LOGINLyra's POV
His tongue was clearly forked, and pierced. And it kept swiping at the bottom of his lip. It was incredibly distracting for an eerie reason. What was so mysterious about the kind of music he listened to? "What are you all of a sudden?" I didn't know the answer to that myself. "Um, whatever. As long as it's not satanic or I don't know... something that will possess my daughter and I if we accidentally hear it." He smiled. "But music is meant to possess one's entire being. That's the whole point of the melody." He actually smiled. Not a grin. Not a... wolfish predatory smirk. But it was gone as soon as it came. "Hard pass. I'll rather listen to my own kind of music, thank you." He shrugged. "Suit yourself, I'll be settling in. My trip here was quite long." ______ We reached the west wing doorway. “Well,” he said, surveying the space. “Not bad. Bigger than my dorm back on my former campus.” “You are in college,” I said flatly. Reminding myself of the fact. “Graduate student,” he corrected. “Art and design, and welp, athlete on scholarship.” Of course he was. “Let me guess,” I said. “Basketball.” He looked offended. “Track.” "Really?” “Really.” I glanced at his long legs, the easy balance in his stance. He could be a quarterback, boxer or basketball whatever it was, easily I turned toward the door. “I am going back to check on Eleanor. You should unpack.” “Yes, ma’am.” I paused. “Do not call me that. I'm not that old.” “Copy that, landlord.” ______ I stood in the kitchen longer than necessary.. I pinched one mint leaf between my fingers, tore it gently, inhaled and placed it back down. The pasta water bubbled softly on the stove. Broccoli steamed in a neat little bowl, already seasoned. I had enough for three people. I was not obligated to make lunch for my tenant. He paid rent. That was it. End of transaction. And yet, here I was, standing in my kitchen, contemplating if I should bring out two bowls or three. I sighed, washed my hands, and dried them with the towel on the countertop. Fine. In the spirit of being a decent human being, I would include him in the plan for lunch. I climbed the stairs to the west wing, mentally rehearsing a neutral sentence. Lunch will be ready in fifteen minutes. That was straight to the point and civil enough. I reached his door, and it wasn't locked. He was walking around with his smartphone placed to his ear. And it looked flamboyantly costly. Ofcourse, he was a Rourke after all. "...Father put you up to this, didn't he?" ".... I am settling in fine. Yeah." I let my hand fall from the handle and eavesdropped without meaning to. “....No, the transfer went smoother than I thought.” I couldn't hear the voice on the other end. “....Yeah. Yeah, that tracks.” I leaned slightly closer to the door when he flopped back on the bed. A towel hung low around his waist, knotted loosely, damp at the edges. His hair was wet, darker than before, and droplets of water trickled down his back. I knew he had a fit physique, but now that he had taken off his clothes... I should not have been looking. I knew that. I absolutely, one hundred percent knew that. And yet my eyes stayed exactly where they were, cataloging details I had no business registering. The slope of his shoulders. The way his back narrowed toward his waist in a tight V-line. Like an arrow pointing to the front of what his towel shielded. Lyra, stop. He turned slightly, adjusting the towel, and I looked away a second too late. Heat crept up my neck. This was mortifying. I was a mother. A responsible adult with morals and trust issues. Get it together. “…yeah,” Luca said again. “Hold on. Let us switch to FaceTime. This line is acting up. I have to tell you about something crazy that happened today.” He flopped back onto the bed, and angled the camera. I was clearly looking at the screen now. It had the 'connecting' icon on it. I waited patiently to see who was on the other end, out of curiosity. Until a pair of slate blue eyes and a chin lined with hair filled the screen. The world narrowed to a single, breathless point. My hand pressed harder against the door than I intended, and I fell, accidentally pushing it open. I stumbled forward with a startled gasp and went down hard, the impact knocking the breath clean out of me as I landed on the floor of Luca’s room. Luca jerked upright on the bed. “What the hell—” On the phone screen, Cassian narrowed his eyes. “Luca? What was that?” I flattened myself against the floor instantly, feeling a huge rush of anxiety replacing the blood in my veins. He slapped his palm over the phone screen, blocking the camera entirely. “Douche, I will call you back.” Cassian frowned, his voice muffled beneath Luca’s hand. “What do you mean you will call me back? Luca, are you—” He hung up. I stayed frozen on the floor for half a second too long. Luca looked down at me. "Were you eavesdropping on me?" “Why were you calling Cassian?” I retorted. “You told me that both of you don't get along but you sounded all chatty chatty with him. ” I pushed myself back against the wall. "Were you about to tell him about Eleanor?" Heavens. I was so stupid. “I should have known better. I should have listened to my mother. This is exactly what she warned me about, trusting strangers.” “Lyra,” Luca said, holding up a hand. “Wait. Chill. Just chill for one second.” “I cannot chill,” I snapped. “You had him on FaceTime. On FaceTime. Do you know what could have happened if he saw me?” He crossed the room in two strides and grabbed my shoulders. “Listen to me,” he murmured, eyes locked onto mine. “I did not tell Cassian anything. I wasn't going to.” His fingers pressed into my arm. And his towel fell off.Lyra's POVKira stood still for a while before finally comprehending what I said. She covered her mouth in shock, “One of the Rourke's children lives with you?” she asked and stared around frantically.I quickly pulled her aside before she makes a noise and attract Luca. “Just take a seat and don't say a single word. I'll be right back.”She took her seat on one of the chairs and watched as I left. I took Eleanor to her room, she immediately walked to her bed and laid down.“You seem tired today.” I said and kissed her cheek before leaving her room.I went to my room afterwards, it had been such a long day. I was exhausted and still concerned about a lot of things.Theron sending his men to abduct me finally showed how far he would really go to get things done. Who knows if would randomly do it again if he feels like? I could not risk letting that happen again.“I should speak to Luca about this. If not anyone else, I must talk to him. He knows his father well and would probably sugge
Lyra's POVOur shifts ended, it was time to finally head home. Kira and I walked home together this time, her sister remained back to finish her work, she had been slow and didn't finish most of her work earlier.“Are you sure you should leave her behind? I thought you two would go home together.” I asked Kira as we exited the supermarket. She scoffed, “Who cares about that low life. She can do whatever she wants. We actually never go home together, I just see her arrive whenever she wants. She is old enough too.” Kira replied.I couldn't tell if this was normal for her or she was just keen on hearing more of what I had to tell her. Kira was pretty invested in the story, mainly because it involved the Rourke family.I sighed and continued walking, she waved down a taxi and we both hopped in.The car had started moving before I noticed what was going on. “Wait, why are we boarding the same taxi home? Do we live the same part of the city?” I asked her.“Oh we actually do.” She replied s
Lyra's POVMy view was completely blocked until the van finally came to a stop. The windows rolled down, we were back in the parking lot of the supermarket. The door slid open, Reece was reaching out for something in a bag as I was urged out by another man. I stepped out, still trembling with fear.Reece stepped out afterwards with a small bag. “Alright, we are back now. You can go on with your day, I'll handle the rest.” He said, attempting to head into the supermarket.“Wait, you're coming with me? I thought you were to just let me go. What are you planning on doing this time?” I asked him.“ You've been gone for almost two hours. Perhaps you have a very good excuse to give your boss already?” Reece taunted.I paused, realizing he would save me my job if he manages to convince the manager. He has surely noticed my sudden disappearance and is not likely the type to accept lame excuses.“Wait, what will you convince him with? Don't tell me you plan on threatening him.”Reece scoffed,
Lyra's POVI was led into the only house in sight, there was nothing but a vast land ahead and behind us. I had no idea where in the world I was.“This way.” I was led into the house, the door opened and we walked in.There was a huge living room with what looked like extremely expensive interior designs. Surely this belonged to Theron, he is well known for extravagant things like this.A farm looks like what a lot of people would consider their dream-home.At the end of the room sat Theron himself alone. He was on his phone until he noticed our presence. Slowly, he dropped the phone and gazed at me for a while.“Sit.” He ordered, his voice carrying so much authority, I didn't need to hear it twice before quickly sitting down.My fingers trembled as I sat there, waiting for what he'd say. I avoided eye contact with him. From the very beginning, I have hated staring into his eyes.Everytime our eyes met, it looked like he'd ordered I get killed immediately. I always wondered how such a
Lyra's POVThe van slowly moved away from the parking lot. We drove past the entrance and my eyes caught up with Kira, it looked like she was searching for me. My heart skipped as we drove past her and she glared at the van suspiciously.I was begging and hoping she would see me from outside but she just continued staring till the van drove off. The tinted windows prevent anyone from seeing absolutely anything.“That wench, she has been staring at the van since we were scoping out the area. I can't believe she caused us so much trouble.” One on the men suddenly said.Kira was right all along, the black van wasn't an ordinary vehicle!“Made us go through so much trouble. We had to hire an old woman and start a new plan, that is absolutely ridiculous!” Another man added.I froze, were they talking about the old woman I helped or someone else. Now that I think of it, it was thanks to the old woman needing my help they were able to lure me out of the Supermarket.“Excuse me, did the old w
Lyra's POV“About...your sister. I am sorry for what I said yesterday.” I blurted. Kira squinted her eyes, she looked so confused. “Why are you apologizing out of nowhere? You're odd today suddenly, what more should I expect?”“Wait, what? I called your sister weird and your expression changed. I figured you'd be pissed at such comment.” I stated. She gasped and laughed suddenly, “That is what you're apologizing for? Why would I be pissed that you said some words about my sister? Oh,look at her. That isn't weird to you?”Celine appeared from the backroom, wearing a dark theme outfit under her work clothes. Her lips were painted dark and her makeup was quite heavy.I nodded slightly, “I guess it is... it's already normal to you isn't it?” I asked.“Of course! She is my sister to begin with isn't she?”It finally made sense now. I had misunderstood her reaction for anger, perhaps she was just thinking of something else. This was relieving, I hadn't made a new enemy like I thought. I h
Lyra's POVThe next morning, I woke up and the first thing I did was to go check if the door had been fixed. I had texted John, the handyman to come fix it very early.I walked into the living room to see a white paper on the table. My mind skipped, did Theron send another message already?Slowly,
Lyra's POVEleanor waved at my mother as we stepped out of her home. “ I'll be back tomorrow, Grandma. Don't miss me too much.”My mother smiled as she waved back, I pulled her to the roadside as I flagged down a taxi. We both hopped in and was taken home. The streetlights emerged down my street as
Lyra's POV“Mother!” Eleanor yelled as her eyes met mine. I smiled weakly as she hugged me. I stood on the doorstep for a while before shutting the door and walked inside, holding her.My mother was in the kitchen, I could hear her making something. “Lyra, you have finally returned. How was your- o
I squeezed my eyes shut so fast I nearly gave myself whiplash."Oh my God—""Shit—" Luca released me immediately, and I heard the sound of fabric rustling as he scrambled to retrieve the towel. "Okay, okay, don't...just give me a second.""I'm not looking!" My voice came out strangled. "I am NOT lo
