Seven years.

Two thousand five hundred and fifty-five days of pretending to be invisible inside a marriage that was never supposed to mean anything. And here I was, about to hand over the one thing I built with my own two hands just to give my daughter a father who never wanted her in the first place.

The equity transfer documents sat on my desk like a death sentence. Forty two percent of MedAI Technologies. My blood. My sleepless nights. My entire identity outside of being Mateo Castillo's contract wife.

My laptop screen glowed with Luciana's face. Five years old. Big brown eyes full of trust. She was sitting on Santiago's lap back in New York, wearing her favorite yellow dress, waving at me like I was the whole world.

"Mami, when are you coming home? Santiago burned the pancakes again."

"I did not burn them." Santiago's voice came through flat, but I could see the corner of his mouth twitching. "I caramelized them."

"They were black, Santiago."

"That's what caramelized means, little monster."

I laughed. It was the kind of laugh that came from somewhere deep and tired, the kind you only give to people who actually know you.

"Baby, Mami has some good news. I'm going to come home soon. And I might bring someone with me."

Her eyes went huge. She pressed both palms against the screen. "Is it a puppy?"

"No, sweetheart. It's... someone important. Someone you should know."

Santiago's face changed. The playfulness drained right out of it. He shifted Luciana off his lap gently and leaned closer to the camera so only I could see his expression. It was the look he always gave me when he thought I was about to do something stupid and brave.

"Val, you're really doing this? You're going to tell him about her?"

"She deserves a father, Santiago."

"She deserves a father who actually wants to be one." His jaw went tight. I could see the vein in his temple. "You want me to remind you what that man said when you told him you might be pregnant? Because I remember every single word."

I didn't need the reminder. That memory lived rent free in my head. Six years ago. Paris. The hotel balcony. Me standing there with my hands shaking, trying to find the courage to say it.

I'm late, Mateo. I think I might be pregnant.

And him. Not even looking up from his phone.

"Get rid of it. I'm not raising anything with a woman I didn't choose."

Get rid of it. Like Luciana was a stain on a shirt. Like she was nothing.

"I remember," I told Santiago. "But Luciana is five now. She asks me every week why she doesn't have a dad. I can't keep lying to her."

"You can keep protecting her."

"Maybe telling the truth is protecting her."

He went quiet. Behind him, Luciana was humming some cartoon song, completely unaware that her entire future was sitting on my desk in a manila folder.

I pulled the documents closer. My hand hovered over the signature line. Forty two percent of everything I built with Dr. Mendoza. Gone. Traded for the chance to walk back into the Castillo family and say, surprise, you have a granddaughter.

My pen touched paper.

And then the door exploded open.

Not opened. Exploded. The handle cracked against the wall hard enough to dent the plaster, and Mateo Castillo walked in carrying a woman soaked in blood.

He was six foot two of cold fury. His white shirt was ruined, dark red smeared across his chest and sleeves. His face was carved from stone, except his eyes. His eyes were wild.

"Valentina. Close that door. Now."

The woman in his arms was whimpering. She was wrapped in his suit jacket, her legs bare, her face buried against his neck. He was holding her like she was made of glass, cradling her with both arms, pressing her close to his body with a gentleness I had never once felt from him in seven years.

My stomach dropped to the floor.

"There's an ER doctor on call," I managed. "Dr. Fuentes is right down the hall."

"Fuentes is a man. She's not being examined by a man. You're doing it."

"Mateo, what happened to her? She needs to go through proper intake."

"I said you're doing it, Valentina. Don't make me repeat myself."

The woman shifted in his arms. Her face turned toward me, and even through the pain and the tears, I recognized her. Camila Valdez. Andrés's fiancée. Mateo's cousin Andrés, who had been sitting in a federal prison for the last five months.

Everything clicked into place with a sickening thud.

"Mami? Mami, who is that man? Is that my papa?"

Luciana's voice rang out from the laptop speakers, clear as a bell, filling the entire room.

My blood turned to ice. The transfer documents were right there on the desk. The laptop was wide open. Luciana's face was on the screen, bright and curious and innocent.

I moved faster than I had ever moved in my life.

I slammed the laptop shut with one hand and swept the documents into my drawer with the other, shoving it closed with my hip. My heart was slamming so hard I could hear it in my ears.

Mateo's eyes narrowed. He was still holding Camila, but his gaze was locked on me now, sharp and suspicious.

"Who was that? Who were you talking to?"

"Nobody." I pulled on my gloves. My fingers were shaking but I willed them steady. "Just a charity case. A video call with a little girl whose father died. I volunteer sometimes."

The lie tasted like ash. Calling my daughter a charity case. Calling her nobody. Saying her father was dead when he was standing right in front of me, covered in another woman's blood.

But it worked. Mateo's attention shifted back to Camila, because it always did. It always went to someone who wasn't me.

"Just fix her," he ordered, his voice dropping low and soft in a way I had never heard him use. Not for me. Never for me. "She's hurt. Please."

Please. He said please.

In seven years, Mateo Castillo had never once said please to me.

I snapped my gloves into place and pointed to the examination table, burying every feeling I had somewhere deep where it couldn't touch me.

"Put her down. Gently."

Day three of the countdown. Twenty seven days left.I drew another line on the calendar taped to my bathroom mirror. A neat, black slash through the number. Twenty seven more of these, and I would be free.I stared at myself in the mirror. Black fitted dress. Hair pulled back. Light makeup. Professional, polished, and not at all like a woman whose life had imploded seventy two hours ago.The healthcare symposium was being held at the Meridian Convention Center downtown. Three thousand attendees. Press. Industry leaders. The kind of event that used to be my world before I traded it all for a marriage license and a man who never once asked how my day went.I parked two blocks away and walked the rest of the distance. The morning air smelled like coffee and exhaust and something floral from the park nearby. Normal. Ordinary. The kind of morning that doesn't know it's about to become a memory you carry forever.I saw the crowd before I saw her.Camila made her entrance like she was walkin

Mateo's reasoning for refusing the divorce had nothing to do with me. Of course it didn't."Thirty days," he had said through the phone later that night, his voice flat and businesslike, like he was negotiating a lease extension instead of a marriage. "The contract still has thirty days left. I need the scandal to die down before Camila's engagement to Andrés is formally ended. If we divorce now and I go public with her immediately, it looks worse than it already does.""So you want me to stay married to you for another month so your affair looks slightly less disgusting to the public.""I want thirty days, Valentina. That's all.""Fine." I didn't even fight it. What was the point? Thirty days was nothing. I had survived seven years. "Thirty days. Then I never see you again."He hung up without saying goodbye. Typical. That evening, I sat across from Marisol at a wine bar downtown, watching her work through her second glass of red while she processed everything I had told her. Marisol

Three days.Three days of no sleep, no appetite, nothing but cold clarity and the systematic dismantling of a life I never should have built around a man who treated me like furniture.I spent the first night rereading our marriage contract. Section fourteen, subsection B. Dissolution terms. Funny how a lawyer could make the death of a marriage sound so clean. Mutual agreement or expiration of term. Division of independently held assets. No spousal support. No claims on pre-existing property. It read like a lease termination for an apartment neither party liked. The second day, I quit my job at St. Raphael's Hospital. Dr. Fuentes tried to talk me out of it. He said I was the best surgeon they had. I thanked him and handed in my badge. That hospital was the last thread connecting me to the Castillo orbit, and I needed to cut it clean. The third day, I went back to the house. Our house. Except it was never really ours. It was Mateo's house that I happened to live in, the way a potted pl

He laid her on the table like she was something sacred.I watched his hands. The way his fingers lingered on her shoulder. The way he brushed her hair back from her forehead and murmured something I couldn't hear. My husband. Touching another woman with more care than he had shown me in our entire marriage.I felt the familiar numbness settle over me like a second skin. Good. Numb was useful. Numb got the job done."Camila." I kept my voice flat. Clinical. "I need you to tell me where you're hurt."She looked up at Mateo instead of me. Her eyes were red and swollen, and she gripped his wrist like she was drowning. "I don't want her touching me. Anyone but her.""There's no one else right now." Mateo's hand closed over hers. "She's a doctor. She'll be professional."She'll be professional. Not she's my wife. Not she's good at her job. Just she'll be professional, like I was some machine he was turning on to perform a function."I'll be outside," he added, leaning down until his forehea
