Chapter 3

Author: Stars
"So this is the ‘ability’ you’re referring to—shirking duties at work, lacking even basic operational skills, mistaking partner Alphas during negotiations, and costing the pack hundreds of thousands in losses?"

Everything I said was true.

Peyton's face turned dark, and she immediately looked at Matt with an innocent expression.

Matt sat back down, frowned, and rubbed his temples.

Finally, he said to me helplessly, "You'll report to the pack's southernmost border region tomorrow. Peyton will temporarily take over the Beta position. When you prove yourself again, I'll transfer you back."

The southern branch was the harshest place in the entire pack. The environment was brutal, and because it was close to the borderlands, rogues showed up from time to time. Being sent there was basically the same as exile.

But I didn't argue or get angry. I just let out a sarcastic smile. "Fine. I'll leave tomorrow. This Beta position really should go to someone more suitable."

After the meeting ended and I returned to my desk, I received an official dismissal notice from Matt, assigning me to the border region of the pack. Without his permission, I wasn't allowed to return.

I stared at the cold text on the screen and felt completely numb.

Leaving might not be such a bad thing. At least I wouldn't have to see Peyton's disgusting face anymore.

I packed my bags and left the next day.

The border region of the pack was filled with sand and dust. Anyone sent here had usually committed a serious mistake and been stripped of their position by the Alpha before being dumped in this middle-of-nowhere place.

Here, I not only endured the scornful and pitiful looks of the pack members alongside me, but I also kept receiving mocking photos from Peyton.

In the photos, she smugly propped her legs up on my old desk, striking a victorious pose.

But her provocation didn't make me angry at all, because I knew she wouldn't sit in that position for long.

Peyton was a walking disaster. She spilled coffee on Matt's pants during a meeting, printed the wrong contracts, and even ordered strawberry wine at a reception despite Matt being allergic. Halfway through the event, Matt was rushed to the hospital because of an allergic reaction.

The outcome was obvious. A carefully planned partnership fell apart because of Peyton.

Matt finally couldn't take it anymore and personally called me back.

"Eunice, I've thought it over. You've been my Beta for five years. I shouldn't have fired you over something so small. How about this? If you secure this partnership, I'll reinstate you and double your salary."

Of course, I knew what he was trying to do, so I replied casually, "I don't think I'm qualified to be a Beta anymore. I should stay at the ground level and reflect for a while. When I've realized my mistakes, I'll come back."

Matt paused for a moment, then forced himself to stay patient. "Come on, don't be so rigid. Even if you're not Beta, you're still part of the pack. When the pack's interests are on the line, you can't just ignore it."

I smiled. "What about your outstanding Beta? She's incredibly capable. I'm just someone who gets deals with her looks. How could I possibly compare to Peyton?"

I couldn't see Matt's expression, but from his tone, I knew he was barely holding back his anger.

"It was just a joke between members. You've worked for me for five years. I know what kind of wolf you are."

I remained unmoved, every word dripping with sarcasm. "Docking 40 thousand dollars from my bonus, and sending me to the borderlands count as a joke? Does labeling me as wasteful just because I wanted a washing machine also count as a joke?"

Matt's face shifted from pale to dark, like a living color palette.

He fell silent, clearly thinking about what to say next.

As Alpha, admitting fault to a mere employee would be humiliating.

Just then, Peyton came running over excitedly.

"Mr. White, the Alpha King has agreed to attend our pack's dinner party."

Matt's eyes lit up. "That's great! As long as the other packs see the Alpha King showing up at our dinner party, they'll assume we have his backing. Then they'll be begging to work with us."

He turned back to the phone and said coldly, "You've already been expelled from the pack. Come back immediately to complete the withdrawal procedures."

Peyton added triumphantly, "I'll have the Alpha King issue an order so no pack dares to take you in. Let's see what you do then!"

I smiled faintly. "Alright. We'll wait and see."

Peyton grew more and more desperate."I really think of the Alpha King as my own father! I respect and admire him. I really didn't mean to trick anyone…"I looked at her with disgust. "You've told lies for so long that you've even convinced yourself."Uncle Nigel showed no mercy, either. "If Eunice hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known you were using my name as my daughter while doing all kinds of terrible things. I've always felt guilty toward children like you. If I hadn't been too late back then, you might still have a happy family of your own. All these years, taking care of you was my way of atoning for that guilt."He paused, then his tone hardened."But I never imagined that while giving you a comfortable life, I neglected your moral upbringing. Now, you even bullied my niece. What you've done is really disappointing. I hope you'll think about your mistakes at the wastelands."Peyton collapsed to the ground, her body twitching as she cried uncontrollably."Alpha King, I

The entire venue instantly fell silent. Except for me, everyone present dropped to their knees toward the Alpha King, not daring to lift their heads.Peyton was especially stunned. I couldn't see her expression, but judging from how violently her body was shaking, I could guess well enough.Uncle Nigel ignored the crowd and walked straight up to me, looking me over carefully."Eunice, are you hurt? If anything happened to you, your dad's going to kill me."Just moments ago, I had been standing alone against everyone. Now, the grievance I had been holding back finally broke loose, and my tears poured out uncontrollably.Uncle Nigel immediately understood what had happened. His expression turned icy."Who bullied my niece?"His cold voice echoed across the airfield. Those who had questioned me, mocked me, and even insulted me earlier didn't dare make a sound now. They wished they could bury their heads in the ground."Pull up the surveillance footage. It seems you Alphas have g

I looked at Peyton and said, "You keep saying you're Uncle Nigel's daughter, but he doesn't even have a partner. How would he have a daughter out of nowhere?"The moment I said that, the entire room exploded."Exactly! If the Alpha King really had a child, how could none of us know about it?""Maybe she's an illegitimate child. I've heard the Alpha King's private life is pretty messy. I wouldn't be surprised if he really had children out of wedlock.""Maybe the mother isn't presentable enough. Otherwise, why would he refuse to acknowledge her?"Peyton's face turned deathly pale as she scrambled to defend herself."I-I'm not an illegitimate child! I am my father's daughter. You all know how brutal royal power struggles are. He just wanted to protect me from getting hurt, so he didn't acknowledge me publicly."What she said did sound somewhat reasonable. Even competition for Alpha positions was filled with conflict, sometimes ending with brothers turning against each other or even

The entire venue fell into a deathly silence. Everyone stared back and forth between Peyton and me."She's claiming that the Alpha King is her uncle. That means she and Peyton are cousins. If that's true, how could they not know each other?""One of them has to be lying."Peyton's face turned paper white, and panic flickered across her expression."That's impossible. She's lying! If you really were my cousin, there's no way I wouldn't know! Eunice, don't think you can fool us by hiring a few actors and bringing out a fake badge. You're just bitter that Matt kicked you out, so you're taking the chance to get revenge on us!"As the situation grew more heated, Matt immediately stepped forward to vouch for Peyton."Eunice has to be lying. She worked as a Beta in my pack for five years. If the Alpha King were really her uncle, why would she be willing to work for me? She's obviously angry that I expelled her and is making this up to damage my pack's reputation. Don't let her deceive y

After completing the formalities to leave the pack, I walked away from the pack I had lived in for five years.Even though this wasn’t my hometown, it was the first place where I had truly fought for my footing after coming of age. I had worked myself to the bone to prove to my parents that I wasn't some sheltered kid who survived on family support. I didn't rely on my family or connections, only on myself. In the end, what I got was being expelled from the pack. As I stood in the empty apartment, I felt as if my heart was being cut apart. Some members came out one by one to see me off, offering words of comfort."Eunice, kicking you out is Mr. White's loss. You're so capable. I'm sure another pack will take you in. Don't take Peyton's words to heart."I just gave a faint smile.Peyton wasn't that powerful. At the airport, I received a call from Uncle Nigel, who had been out of contact for two weeks."There's unrest breaking out in a pack, and I have to step in personally.
