friend. Anyway, I'll send the money to you. Get here quickly," Lucy gave me an ultimatum before our call ended. She knew how I had been trying to get a job to no avail. I sighed, pacing about the road, and I got a message alert of 5,000, and I smiled. The money was more than I needed, but I knew I had to pay Lucy back. Looking ahead at the busy road, I hailed a taxi and told the driver, "To The Blues Club." The taxi driver looked at me from head to toe as he sat in his driver's seat. "Are you sure you're going to The Blues Club dressed like this?" he asked me suspiciously, and I frowned. "Why? I'm going there to meet a friend of mine," I replied, and he shrugged. "Get into the car. That's not my problem, but your bill is 1,500," the taxi driver said as I pulled the back door and entered the back passenger seat. "Why? Isn't it 500?" I asked him, and his eyes narrowed at me. "You can walk. Why get in a taxi?" he said coldly, and I frowned and fastened my seat belt. "It's fine. Take me to the club," I told him, and he nodded, ignited the car, and drove off to the club.(Nini's POV)"What? How is my son, Raymond, the father of your child, Nini? Are you lying to us? You don't have to tell a lie," Mrs. Eden asked, her eyes watching me curiously, begging me to tell her the truth."I'm not lying, Ma. Raymond and I had sex. He told me about Bright's infertility and said he could make me pregnant. I thought it was all a lie until the test results came back positive," I said, tears streaming down my cheeks. However, Mrs. Eden marched up to me and smacked me hard across my left cheek."Shut up, you slụt! My son is not the father of your child!" she yelled, her eyes shooting daggers at me. I looked at her in shock, my left hand instinctively flying to cover my cheek—I hadn't expected the slap."That's enough, honey. You don't need to raise your hand to her," Mr. Morgan said calmly, even though his wife was seething with rage. But she yelled, "Get out of our house, you Jezebel! So it was your plan to cause a division between my two sons. Even though Bright isn
(Nini's POV)After I left Bright's office, I made my way to the first floor and left the company. Most of the staff looked at me as if I didn't belong there, as if I should quit my job.I knew that I owed Bright an explanation as to why I had broken up with him. Pregnancy wasn't something to be kept hidden, and I knew that Bright would soon find out that I was pregnant with his brother's child.I had thought Bright would react angrily and maybe hit me or throw me out, but he said he already knew that I had cheated. He said he wasn't angry with me and that I should call Raymond and let him know the pregnancy was his. Bright also advised me to inform his parents. My parents had been calling me nonstop, especially my dad and my older brother. They wanted me to come home, and they wanted to force me to apologize to Bright and get back together with him. But Bright made it clear to my face that he didn't want me again. He said that I should move on, and that he had already moved on too.I
(Bright's POV)I had not expected to run into that woman again in my company. The intimate moments we had shared came flooding back in my mind.I was trying to forget about the time we spent together, and now she was working for me as my new accountant. "Damn it!" I cursed and made my way into my office on the top floor of the five-story building. As I paced about in my office, I considered whether I should accept Jeff's offer to transfer her to his company, even though he was younger than me.I shook my head and decided against it."No. Let me see what she is capable of. After all, she is not pursuing me, and she didn't look at me in a way that suggests she wants me again. She clearly understood that it was a one-night stand."As I settled in my office chair, trying to calm my nerves, my office line rang. My secretary, Rita, informed me, "Sir, Mr. Ford is requesting to see you.""Let him in," I replied, before ending the call.A few minutes later, Jeff walked into my office with a s
(Bright's POV) "What? How sure are you that the pregnancy belongs to Raymond? Haha, just cut the joke, Nini. I don’t like jokes, and you know it," I said, laughing sadly and wondering if Nini was playing a trick on me. "I’m not joking, Bright. Raymond invited me over some months ago after you and I stopped having sex. I’m sure he’s the one, but he doesn’t love me. I don’t know how to tell him, and I didn’t want to lie to you about my pregnancy. It’s why I broke up with you. But I still love you, Bright. Please..." Nini stepped forward, reaching for my hands. Just then, Richard entered my office and lowered his head. "Sir, I brought your request," he said, glancing from me to Nini. "It’s fine, Richard. Bring it in," I replied, not sending Richard away despite Nini’s presence. I was shocked by Nini’s confession about why she broke up with me. Sunny and Gideon had already told me that Nini had been cheating, so I was prepared for the worst. It was why I wanted to move on and let her b
(Carolina's POV) "Carolina, I know that you can fool Mom and Dad, but you cannot fool me. Why do you seem so uncomfortable when Dad was speaking about the Morgan Group's CEO, and why are your cheeks so flushed?" Violet asked me once I stepped into the room to sleep for the night. "Violet, I do not
(Carolina's POV) "Sister, do you see that black Jeep that's parked outside our house? Wow!" My younger sister, Violet, asked as she walked into the kitchen to meet me and Mom. However, Mom and I remained silent, as we didn't gush over the Jeep that Violet was admiring. "Good evening, Mom. Sister,
(Carolina's POV) "Carolina, open this door! Who is that young woman, and what is she talking about?" My mother pounded on the door of my room, which I shared with my sisters. I knew that I had made a mistake by sleeping with Bright for money, but how would I have known that his ex-fiancée would hau
(Carolina's POV) When I rose to leave my new office, I paused at the door and glanced back once more. "It felt good to be a new accountant and finally have a job," I said. A smile crept up on my lips, and my heart fluttered with a wave of excitement as I exited my office on the second floor. I ma
