Before the doctors could say more, the elevator softly dinged and the doors opened onto the top floor: a private, silent wing. I walked right out. I would deal with their vague, unsettling observation later. Evelyn couldn't wait.

They scrambled ahead, leading me toward a large, private suite. The heavy, dark wood door slid open silently. I stepped inside, my eyes scanning the luxurious space. It looked more like a hotel room than a hospital room.

"She’s in the connecting room, sir," Dr. Peterson murmured, pointing to another door.

I went to it, and as I got closer, I heard a sound. Low, frantic whispers. I pushed the door open without knocking.

The room was dimly lit, focused on Evelyn lying completely still in the bed. But surrounding the bed were three women; they were her personal assistants. I recognized them.
