Chapter Four

Mason

She has the most beautiful laugh; they could light up the whole room.

I stood by the fireplace, watching Emily laugh as she hugged her mother, Esther, and exchanged pleasantries with who I perceived to be her uncle. She called him ‘Uncle Robert’ a few times. I couldn’t help but look around my surroundings: the marble floors and expensive paintings on every wall, the high ceiling, and a big chandelier at the center of the hall.

It was like a house from a Hollywood movie,I had known she was well-to-do from the moment I pulled her out of a sleek Porsche but this mansion confirmed that “well-to-do” was an understatement. And now that she would be taking over White Nova Robotics as CEO soon, it felt so unreal I was speaking with such a powerful personality. White Nova had always been the company I wanted to work in before I built mine, this was all too much to take in.

I was tempted to pinch myself to see if I wasn't dreaming but that would only make me look weird.

So I just put on a friendly smile on my face and gazed at everyone.

Robert turned to me, staring at me from head to toe, he then extended his hand and I took it with a nod and squeezed it softly. “Thank you again Mason for accepting this request and saving my niece out of that wreck. Emily right here lost her father a few years ago in a car accident maybe if you hadn't intervened that would have been her fate, you are truly an angel sent from heaven. I don’t know what we would’ve done if you hadn’t been there.”

“I just happened to be there at the right time sir,” I responded with my hands in my pocket. “I’m glad to be of so much help, I’m just happy she is okay.” I glared at Emily, who was still laughing at something her mom said. She was such a happy soul. The best death experience hasn’t dulled her spirit.

Robert leaned closer,” I appreciate you taking this job offer but also I need you to understand this is a delicate job, I could have picked anybody else but I chose you because we need someone like you, kind-hearted And caring to ensure Emily is safe and with all the new changes going on at White nova, Emily needs all the help she can get, is that clear?”

I nodded, a serious look plastered on my face. “I will not let you down Mr. Roberts, I've also dreamt of collaborating with White Nova Robotics, this is like a dream come true, I promise not to take it for granted sir.”

“Good, I guess I will see you tomorrow Maze,”

“It's Mason sir,” I corrected and he grinned.

“Okay Mason, that should be all for now right?”

“Yes, it is, thanks Mr. Robert, I will resume tomorrow,” I said giving him a firm handshake. I turned to face Emily, realizing that up until now, I hadn't even known her name. “ and it's nice to finally learn that your name is Emily.”

She smiled innocently, glancing up at me wearing a playful look. “ yeah I guess it's nice to meet my hero officially,”

I chucked looking down at the floor rubbing the back of my neck then looking up into her eyes. “ I guess helping people is my thing. But it is nice to meet you, Emily, it's getting dark, I should get going.”

“Are you sure you don't need my driver to drop you off at your side?” She asked, her tone laced with concern. “ you have been up all day helping me from the hospital. You don't have to stress yourself—”

“I'm fine Emily,” I said, smiling down at her. “ I've got my car, and it's a short drive from here.”

Esther wheeled her chair to our direction waving her hands to call out attention.

“Listen to Emily, we have so many rooms here, you could stay in one of them, you should stay for the night and have dinner with us.”

I smiled at her and nodded,” Thank you, Mrs White, Offering me a job is already enough for me plus I have to attend to someone at home.”

I really wanted to accept but I badly wanted to run off and share this good news with Madison, finally, our prayers have been answered and she can now live the life she had always dreamt of.

Esther smiled, though I could sense she was a little bit disappointed I turned her down.

“Very well. We won't force you to stay if you don't want to, but just know that you are always welcome here Mason, thank you so much for saving my daughter.”

“You are welcome ma'am,” I turned to leave throwing a quick wink at Emily. She smiled softly, shaking her head. “ Take care, Emily,” I said, waving at her.

“See you tomorrow, My hero,” She responded, her voice warm and soft.

As I stepped out, the evening airbrushed my skin making me have goosebumps, it felt very satisfying and exciting.

As I headed to the car, I began to reminisce on the whole event, how I had saved her from the accident and the job offer. I wasn't expecting to land a job at White Nova, making it my first highest-paying job. Especially after the fight I had with Madison earlier this morning about me finding a job.

She would be so happy when she learns about this good news.

I chuckled to myself as I hopped into the car, inserted the key in the ignition switch watching the car come to life.

The drive to my street was longer than I thought, or maybe it was because I was taking notes of how many seconds had passed by. As I took a right turn into my street I slowed down the car, squinting through my fogged-up window at two figures just outside my house. Madison… and my boss, Mr. Montez.

They were standing too close to each other and it didn't take long to see what was going on. My stomach tightened as I watched Madison lean in to kiss him on the lips and he grabbed her butt like he owned them.

I gripped the steering wheel tightly barely trying to keep calm as I parked at the garage. Without thinking I stormed out of the car not forgetting to close the door and marched up to the house.

“Madison, what the hell is happening here?” I yelled, my voice laced with anger, confusion, and something else, betrayal.

They broke away from their embrace, both of them looking equally shocked to see me. Madison's expression went from surprise to anger as she crossed her arms across her chest, her gaze averting from mine.

“Oh, Mason, don't act so surprised like you didn't see it coming.” she snapped, clearly unbothered by my presence.

My gaze rested on Mr Montez, who seemed bothered too, and unapologetic. “ And you Mr Montez I work for you, you are supposed to be my boss.”I snarled, barely able to contain my anger.

He shrugged, offering nothing but a cold and apathetic look. It only made my blood boil in anger

“You know what? I am done, I quit this job, I'm glad I don't have to come to that dumb company or write a shitty resignation letter,” I said unable to stop the word from coming out of my mouth, “ it was a crappy job anyway. And you Madison—” I turned back to stare at her, she looked down at her feets feeling a bit of shame now.” I loved you Maddie, I didn't have much but I was willing to give you everything, you knew I would be coming home tonight, you did this on purpose right?”

She looked up at me trying to mutter words but I cut her off. “I was going to tell you about the new job I just landed and about everything that happened today, but instead you were here making out with my boss? Do you despise me that much?”

Madison scoffed, rolling her eyes. “ stop playing the victim, its getting stale, you pushed me into this, you are always off doing your own thing, sitting all night in front of your goddamn computer. Maybe, just maybe if you gave me a little attention and money I wouldn't be looking for it somewhere else.”

“You have to stop blaming me!” I snapped, tempted to call her names I would regret. “ I gave you affection, showed you love and the second things stopped working for me you ran off to someone else?”

She grabbed her purse with a look of pure defiance in her eyes. “ You stopped being available a long time ago, Mason. Maybe Mr. Montez is more of a man than you, he buys me expensive things and takes me out on dates, we have been dating for three years and you aren't even financially capable of marrying me, maybe I don't care if you are upset and hurt because you don't deserve me, I deserve more, I deserve Mr Montez.” She said holding his hands.

I stood there fighting the urge to cry.

“Fine,” I said, stepping back, “ Then leave.”

She smiled at me,” Gladly, I would happily leave Mason, the landlord is going to throw us out anyways. I hope your new little job pays your house ren, ill be back for my luggages.”

She huffed and stormed out along with Mr. Montez. I didn't bother watching her leave; I just listened to her footsteps until they faded away.

    52. Maeve I never knew my word could change without its physically moving, but that’s exactly what happened. This only happened in movies. I never expected this to happen in real life, but as I stared at Mr. Smith, he just said something about Peter. He broke my heart and he made me realize that this marriage was about to be more complicated than I thought.Mr. Smith wasn’t just some rich, intimidating man I’d seen at corporate events. Not just the polished, silver-templed CEO who carried authority like a tailored suit.Peter’s. Father. The resemblance was subtle but undeniable now that I saw it. The eyes. The sharp line of the jaw. The way his mouth curved when he was thinking. And he was looking at me.I hadn’t realized my face had changed until his expression did.“Maeve?” he said gently. “Are you alright?”I blinked. My throat felt dry. I forced my lips upward into something that probably looked like a smile but felt like cracked porcelain.“Yeah. Yeah, I’m good,” I said too qui

Emily The hospital room smells like antiseptic and regret.I sit in the stiff plastic chair beside Mason’s bed, staring at the steady rise and fall of his chest. The oxygen mask fogs faintly with every breath he takes. The heart monitor beeps in soft, rhythmic reminders that he’s still here.Still breathing.Because of me.My fingers curl around the armrest. The image replays in my head no matter how hard I try to shove it away—the headlights, the screech of tires, the force of his body slamming into mine as he pushed me out of the way. That car was coming straight at me.It wasn’t an accident. I felt it. I know it.And Mason—stupid, infuriating Mason—did what he always does.He stepped in.Like some damn superhero.I scoff under my breath, but it dies halfway out because when I look at him lying there with tubes and bruises shadowing his jaw, my chest tightens painfully.“You just had to do it, didn’t you?” I murmur. “Couldn’t let someone else save the day for once.”My throat burns

50.Mason“What are you doing here?”I asked, pulling Madison outside the office into the hallway. “You cannot be here,” I said, my voice low but sharp enough to cut.She didn’t flinch. She looked at me the way she always did—like I was overreacting, like this was all some inconvenient misunderstanding. She scoffed.“Relax, Mason. I’m not here to redecorate your office. I just need five minutes.”“You shouldn’t even be past reception.”She shifted her weight, one hand resting on the curve of her stomach. The sight still sent a jolt through me—anger, confusion, disbelief all tangled together.“I’m only here to tell you something important,” she said. “There’s this safe test we can do while I’m still pregnant.”I stared at her.“What?”“It’s simple,” she continued, like we were discussing a dinner reservation. “We go to the hospital or a lab. They take a little blood from me and swab you. Results come fast and accurately,I just need a thousand pound.” She tilted her head. “What do you s

49.Emily Months after the incident with Eddie at the park, I got really close to Mason. I didn’t mean to. It’s just hard to avoid him or wipe him out of my life, he’s like the only friend I’ve got in this goddamn company. And he’s the only one who gets me in ways no one ever will. I’m brushing my teeth staring into the mirror when my phone beeps on the sink, I quickly rinse my mouth and glance at the screen. Shit! It’s Maeve, and I immediately answer it. “Hi, Maeve!”“Emily, I’m so sorry I didn’t call all this time.”I sat on the toilet seat, “The last time we spoke you seemed so sure about marrying this old man.”“He isn’t that old,”“Oh…”“I mean, he is old but he’s really cool…”“So, you really want to get married to him?”“Of course not, and I told him about it, he said he’s going to call off the wedding.” Maeve seemed too happy as she said those words.“I’m confused, if you didn’t want to marry this man then why did you call and tell me you were ready?”There was a pause on

48.Maeve “Maeve? Are you ready?”I heard Gianna yell from outside my door but I remained rooted to the ground, my breath jagged, my palm sweaty, I could feel the panic attack sip in as I stared at my reflection in the full-sized mirror. I looked red, my cheeks flushed, my red hair curled cascading down my shoulders and my lips painted with my favourite lipstick, peach colored lip stuck. The one Peter gave me on my birthday. I straightened the damn white dress that looked like I was preparing for my own wedding.“This is dumb,” I whispered, rubbing my temples with both hands.“Hurry up, girl, people are waiting!” Gianna’s annoying voice came again and I stiffened, my heart skipping a beat.My mother frightened me, hearing her voice makes me feel so unsafe, and stepping out that door would mean I’ll actually face my fears. The one I’d been hiding all these weeks. You know when I agreed to marry Mr Smith, it was out of desperation , I was afraid Gianna would rat me out to my father, E

I nodded immediately, “Of course, you’ve had a long day, I’ll see you tomorrow.”“Yeah, sure,” I watched her go back inside the house, and I wanted to grab her by the waist and kiss her on the lips, telling her everything would be okay, but it was too late; she was already gone. The next morning, I’m quite early at work. I didn’t sleep much, spent the entire night thinking about Emily and mapping out a plan for my company. Right now, I’m dozing at work with my head down on the table. The door bursts open and Emily walks in, she looks… well better than yesterday. Her hair is styled in a slick back. And she’s wearing her usual dark suit jacket and skirt. She smiled at me, “Looks like someone didn’t get enough night's rest,”I straightened in my seat, “Not really, I was up all night.”“I can see that,” she walked over to sit across from me. “So what are you up to?”“Nothing much, I was working on
