Chapter 2

Author: Malt Syrup
Joey and I returned to the manor in silence.

With the tension subsiding, Joey apologized for lashing out at me. “I’m sorry, Jennie. My sweet Jennie, please forgive me.”

“You care more about Anna than you are about me, Joey,” I uttered dejectedly.

“No, not at all, Jennie. I’m only looking out for her because she’s your family.

“I’m the Alpha of the Moonstone Pack. I have a duty to the pack.”

He gave me a peck on the forehead and murmured in my ear.

“My Jennie, the Moon Goddess chose you to be my fated mate. You mean the world to me.”

Joey carried me into the bedroom, his kisses fluttering across my face and neck.

Holding me from behind, he tugged at my dress and traced his lips against my skin.

At the height of the moment, his phone rang.

There was no telling what the caller was, but Joey shot me a frown before muttering, “I apologize for Jennie’s behavior. I’m on my way now.

Realization struck me that it was Anna on the other end of the line.

I smiled bitterly to myself. Of course. Only Anna had the power to stop Joey from bedding his mate.

As I put on my clothes, Joey simply dreamily walked out on me without another word.

The front door shut with a loud thud, and the room fell back into a deafening silence.

The moonlight filtered in the window as I pulled myself together.

I scrolled through my social media feed, and a photo caught my eye.

Anna held the moonstone in her hand, her smile beaming.

Still in the same slip dress, Anna clung tight to Joey. The thin fabric could barely contain her curves.

All it took was a slight shift in movement for Anna to offer more than a peekaboo.

It was disgusting.

I turned off my phone and pulled a pillow over my head to cover my eyes.

My mind was filled with nothing but bare flesh. These images haunted me even in my sleep.

A raspy cough escaped from my throat.

I woke up the next morning, my head throbbing and my body burning.

The front door opened with a click. Joey was back.

Sensing my discomfort, he waltzed into the bedroom and checked my temperature.

“You have a fever, Jennie,” he said worriedly before grabbing a coat from the wardrobe for me.

“Come on. I’m taking you to the infirmary.”

That was Joey. He would break me, then hold me close as though nothing ever happened.

It was the reason why I had put up with him over the years.

By the time I drifted back to reality in a haze, I was lying in the infirmary.

Joey stayed close to me, looking rather devastated.

“The pack healer said that you’re carrying a pup. Since you’re wolfless, there’s a high chance it won’t have a wolf either. I won’t keep it.”

I sat up with a struggle, my face reflecting disbelief.

“Do you hear yourself, Joey? Wolf or not, this is our pup, we are talking about.

“How can you be so reckless with its life?”

Joey replied indifferently, “No, I know what I’m doing. As the Moonstone Pack’s Alpha, I must put the pack first. My pup has to be as strong as I am. Without a wolf, the pup won’t be accepted in this world.”

Fever clouded my mind while rage burned through me with a tremendous pain in my belly.

Pressing my hands against my abdomen, I confronted Joey in a cold sweat.

“What did you do to me?”

He looked at me with such chilling composure as if our pup and I were nothing more than strangers to him.

“I’m sorry, Jennie. I don’t want to raise a wolfless pup.

“You’re sick from carrying a pup. I have asked the healer to terminate it.”

My limbs went numb, and my heart broke into a million pieces. I couldn’t breathe.

My pup left me before I had a chance to meet it.

Disappointed in Joey, I lost the will to fight with him.

The nurse came by with my medication. I took the pills and felt drowsy right away.

The thunder rumbled outside the window.

Through the haze of my dreams, I caught Joey’s phone ringing.

“I’m scared, Joey.”

“There, there. I’ll be there.”

“No, no. Jennie is sick. She needs you more than ever.”

“You’re my priority, Anna. No one matters more than you.” Joey’s voice was sweet. It slipped his mind that I was his mate who had just lost our pup.

Alas, due to my heavy eyelids, I could only watch through a blur as Joey walked away.

The nurse ran into Joey while doing her rounds. She approached my bed and sighed.

“The male didn’t even notice that his mate’s IV is running dry. He sure is in a hurry to leave. His mate is most fragile after losing her pup. She needs her mate more than ever. What a sad excuse for a mate.”

Not in the mood to face the nurse’s sympathy, I closed my eyes and pretended to be fast asleep.

The nurse exited the ward and turned off the lights.

In the dark, I checked my phone and saw Anna’s update on social media.

“Thunder doesn’t scare me anymore.”

Anna, her face flushed, nestled against a werewolf’s broad chest

The male’s face was hidden, but I knew it was Joey.

Joey put one arm around Anna’s bare shoulders, and on his wrist was my third anniversary gift to him.

“A ridiculous pair,” I gritted out.

Reality dawned on me.

It wasn’t that Joey didn’t want to raise a wolfless pup. He was only after a pup with Anna.

Pathetically, it took me four years to see him for who he was.

I set down my phone and raised my right hand. A three-carat diamond ring glistened on my ring finger.

Joey gave me the ring at our mating ceremony. However, Anna helped him to pick one out.

On the same day Joey had given me the rock, Anna received a ten-carat diamond necklace.

Another notification popped up on my phone.

Anna dropped me a message, and it was a photo of two hands, one big and one small, clasped together.

The smaller hand, clearly a she-wolf’s, bore a ring carved with the pack’s totem.

The ring marked the power and status of the Luna.

On the day I lost my pup, my Alpha mate gave the Luna ring to my sister.

Lily and I walked away from the scene. My eye caught an SUV parked at the curb. Standing by the vehicle, Laurent looked at me tenderly. “Is it over?” Laurent asked. “Not yet, Grandpa. I want to ruin Joey completely,” I replied calmly. Judging by Laurent’s presence, he must be aware of what I was plotting. Still, he kept his silence and stayed by my side. Maybe his intention was to lend a hand. Sure enough, Laurent stroked my hair. “Very well. I will help you.” My tears burst out. “Thank you, Grandpa.” “Silly Jennie. You’re my daughter’s daughter. I don’t want you to dwell in the past.” He pulled me in for a hug. I threw myself into Laurent’s arms and let all the sadness out. Reality sank in that I still had a family who loved me. I was no longer alone. Six months later, Laurent, as the Alpha King, handpicked the finest and most suitable mate for me. His name was Henry Cavier.Henry was strong, considerate, handsome, and charming. It took three months

Joey and Anna’s mating ceremony was nothing short of lavish. Gale and Mollie invited the pack’s friends and family to the event. They were eager to prove that even though I was the Alpha King’s granddaughter, Anna was just as worthy. She could still become the pack Alpha’s Luna and uphold the family’s honor. However, they got another thing coming. There was no way in hell I would let them have their happy ending. My mother and brother, resting six feet under, would never rest in peace. I entered the venue, and Lily approached me with a smile. “I didn’t think you’d show up, Jennie.” I let out a chuckle, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “How could I miss my former mate and stepsister’s mating ceremony? “I’d regret it if I didn’t witness this moment.” Aware of where I stood now, Lily asked curiously, “I heard that you’re learning to become the next ruler. How does it feel? Are you enjoying it?” “Absolutely,” I answered. Laurent took care of everything, even hiring

With the mate bond broken and out of the way, Laurent and I sauntered out of the manor right away. A Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up right in front of us. Standing by the vehicle, Laurent opened the car door for me. “My Jennie, it brings me joy that I’m taking you home.” The home he spoke of was at the very heart of the werewolf realm, where my mother once grew up.It was tens of thousands of miles away from the Moonstone Pack. The lengthy journey took us three days before we arrived outside an estate. “Welcome home,” Laurent said. He led me into the estate, and the staff lavished me with royal treatment. My phone rang.“Am I talking to a Jennie Bate?” An unfamiliar female voice came on the phone. “Yes, I am she. And you are?” “I’m calling from the Moonstone Pack’s infirmary. Joey Clad was involved in a crash and is clinging to his life. You’re listed in his emergency contact—” “I’m sorry.” I interrupted her abruptly. “I’m no longer in the Moonstone Pack. Find an

Laurent and I stepped into the manor. Glancing at the giant Alpha King crest on Laurent’s finger, Gale asked the obvious question in surprise. “W-Who are you?” Laurent, taking me by the hand, made a beeline to the head seat in the living room, his gaze piercing. “I am Laurent Ford, the Alpha King and Jennie’s grandfather.“Twenty-two years ago, my daughter kept her royal blood a secret and mated with you. Now, I’m taking my granddaughter, Jennie, home.” Dread washed over Gale. “No, Alpha Ford. This has to be a mistake. Jennie has never shifted. She can’t even beat an Omega. Thanks to the Bates’ standing in the pack, Joey looked past her flaw and mated with her.” Even at this point, Gale refused to believe that I carried the Alpha King’s blood in me. I scoffed, my voice dripping with disdain, “Oh, I forgot to mention that I have shifted today. Like Mom, I am a white wolf. The moonstone is the Moon Goddess’ gift to white wolves. Please return the stone to me. It belongs

Energy flooded my veins, my muscles bulging with seemingly endless strength. My canines extended into fangs, my nails sharpened into claws, and my black hair bleached into a silvery white. I shifted into a white, agile she-wolf. However, vengeance consumed my entire reason. The last thing on my mind was to celebrate my first shift. This was for my unborn pup and my poor, sweet brother, Jake. I pounced on Anna and Jake. “I’m going to kill you.” My shifting sent Joey and Anna into a spiral. “A white wolf. She’s a white wolf…” As expected from an Alpha, Joey was quick to snap back to reality. He gave Anna a nudge and shouted, “Run!” Joey put himself between us to cover Anna’s escape. There was no way I would let them get away with it. Blood must be paid with blood. I was right on Anna’s tail all the way to the street. Even on the broad street, she managed to lose herself in the heavy traffic.I was about to sniff her out when an SUV screeched across the road, cu

Jake wasn’t very keen on Anna or Mollie. I laid him to rest next to our mother’s grave, so no one would disturb his peace. “I won’t let them get away with this, Jake.” I removed the diamond ring from my ring finger and set it down at the base of Jake’s headstone. On my life, I swore to make Joey and Anna pay for what they had done. For the next five days, I focused on Jake’s burial, not once stepping back into the manor. I was faced with Joey’s questioning when I dragged myself back home. “Where have you been? Do you know how worried Anna and I have been? “Give Anna a call right now and admit your mistake. You shouldn’t make her worry.” I knew that Joey couldn’t care less about my whereabouts. His primary concern was Anna. However, I was no longer the Jennie I was five days ago. I was out for blood, not at all wasting my breath on the likes of him. I brushed past Joey and headed for the bedroom with a blank face. Joey caught up to me and grabbed my right arm.
