Isadoras breath caught somewhere between her chest and her throat.

What promise, Aunt Katie?she asked again, her voice barely above a whisper.

Promise me you will never tell anyone I was the one who told you.

Your parents especially.Aunt Katies fingers tightened around Isadoras wrist, quick and urgent, like she was afraid the words might slip away before she finished them. They cannot know it came from me. Not your father. Not your mother. No one, Isadora. Do you understand what I am asking you?

I do not understand any of this.Isadora pulled her arm back, just slightly, testing whether her aunt would let go. She did not. You are asking me to keep a secret about a secret I do not even have yet.

That is exactly what I am asking.Her aunts eyes moved once toward the crowd, fast, checking, then came back to settle on her face. Promise me.

Around them, the conference hall buzzed with laughter, clinking glasses, and distant applause, yet none of it reached the small, frozen space where they stood.

I ....... I promise. The words left her mouth before she had fully decided to say them, but once they were out, she did not take them back.

Her aunt exhaled like she had been holding that breath for years, not seconds. She glanced toward the crowd again, then leaned in close enough that Isadora could smell her perfume, sharp and floral, the same one she had worn to every family dinner since Isadora was a child.

Were my parents invited tonight?Isadora asked, before her aunt could speak again. Are they here?

Something flickered across her aunts face, there and gone. I do not know if they came. But they are supposed to be here.Her jaw tightened. The Fenwicks have always been partners with the Ossorios, Isadora. Long before your marriage. Long before you were born, if I am honest with you.

Isadoras stomach dropped, a slow, sick fall, like missing a stair in the dark. Partners, how?

That is not mine to .........

Isadora!

The voice cut through before her aunt could finish, bright and warm and entirely unfamiliar, and Isadora turned toward it with her pulse already climbing before she even understood why.

Rosalind stood a few feet away in dark green silk, a glass of champagne loose in one hand, and the smile on her face reached all the way to her eyes in a way that felt rehearsed and genuine at the same time, which was somehow worse than either alone.

Mrs Katie.Rosalinds gaze slid to her aunt first, and something crossed her face, brief and searching, like she was trying to place a name she almost remembered. It is good to see you again.

Her aunts smile went thin and careful as if she knew Rosalind from somewhere. Rosalind.

But Rosalind was already looking past her, back to Isadora, her whole face brightening the way a room brightens when someone finally finds the person they came looking for.

Oh, you are the one I saw in Rafaels office.Rosalinds head tilted, studying her the way Isadora imagined she studied paintings for a living, cataloguing, assessing, filing away. It is nice meeting you again here. I have heard a lot of stuff about you.

Isadora felt her own face arrange itself into something polite before her brain had caught up to choosing it. Oh, I am sure it is good stuff.Her voice came out steadier than she felt, which surprised her almost as much as the woman standing in front of her. Nice meeting you too, again.

Rosalind laughed, soft and easy, like they were already friends sharing something small. Up close, the resemblance was worse. Not similar. Not close. The same slope of the nose, the same small crease that appeared at the corner of the mouth when the smile was not quite finished forming. Isadoras hand found the stem of her champagne glass and gripped it harder than the moment required.

I should let you two catch up,Rosalind said, her eyes flicking once more toward Aunt Katie, curious, unfinished, before she turned and moved back into the crowd beside Rafael and few of the Ossorios partners, the green of her dress disappearing between shoulders and raised glasses like water closing over a stone.

For a long moment,Isadora remained where she was, watching the space Rosalind had just left behind. She stood very still, watching the space where Rosalind had been, waiting for her own heartbeat to slow down to something normal.

I do not know what is going on.The words came out low, almost to herself. She turned to her aunt, and something in her chest cracked open, thin and quiet. Why does everyone seem to know her? Like Everyone. And she—Isadora stopped, pressed her lips together, tried again. She almost looks like me, Auntie.

Her aunts hand came up to cup her cheek, the same gesture from years of skinned knees and broken hearts, but her eyes stayed fixed somewhere past Isadoras shoulder, distant and unreadable.

I will see you tonight,Isadora said, before her aunt could answer, before either of them had to sit inside that silence any longer. And yes. I promise to keep it a secret.

Her aunt only nodded once.

A few moments later,Isadora turned away before she could see whatever expression was forming beneath it.

Near the back of the conference hall,she slipped into an empty seat as the lights dimmed, grateful for a reason to sit still and let her face stop performing. A board member she did not recognize took the podium, talking about growth projections and market share, and Isadora let the words blur into a low hum she did not have to process, her mind circling instead around a green dress and a comment posted four years ago and the exact careful way her aunt had greeted Rosalind. All flickering through her mind.

Minutes later,a hand settled gently on her shoulder.

She startled, turning to find Marco crouched slightly beside her chair, his face arranged into something professionally neutral that did not quite reach his eyes.

Mrs Isadora.He kept his voice low, barely above the hum of the speech. Mr Rafael wants to see you.

Her stomach tightened, a reflex she did not have time to examine. Now?

Now.

Away from the audience, she rose with as much composure as she could gather, murmuring an apology to no one in particular as she followed Marco toward a quiet corner near the far wall, beyond the podium lights and away from the curious eyes that always seemed to find her.

What is this about?she asked, once they had cleared the worst of the crowd. Her arms folded across her chest without her permission, a wall she had not decided to build. Marco, you called me here saying there were things I needed to see. What things?

Marco opened his mouth.

Isadora.

The voice came from behind her, low and certain, and she turned to find Rafael standing there alone.

No Rosalind beside him. No board member trailing at his shoulder. Just Rafael, his jaw set, his eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made the noise of the ballroom fall away into something distant and unimportant.

He had never once, in three years of marriage, looked at her exactly like that.

Isadoras chest tightened, something between hope and love rising so fast she could not separate the two. Rafael.Her voice cracked slightly on his name, and she hated it, hated how much of herself the sound gave away. What is going on?

Why did you call me out here?

He did not answer.

He only held her gaze, something unreadable shifting behind his eyes.

Standing in that quiet corner, with the conference hall carrying on as though nothing had changed,Isadora understood something with terrifying certainty.

Whatever came next…

She was not ready for it.

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 27: Jealousy at the auction.

ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 26: The secret contract.

ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 25: The Hidden threat.

ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 24: The Ring's Vow.

ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 23: Betrayal in Segovia.

ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but

  • Back for him, Not for me.   Chapter 22: The wild night.

ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
