10. Vows

The creaking door opened, and Alex peeked in. With a delighted smile on his face, he walked in holding flowers. Tall and handsome, he looked like a stately fishbone tree outside the city.

He knelt before Kathy with a hint of apology in his voice, "I'm sorry I'm late. Whether you want to hit or scold me, I have no complaints."

Kathy's face was as cold as ice. "How did you know I was here? Father just ordered me to be brought here, and you followed closely behind. Didn't the servants stop you?"

Alex anxiously grabbed Kathy's arm, but she sharply shook him off.

"No," he hurriedly explained. "I saw you being scolded by your father yesterday, and I felt helpless and anxious. So I went to consult with my father and planned to sneak in through the window to see you. But you were gone. I had to bribe a guard to tell me where you were."

Tears welled up in Kathy's eyes. It was evident that her previous heartless words were just a test for Alex.
