FAZER LOGINIsadora's Pov
If Peter Fenwick discovered that I had left the gala, he would ruin my life.
I stared down at the keys in my hand and knew that I had to betray him.I evaded the valet, walked three blocks in my evening dress, and finally reached my mother's old coupe.
I inserted the key into the ignition and prepared to drive away from my old life forever.
The road ahead of me was dark, but my thoughts were even darker. I knew that by leaving tonight, I could never return to the person I used to be.
I decided to go because I did not want to spend another day in the clutches of his lies.
My heart pounded so hard in my chest, but I kept my eyes on the road as I was well aware of the risks involved in defying him, but I refused to turn back.
Rosalind had suffered in silence for five years, and I had decided that it was time for someone to put an end to it. I pulled up in front of the Segovia estate at and check the time, it was already 12am in the morning and turned off the engine so that the night security guards would not hear the sound of the motor. I sat in the car for a moment, contemplating on my next move.
Then I got out to finish what I had started. I walked up to the iron gate, opened it with the code I had stolen from my father's office and I pushed it open with my shoulder walking into the shadows.
I made my way toward the side door, trying to ignore the feeling of dread in my stomach.
"I am doing this for Rosalind,"I whispered to myself, reaching for the doorknob.I slowly turned the brass knob and opened the door as I walked down the hallway toward my father's study. I passed a few rooms on either side, but I did not stop because I knew where he kept his private files.
I walked behind his large wooden desk and searched the middle drawer with my fingers and I found a small button.
I pressed it, as the hidden door behind the desk slid open and I saw the steel safe which was behind the false panel, just as I had hoped.
I opened the safe with the four-digit code of Rosalind's birthday, hoping that he had not changed it and I slowly reached into the safe and pulled out a thick file of papers.
"You thought you could hide this forever,"I said to myself, opening the file.
Then I noticed the first paper was an altered medical bill from a private hospital.
I read the numbers again and realized that Peter had given Rosalind three times the dose of medicine he prescribed.
He had falsified her medical records to make it seem like she was insane.
My stomach turned at the thought, but I continued looking through the file.
The next paper I saw, was a legal document transferring all of Rosalind's money to Peter.
Her signature at the bottom of the page was smudged, unlike her usual elegant script. That was when I knew that he had taken advantage of her vulnerable state and forced her to sign the papers.
"He ruined her,"I whispered, clutching the paper to my chest.
I reached into the safe one more time and pulled out a small envelope from the far end and there was only one paper inside with the word ADOPTION printed on the top.
My name was written at the bottom of the page, but the names of my real parents were covered in thick black ink.
I stood in stunned silence, trying to absorb the meaning of what I was seeing.
I was not really his daughter?
I had spent my entire life trying to make a man feel proud of me, even though he had bought me from my real parents.
Immediately I felt a surge of anger rise in my chest, but I pushed it down as I knew that I would use this information to destroy his life.
Then, suddenly before I knew it, an alarm sounded from the wall above my head.
I dropped the file on the desk as the red light flashed over the doorway any heavy metal plates blocked the view of the night sky from the windows.
I ran to the front door, but it was already locked from the outside.
"Did you think I would not notice you leaving the gala, Isadora?"Peter's voice came from the intercom on the wall.
"I came to find the truth,"I said, gripping my hands into a fist.
"Well, daughter, you just walked right into a trap,"Peter said coldly. "Open this door and let me go,"I demanded, kicking the door with my heel."You chose to pry into things that do not concern you,"Peter said.
"Rosalind is my sister, and this belongs to me,"I shouted at him.
"She is not your sister, and you are not my daughter,"Peter said.I heard the heavy deadbolts slide into place on the other side of the door, locking me in and I stepped back in fear from the front door, realizing that he had used his phone to lock me in the house.
"You cannot keep me in here,"I said, trying to sound calm. "I do not plan to keep you in there for long,"Peter said after a moment."I am only keeping you there until the police come to lock you up for breaking and entering,"he said.
The intercom was silent as he spoke, and I turned back to the desk as I picked up the adoption paper and tucked it into my evening dress. If I was going to jail tonight, I was going to make sure that his secrets went with me.
I looked around the room, searching for another way out and suddenly, my eyes were drawn to a heavy metal statue on the table across the room.
I walked over to it and picked it up with both hands, deciding to use it to break the metal plates over the windows.
As I turned around, a small noise came from the air vent above my head and thick white smoke began to pour out of the small opening, filling the room.I coughed violently, and the heavy statue slipped from my hands and hit the floor.
My knees buckled underneath me, and I landed on my hands and knees. I struggled to breathe, feeling lightheaded and dizzy.I crawled toward the desk, trying to reach the rest of Rosalind's papers as my fingers brushed against the edge of the folder, but my arm gave out, and I collapsed on my side.
My eyes were growing heavy, but I forced myself to look up just in time to see the shadow of a man's feet stop outside the door.
The next thing I heard was the sound of a key turning in the lock.ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
