Kaelia's POV

The smell of his perfume was a sharp contrast to whatever cheap stuff Landon was wearing.

My blood roared in my ears at the realization of what was happening.

Freddy was standing just behind me.

He had not seen my face yet, because I was standing with my back to him, listening to the sound of his voice.

“Good day, Landon.”

“I didn't expect to see you here this evening. Is everything alright?”

“Yes. I'm just checking on operations.”

I didn't need to be told that it was strange the way I stood, my back to the CEO of my workplace - even Landon gave me a weird look - but I didn't care.

I was not going to risk turning for anything.

“Checking on operations. You know how it is.” He said. He sounded harsh and irritated, different from the Freddy I knew at home.

“Anything I should know about?” Freddy asked.

Landon's eyes darted to me briefly. “Just, uh, handling some guest issues. I should check on one in the east wing right now. Excuse me.”

As Landon turned and walked away, I f

Kaelia's POVWe were still sitting in the garden, wrapped in each other's arms and dreams of the future, when Freddy's phone rang.He tensed immediately, and I felt it. The way his body went from relaxed to alert in an instant."I should take this," he said, pulling the phone from his pocket and glancing at the screen. His jaw tightened. "It's the commissioner."My stomach dropped. Nothing good ever came from late-night calls from the police.Freddy answered, his voice professional. "Commissioner."I watched his face as he listened, trying to read his expression in the moonlight. His free hand was still around me, but I felt him grip me a little tighter."When did this happen?" he asked, his tone sharp.More listening. His eyebrows drew together."And you're certain?" Another pause. "I see. Yes, I understand. Tomorrow morning then. I'll be there."He ended the call and sat there for a moment, staring at his phone like it had personally offended him."What is it?" I asked, pulling back

Chapter 173Kaelia's POV“I've known for long,”Tears pricked my eyes. "Freddy...""I know I haven't always made things easy," he continued. "I know there have been obstacles and complications. But through all of it, the one constant has been how I feel about you. That's never wavered. That's never going to waver.""I feel the same way," I whispered. "You're it for me. It's the only one I want. It's the only one I'll ever want."He tilted my face up and kissed me, deep and passionate, conveying everything words couldn't express. When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing hard."So three kids," he said with a smile. "Any other specifications I should know about?"I laughed, grateful for the lighter turn. "Well, I'd like to space them out a bit. Maybe two or three years between each one? That way, we can give each baby the attention they need, and the older ones can help with the younger ones.""Practical and sweet," Freddy approved. "What about names? Have you thought about t

Kaelia's POV The smile that spread across Freddy's face was brilliant. "How many?""How many what?""How many kids do you want?"I laughed at the directness of the question. "I don't know! I haven't really thought about a specific number. What about you?"He considered for a moment, his thumbs rubbing gentle circles on the backs of my hands. "I always thought three would be nice. Not too few, not too many. Enough for them to always have playmates and companions, but not so many that we can't give each one individual attention.""Three," I said, imagining it. "That's a good number. Two boys and a girl? Or two girls and a boy?""I don't care about the gender," Freddy said. "As long as they're healthy and happy. Though if we have daughters, I'm going to be impossibly overprotective.""You're already impossibly overprotective of me," I teased."Exactly. And daughters would be miniature versions of you, which means I'd be constantly fighting off boys who think they're good enough for them

Kaelia's POVThe candlelight flickered softly between us, casting dancing shadows across Freddy's face as he refilled my wine glass. The food had been absolutely divine, but what made the evening truly magical was simply being here with him, away from everything else."What are you thinking about?" Freddy asked, his eyes searching my face.I smiled, taking a sip of wine. "Just how perfect this is. How perfect you are for doing all of this.""You deserve perfect," he said simply, reaching across the table to take my hand. His thumb traced circles on my palm, sending little shivers up my arm. "You deserve everything good in this world, Kaelia. I want to give you all of it."My cheeks warmed at his words. Even after everything we'd been through, he still had the ability to make me feel like a schoolgirl with her first crush."You already give me so much," I said softly. "More than I ever thought I'd have.""That's not enough," he insisted. "I want to give you the world. I want to give y

Freddy's Pov "Of course," the commissioner agreed.I looked at Marco one more time. He was watching me with a mixture of hope and apprehension, his hands still clasped tightly in his lap."I hope you're telling the truth," I said quietly. "Because that little boy has been through enough trauma for a lifetime. He doesn't need any more.""I am telling the truth," Marco insisted. "I swear it on my sister's grave."I nodded and left the office without another word. The drive back to the villa was long, giving me too much time to think. Too much time to doubt.Everything Marco had said made sense. The story was consistent, the emotion seemed genuine, and the documentation appeared legitimate. By all accounts, he was exactly who he claimed to be.So why did I feel so uneasy?Maybe it was just my protective instincts kicking in. Maybe I was looking for reasons to doubt him because I didn't want to believe that Birdie would be leaving us. That Kaelia would have to say goodbye.Or maybe my in

Freddy's POVI stood in the commissioner's office an hour later, my jaw tight as I waited for him to bring in this supposed uncle. The drive into the city had been tense. My mind kept replaying Lucia's account of the attack, kept seeing the fear in Kaelia's eyes when she'd walked through that door. Someone had tried to hurt them. Someone had come at them with a knife in broad daylight. And now, conveniently, a family member appeared. The timing was too perfect. Too suspicious."Mr Montgomery," the commissioner said, entering the office with a folder tucked under his arm. "Thank you for coming on such short notice.""Of course," I replied, keeping my voice neutral. "Where is he?""I'll bring him in momentarily. I wanted to brief you first." He opened the folder, spreading several documents across his desk. "Marco Rossi. Thirty-eight years old. Works as a mechanic in Montepulciano. He provided these family photographs, birth certificates for both himself and his sister Elena, and docu
