Chapter 1

At the pack dinner party, I asked for a washing machine, only to get tea dumped on me by Peyton Bell, a she-wolf who claimed to be the daughter of my uncle, Nigel Taylor.

When I stayed silent, Peyton thought I was scared and became even more arrogant.

"What, scared now? If you hadn't used that face of yours to seduce Mr. White, he never would've made you a Beta. You're a cancer ruining the pack's reputation. Letting you stay here is a disgrace to the entire pack!"

I seduced the Alpha, Matt White, with my looks?

Everyone here knew I had been pulling 3 a.m. nights revising proposals, spending only three or four days a month at home, and the rest of the time traveling between different packs to negotiate partnerships.

All that hard work, and now I was being accused of climbing the ranks with my looks?

I turned around and looked straight at Peyton.

"Watch your tongue. I earned my position as Beta with my own ability, and everyone here knows that. Who are you to erase all my achievements with a single sentence?

"And what you just said didn't just insult me. You were also implying that Mr. White is the kind of ruler who only cares about looks and plays favorites. If he found out you talk about him like that behind his back, what do you think he'd feel?"

Peyton had only wanted to mock me, but she hadn't expected me to catch the loophole in her words and turn it back on her. Her face went pale with anger.

Seeing how furious she looked, several members couldn't help but lower their heads and laugh quietly.

Ever since Peyton joined the pack, she had offended almost everyone with her bossy attitude.

Once, she put a bouquet of bright red flowers on her desk. Tina Warren, who was allergic to pollen, politely asked her to move them, but Peyton threw the entire bouquet straight at Tina.

"I like the smell of pollen. This office doesn't belong to you alone. Either you apply to change offices yourself, or get the hell out of the pack!"

Tina ended up in the hospital because of her pollen allergy, and the pack even had to cover her medical bills.

I had been furious back then and wanted to confront Peyton, but some members stopped me.

They all disliked Peyton, too, but they chose to stay silent.

As it turned out, Peyton had been suppressing them by claiming she was the Alpha King's daughter. Everyone was afraid of offending her, so no matter how outrageous her behavior was, they only dared to be angry in private.

When the suppressed laughter reached Peyton's ears, she completely lost it.

She pointed at my nose and shouted, "Eunice, who do you think you are? Watch your back! I'll tell my dad and have him kick you out of the werewolf society. You're not writing anything today because I say so. If you dare go against me today, I'll make sure you're gone tomorrow!"

I wasn't afraid of her threats at all. I grabbed the list and wrote down the words "washing machine."

I had secured so many partnerships for the pack. What was wrong with asking for one washing machine?

"What are all of you crowding around for?"

Matt pushed the door open and walked in. When he saw the scene in front of him, his expression darkened.

"Today is the pack's 67th anniversary. Why are you all arguing on such a meaningful day?"

Before I could say anything, Peyton put on a wounded expression and rushed to complain to Matt.

"Mr. White, I just thought you've worked too hard for the pack this year and didn't want you to spend money. But Eunice didn't appreciate it at all and insisted on asking for a washing machine. And she even…even…"

Tears shimmered in Peyton's eyes. "She even hit me!"

Before I could explain, Matt's face immediately stiffened. He looked at me seriously.

"Eunice, you've been my Beta for five years now. How are you still not even half as sensible as Peyton? She's always trying to reduce my financial burden, while you insist on doing whatever you want.

"And hitting someone is just wrong. Apologize to Peyton right now and pay her two grand for emotional damages. After that, we'll consider this matter settled."

I almost laughed out of sheer anger. He remembered that I had been his Beta for five years, yet in his eyes, my credibility was worth less than that of a brand-new intern's.

"Mr. White, are you really asking me to compensate Peyton?"

Matt's expression clearly turned displeased.

At that moment, Tina tugged gently on my sleeve and whispered, "Peyton is the Alpha King's daughter. If she goes back and tattles, you might really get kicked out of the pack."

I couldn't help letting out a short laugh. "No. The Alpha King doesn't even have a partner. How could he suddenly have a daughter out of nowhere?"

Tina glanced at Peyton, then leaned close to my ear.

"What if she's an illegitimate child? I heard the Alpha King's private life is a mess. It wouldn't be surprising if he had a couple of kids on the side."
