Chapter 6

Liam's POV

On the night of the mission, when Mia didn't show up after an hour, I knew something had gone terribly wrong. 

We had planned for the mission to be quick. She should have been out within twenty minutes max. But when I saw that she didn't come to the car after thirty minutes, forty-five minutes, and eventually an hour, I didn't waste time before zooming out of there. 

My heart had been in my throat as I sped off, not wanting to risk Kai or his men finding me. 

I had parked a good distance away from the villa just in case, but there was no telling what could have happened. 

I had no idea what became of Mia—whether she was dead or alive. The only thing that mattered to me was getting out of there without being compromised. 

I remembered getting to my dorm and punching the wall out of anger because of how awful the mission had gone. Mia had been stupid enough to get caught. And I couldn't get my hands on those fingerprints. 

Those damn fingerprints were the key to a better future. If the mission had been a success, I could have gotten some investors and finally start the security firm I had been working towards for all these years. 

But no. Mia had to mess it up. 

What was even the point of sending her there in the first place if she ended up failing?

The only reason I had trusted her to steal the fingerprints was because she had no wolf spirit and was practically invisible to Kai’s defense systems. 

I knew she was going to do it for me because of how much she loved me, but it was all useless now. 

I didn't care about whatever became of her in Kai's villa. As long as she didn't reveal I was the one who sent her, I was good. And I had a feeling she wouldn't. 

I went to sleep that night thinking about what I was going to do next and how to go about securing investors for my firm. 

The next morning however, I woke up to the most shocking news ever. 

When I turned on my phone, the first thing I saw were a bunch of texts and missed calls from my friends. 

My eyes narrowed at that, wondering why they were calling me so early in the morning. 

My brows knitted together in confusion when my eyes caught one of the unread messages. 

“Dude! Why aren't you picking your calls? Your girlfriend got engaged!”

“What...?” I muttered, wondering if my eyes were working well or if my brain was still foggy from sleep. 

What the hell was that even supposed to mean? 

Mia had gotten caught last night on the mission. 

How could she have gotten engaged overnight?

Or was he mistaking her for someone who looked like her?

I quickly dialed his number and he picked up on the second ring. 

“Dude, where the hell did you put your phone? I've been calling and texting you for hours!” Nick snapped, and I massaged my temple. 

“I was sleeping. What the hell did you mean by your text?” I asked groggily. 

“Mis got engaged, dude! Woke up to the announcement this morning and the whole pack has been in a frenzy because of who she got engaged to,” Nick said, sounding bewildered. 

“What the hell, Nick? Are you trolling me? There's no way Mia got engaged. I still saw her last night,” I uttered, feeling irritated by the whole thing. 

“Kinda looks like she has been cheating on you with an upgrade, dude,” Nick said with a chuckle. “If you don't believe what I'm saying, open any of your social media apps and see. It's literally trending everywhere.”

I quickly ended the call and opened the first social media app I saw. 

And just like Nick said, the news about Mia's engagement was the first thing I saw. 

I froze in shock as I read the headline and saw the images attached to the news. 

“What the fuck?” I gasped, refusing to believe my eyes. 

I blinked again, but what I had just seen and read was still the same. 

Kai Voss had gotten engaged to Mia?

What in the world?

The first line of the news read: Powerful high-rank wolf and business tycoon Kai Voss chooses a wolfless student Mia Hale from Lycan Academy to be his fiancée. This raises a lot of questions from the citizens of Lycan Pack. 

My phone fell from my hand and I looked around in shock, wondering if I was dreaming. 

Mia had gone to steal from Kai just last night. How the hell was he announcing her as his fiancée this morning? Was I missing something? What the hell was going on?

I replayed the conversation I had with Mia before she went to the villa to make sense of it all. She had agreed to steal the fingerprints quite easily, but I assumed it was because of how much she loved me. 

Could it be Mia had been cheating on me with Kai this whole time and used this as an opportunity to be with him instead?

I shook my head. 

No. That didn't make sense. 

There was no way Mia and Kai's paths could have crossed. They were from two different worlds. It was simply impossible. 

I had not expected things to turn out this way at all. 

I needed to do something about it. 

I paced my room as I tried to think of something, 

I picked up my phone and saw dozens of notifications from the student forum. 

Everybody was talking about the engagement announcement. 

Mia was well-known throughout the school and pack to be the only Lycan without a wolf spirit, so there was no wonder it was such shocking news to people. 

There were also a handful of people posting and tagging me, wondering if I knew about Mia and Kai being together and if she had been dating both of us at the same time. 

I decided to ride the wave and made a post. 

[To everyone who has been messaging me and checking up on me, thanks for caring. I had no idea Mia was dating Kai Voss. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hurt when I woke up to the news this morning, and I've not been myself. But I understand Mia. She must have hated being with a bum like me who couldn't even start a security firm and decided to be with an established high ranking wolf instead. Please respect my privacy during this time as I try to recover from this news. Thank you.]

After pressing the post button, I turned off my phone and put it aside. 

A smirk crept onto my face as I thought of what was coming next. 

The post was sure to get people on my side.
