Deeply in love, Maya suffered greatly at the hands of her husband, Ethan. He only pretended to care for her when his parents were around. However, when Ethan's parents had a terrible accident that left them in a coma, Ethan became the CEO of Zoe Law Company, free from their control. He wasted no time divorcing Maya. On the verge of signing the divorce papers, Maya discovered that the woman her husband wanted to replace her with was Anna, her best friend. Trying to comprehend the situation, she unexpectedly became the chairman of the board at Zoe Law Company instead of Ethan, the direct heir, due to the will. With this newfound power, Maya put the divorce on hold and planned to separate Ethan and Anna, then divorce Ethan, and treat him as if he never existed.

"Isn't my husband back from work?" I asked as I paused halfway down the stairs. My hand clutched the rich red fabric of my long gown, pulling it up slightly so I could move without tripping. My eyes swept the large, quiet living room. "Not yet, Ma'am," the head maid replied. She had stopped to ask if she could do anything for me. I looked at the clock. It was already half past seven in the evening. What could be the problem? I had called his assistant, who said he left around five p.m. By now, he should have been home. His parents were back from the office. Everyone was waiting for him. I lifted my hand to my face and lightly nibbled my lower lip as I walked back and forth across the large living room. Each second felt like a minute. Sighing, I glanced at the wall clock every second. "Excuse me, Ma'am," a soft voice spoke from behind me. I turned quickly, my red gown swaying with the motion, to see who it was. It was Sussy, the head maid, again. She stood a little awkwardly, her head slightly bowed, her hands nervously fiddling with her fingers. Her face held a worried look. "Yes, any problem, Sussy?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even, though my insides were a whirlwind of concern. "Should I start serving the food? You know that Big Madam doesn't eat once it's eight o'clock PM," she said, and my heart sank as I quickly thought things over. Could Ethan truly be absent from our wedding anniversary? It was our second one. I had poured my effort into this day, preparing a variety of dishes that I knew he loved. Every dish was a silent message of my care and love. His parents knew today was our second marriage anniversary, and both had come back from the office earlier to celebrate with us. "My mother-in-law doesn't eat once it's eight PM, and now it's already 7:45 PM," I muttered to myself, though no one was close enough to hear. My mind raced. "What could be keeping Ethan from 5 PM till now? If he had an important appointment, he would have mentioned it earlier." The logic felt sound, but it offered no comfort. "Ma'am Maya," Sussy's voice cut through my thoughts. "Ye...yes, what are you saying?" I asked, feeling flustered, pulling myself back to the present moment. "I asked if I should bring the food to the dining table," she said. "It's almost 8 PM, and Big Madam won't take it lightly." I shook my head slightly. "Don't worry, Sussy, just wait a bit. My husband will come soon, and his mother will understand." I tried to sound confident, but my heart was pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Yes, my husband will come back, especially since we're eating with his parents. He knows how strict his parents are and won't want to get on their bad side. Just then, my mother-in-law's voice came in, carrying from the doorway of the dining room. "Why is the table not yet set?" "Ehh-mm, Mother," I tried to speak, but I didn't know what to tell her. "Where is Ethan?" she asked without waiting for me to finish. "Don't tell me he isn't back yet because I checked his office to remind him of his anniversary dinner, and they said he left earlier," she added, her words adding to my growing panic. I stood there, dumbfounded, my mind scrambling to figure out how to defend Ethan, how to explain his absence. Just then, the front door opened, and he stepped inside. A wave of immense relief washed over me, and a small, genuine smile touched my lips. “He is here, mother,” I said immediately "Good evening, Mum," he said, his voice calm, as he moved toward her. He leaned in quickly and gave me a brief, light kiss on my cheek. "What's good about an evening when you almost missed your wedding anniversary meal?" my mother-in-law replied sharply, her words firm as she walked to her seat at the head of the table. Ethan followed her, his arms wrapping around her from behind as she reached her chair. He kissed her cheek again. "My mother, my woman," he said playfully, kissing her once more. "Please, leave me alone and face your wife," she said, her voice softening slightly at his affection. "I have my own handsome and sweet husband," she added, her hand reaching up to gently touch the jaw of my father-in-law, who was standing nearby. He smiled warmly at her and then tenderly kissed her hand. Their long marriage was a beautiful thing to witness, 27 years, and they still acted like newlyweds My father-in-law was always a calm and quiet person. But his wife? She was like a force of nature, a rugged woman ready to face any challenge head-on. She was strong and opinionated. Yet, I loved them both so much, and I admired the strong bond they shared. I knew Ethan was trying to avoid the question of where he was coming from, but I didn't want to stir up trouble. "Honey, please go upstairs, change, and come downstairs to join us," I said, trying to steer the conversation away from his late arrival. "Oh, yes, do it quickly, son," my mother-in-law added, her voice back to its firm tone. "It's getting late already, and I can't go against my rule of not leaving this table before 8:30 PM." Ethan smiled. "I'll join you guys shortly," he said, jumping up the stairs toward our room. Not too long after, he joined us at the dining table. His father led us in prayer, blessing our marriage with more fruitful years. "Amen," we all said together after his prayer, and we started eating. "Maya and Ethan, my children, what's the actual problem?" my mother-in-law, Mrs. Theo asked, clearing her throat in the middle of our meal, and her face was filled with worry. We left the hospital, and he dropped me off before leaving for his appointment. The moment the car pulled away, a deep stillness filled the space he'd left behind, a stillness that screamed louder than any noise. My heart felt heavy, like a cold stone in my chest.“Ma’am, ma’am,” Sussy's voice, soft and gentle, broke through my disturbed thoughts. I flinched, startled, then quickly tried to compose myself. It was extremely difficult to keep the tears from flowing. They were right there, pressing against my eyes, a burning sensation behind my eyelids.“Yes, Sussy, what is it?” I forced out, my voice strained, on the verge of breaking. I focused on her, trying to keep my face still, to conceal my inner turmoil.“Sir and Madam aren't back yet,” she began, her words, a gentle reminder of normal life, felt distant right now. “What should I make for lunch?”Lunch! The word seemed foreign and distant. Food was the last thing on my mind. My stomach felt tightly knotted, a mix of hurt and ange
A few minutes later, after getting dressed in clothes that felt too formal for the turmoil inside me, we left the house and headed to see Dr. Gilbert. The drive was silent, filled with unspoken tension We stepped into the waiting room of the hospital. The air conditioning felt cold against my skin. A nurse, her uniform crisp and white, nodded to us and pointed toward an open door. We walked in, my shoes making soft sounds on the polished floor. Dr. Gilbert, rose from his chair as we entered. He offered a polite smile. “Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Ethan," he said, his voice calm and professional. "Good morning, Doctor," we replied together, our voices a little stiff. He gestured to the two chairs in front of his large wooden desk, and we sat down, my hands clasped tightly in my lap. He settled back into his own chair, his gaze falling to his desktop computer. "Ehm, Mrs. Theo has already told me what the problem is, which is not having a child after two years of marriage," he said
Maya's POV I woke up the next morning. The first thing I saw was Ethan. He was sleeping on the other side of the bed, his back to me, his face turned toward the wall. A strong urge came over me to move closer, to reach out and hug him from behind, to feel some warmth, some closeness. But the fear of his scolding, stopped me cold. It was like a strong, invisible wall between us. I pulled back, deciding to respect myself and the painful distance he always kept. I then knelt by the bed, my knees pressing into the soft rug. I closed my eyes and silently prayed for a good and successful day ahead. After a few minutes praying, I rose from my knees and walked quietly to his side of the bed. "Ethan," I called him in a low and gentle voice. I reached out a hand and lightly tapped his shoulder. He stirred slowly. His eyes were still heavy with sleep, barely opening. It seemed he hadn't gone to bed early last night, which was often the case. He mumbled something, his voice thick with sl
Ethan's POV "This woman won't let me eat in peace," I muttered to myself as I heard my mother complaining about our childlessness. As the player I am, trying to keep up appearances for my parents, I pretended to love and care for someone I disliked so much. I couldn't hide my true feelings from my parents and hide them from her. I chose to hide it from my parents, since that's what they wanted, and show it to Maya. I knew she loved me dearly and wouldn't complain much, let alone divorce me. Even if she tried to complain to my parents, like she wanted to the other day, no one would listen to her, not even her parents, because they saw how much I cared for her in their presence. My mother went to her room, and I decided to enjoy my food with my father. I'd had a long day at the office and hadn't had a chance to eat. I was so hungry, but Maya stood up and said she was going upstairs. I put down my spoon to join her, even though I hadn't eaten enough. I didn't join her because s
I wasn't surprised, not even a little bit. This was what I had endured for the past two years of living with him. He took a bath, changed into his pajamas, and headed to the living room with his phone after making sure his parents had gone to bed. Outside our room, my husband was the most caring and loving husband anyone could imagine, leaving no room for me to complain because no one would believe what I said anyway. You might wonder why I was only crying at dinner. It wasn't because of a child; in fact, I was still a virgin. I had been in a relationship with my husband for ten years and married for two, yet no intimacy. When we go to the hospital, as my mother-in-law ordered, what will we tell the doctor? "That since we married, we haven't had sex? Oh God, how do I get through this? Will I ever be happy?" Thoughts raced through my mind as I sat on the edge of the bed, tears flowing down my cheeks like a river. "How do I open up and tell our parents that all this time, we haven'
"It's been two whole years, and still no grandchildren. Not even one." Her elbow rested on the table, a spoon still clutched in her hand, and her eyes were fixed intently on my husband and me, waiting for an answer. The question hit me like an arrow. I was speechless, my graceful face falling into sadness. My heart grew heavy, so much so that I couldn't bear it anymore. Tears filled my eyes. I bent my head, trying to hide my feelings. With my left hand, I grabbed a napkin without looking up. I felt my husband's arm around my shoulder. "It's okay, my love," he whispered, his voice soft and warm, trying to comfort me. Then he looked up. "Mum, can you please let us eat in peace? My wife and I will have children when God decides," he said, his voice showing anger. "Please stop bothering us." He turned back to me. "Hey, babe, please stop crying. It's okay. God will do it for us." His words were meant to soothe, but the dam had already broken. I couldn't hold back anymore and cried as i
