LOGINIsadora's Pov
If I stayed on this cold floor for another ten seconds, the poison gas would end my life before my father's guards even reached the room.
I coughed heavily as the air vents above my head reversed their flow and cleared the thick haze from the study.
I forced my eyes open, struggling to drag my body across the carpet toward the fallen binder.
Then suddenly a key turned in the lock, and the door swung open to reveal Rafael standing in the doorway instead of Peter’s armed security team.
"Isa, get up right now if you want to live," Rafael said, throwing his heavy coat around my shoulders and pulling my arm over his neck.
"I am not leaving those adoption files behind on the floor," I said to him, pointing my finger back toward the open desk drawer.
"We do not have time for papers," Rafael said, hauling me toward the back of the library before I could crawl toward the files.
I made the hard choice to stop fighting him because my legs were too weak to even stand on their own.
Then he pushed open a hidden servant door in the wall that led directly out to the rear driveway of the estate.
Then he pulled me through the narrow opening just as heavy footsteps echoed down the main hall behind us.
I looked back through the open doorway, realizing that I was leaving the only proof of my real identity behind in that room.
Then, I felt a surge of regret, but I kept moving because I chose survival over immediate answers.
We reached his car in the dark alley, and he threw open the passenger door.
"Get inside and stay down," Rafael said, shoving my shoulders down into the leather seat and pulling the belt across my chest.
He ran around to the driver side, inserted the key, and sped down the gravel driveway into the night.
I leaned back against the headrest, taking long breaths to get the chemical taste out of my mouth as the speedometer of his car even climbed higher.
I looked out the side window and saw that we were moving fast toward the western highway, completely away from the city center.
I thought about how easily he had unlocked that private door, and my doubt about his motives grew stronger with every mile.
Then, I decided to confront him directly, refusing to play the helpless victim while he drove me deeper into the dark.
"You knew exactly how to open that rear door," I said, leaning over the center console to look at his face.
"I tracked your phone after you left the gala, and I stole a staff key from the front gate," Rafael answered, keeping his eyes fixed on the empty road.
"You showed up at the exact second the locks opened, and I do not believe in convenient timing," I shouted, reaching over to snatch his hand off the wheel.
He pulled his arm back quickly, holding the steering wheel tight while I unbuckled my seatbelt to face him.
"Keep your seatbelt on before you kill us both," Rafael said, hitting the brakes and pulling the car onto the dirt shoulder.
"Tell me what you are doing here," I demanded, grabbing his jacket sleeve so he could not look away.
"You think I am helping Peter, but you have no idea who is actually trying to erase you," Rafael said, turning his body toward me in the dim light.
"My father trapped me in that room to protect his own name," I argued, pressing my palm against the dashboard to steady myself.
"Peter is just taking orders from Everett Ossorio, and you walked right into their setup," Rafael said, shaking his head with anger.
"Everett Ossorio does not care about my father's money or my sister," I said, feeling my heart boil in anger as his words sank in.
"Everett is the man who signed your real adoption papers, and he is trying to wipe out your existence to cover his own tracks," Rafael explained, reaching out to grip my arms gently.
I looked at his hands on my arms, torn between trusting the man who pulled me out of the estate and running into the dark trees alone.
Immediately I pulled away from his grip, knowing that trust was a luxury I could not afford tonight.
"Take me back to Segovia so I can grab those documents myself," I said, reaching for the door handle.
"Look Isa, If you go back there tonight, you will disappear into a cell, and I will not be able to save you again," Rafael warned, pushing the central lock button to keep the doors shut.
"You have no right to keep me locked inside this car," I said, glaring at the door panel.
"I am taking you to a private safehouse where neither Peter nor Everett can find you," Rafael said, putting the car back into gear and driving onto the pavement.
Then, we rode in absolute silence for forty minutes until he turned onto a narrow dirt road surrounded by tall trees.
He stopped the car in front of a small, concrete building tucked completely away from the main road.
I stepped out onto the gravel, looking carefully in every direction to see if any secondary cars had followed our path but I noticed none.
"Nobody knows this building exists," Rafael said, walking up the short steps to unlock the entrance.
I followed him up the concrete steps, keeping my hands inside my jacket pockets as my mind weighed every risk ahead.
Then he unlocked the thick front door and stepped to the side so I could enter the hall first.
I walked into the dark living room, standing in the middle of the space while he walked over to the kitchen counter.
"I am going out onto the balcony to check the safety before we settle in," Rafael said, leaving his secondary mobile phone sitting right next to a glass of water.
"Go check it," I replied, watching his back as he stepped through the glass doors.
I walked over to the kitchen counter, reaching for the water glass to soothe my burning throat.
But before my fingers touched the glass, the screen on his secondary phone lit up with a bright incoming notification.
I looked down at the display, noticing the caller name displayed as Peter Fenwick.
A text message appeared across the middle of the screen, and the words made my stomach drop into a pit of cold terror.
"She is secured at the safehouse as agreed. Wire the remaining balance now," The Message Read.
I stood there in complete shock, realizing that the man who rescued me had actually sold me to my father, and the front door lock clicked behind me as two guards stepped into the room.
ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
