Chapter 3

Author: Malt Syrup
For a whole week, I was on my own in the infirmary. Joey hadn’t shown his face once.

It never occurred to me that Joey would bring Anna along on the day of my discharge.

I didn’t grill him, though, as my brother, Jake Bate, was back from field training. As soon as he heard that I was unwell, he rushed to the infirmary and handled all my discharge papers.

As our eyes met, tension hung heavily in the air.

Anna said with a smile, “Joey, I forgot to get flowers for Jennie. Can I trouble you to get a bouquet of red roses?”

Joey sprang to meet Anna’s request without so much as glancing at my discolored face.

“Sure thing. I’ll be right back.”

With Joey gone, Anna switched up her game and ordered us around.

“Grab the bags, Jake.”

Never one to be fond of Anna, Jake ignored her demand and warned, “Don’t you pick on Jennie, Anna, or I’ll make you pay. I could care less whether you have a powerful Alpha on your side.”

Jake’s words didn’t intimidate Anna in the slightest. She trailed behind us and said, “Joey’s car is in the parking lot, Jennie. He has a surprise for you.”

“What?” Even when I caught the envy in Anna’s eyes, my gut told me to stay away.

Jake whispered in my ear, “It’s okay. I won’t let anything happen to you on my watch.”

Meeting Jake’s determined gaze, I took a moment to hesitate before nodding.

We walked toward the parking lot, completely missing the sinister smirk on Anna’s face.

The air in the parking garage was chilling, and several lights buzzed and flickered overhead.

Jake took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

Five rogues popped out of nowhere and surrounded Jake and me as we headed to Joey’s car.

Standing outside the circle, Anna commanded the rogues, “Kill her.”

The five rogues shifted into wolf form, their claws sharp and their fangs bare, as they lunged at me.

With lightning reflexes, Jake swung the suitcase at the scar-faced rogue.

Bloodthirsty, four werewolves clamped down on Jake’s limbs.

The last werewolf leaped straight for me.

I was quick to dodge, but the werewolf’s claws tore through my collar and left a blood trail along my neck.

As my heart raced, I felt a wolf reaching out to me.

It was unlikely, though. During my moment of distraction, the rogue got right in my face again. I had to fight him with everything I had.

Meanwhile, Jake was pinned down by four werewolves. As I fell into danger, Jake put up a fight, his limbs ripping.

Despite being drenched in blood, he bolted toward me and pounded my attacker on the head.

Blood spilled all over the concrete floor, either coming from Jake or the rogue.

Anna let out a shriek. It was total mayhem.

“Joey!” Anna shouted.

Through the madness, a massive black wolf came charging from a distance with incredible speed.

I knew that it was Joey, my aloof mate.

It never crossed my mind that Joey had shared a mind link with Anna.

No matter the distance between them, Joey could sense Anna’s distress and rush to her rescue.

Where would that put me?

I was Joey’s future Luna without a wolf. Despite screaming my lungs out in my head, I received nothing but dead silence.

Joey was the Moonstone Pack’s Alpha. After shifting, he could scare the rogues away with a howl.

He shifted back to human form and took a glance at me before making a beeline for Anna.

“Are you hurt, Anna?” Joey asked nervously.

“I sprained my ankle,” Anna replied tearfully.

After a pause, she jumped into his arms to cry her eyes out.

“Joey, these rogues often linger outside my manor. They tried to attack me again today.”

The medical team arrived at the scene upon hearing the commotion. In their haste, they only brought a single stretcher.

“Jake is seriously hurt. He needs urgent care,” I cried to the healer while cradling Jake.

However, Joey said, “Jennie, Anna is injured and scared. She should take priority.”

He put Anna down on the stretcher before turning to me with the authority of an Alpha.

“You’re the future Luna, and Jake’s the future pack warrior. Show some compassion to other pack members.”

“But Jake is bleeding out. He’s barely breathing.” I raised my bloodied hands.

Joey seemed swayed for a moment, but Anna uttered in a fragile voice, “My ankle hurts, Joey. Is it broken?”

He looked back at Anna and made up his mind.

“You and Jake can wait, Jennie.”

He left with the medical staff, escorting Anna away.

My heart sank as they disappeared.

It took everything in me to hold Jake up, but his weight was double mine. I could barely move him on my own.

His blood stained my clothes red, and his pulse grew faint.

“Help!” I shouted.

I couldn’t ditch Jake to find help because the rogues might just come back for vengeance.

Jake lay in my arms, struggling to breathe. He tried to speak.

He raised his hand to wipe my tears.

“Jennie… I-I thought that I could keep you from harm if I became a strong warrior…

“Ugh… Jennie, I found a way to bring back your wolf…”

Before Jake could finish, his grip on my hand loosened.

He was gone.

My only brother lay dead in my embrace. The light in my world went dark.

Then, there it was again. I could hear the howling of my wolf.

Lily and I walked away from the scene. My eye caught an SUV parked at the curb. Standing by the vehicle, Laurent looked at me tenderly. “Is it over?” Laurent asked. “Not yet, Grandpa. I want to ruin Joey completely,” I replied calmly. Judging by Laurent’s presence, he must be aware of what I was plotting. Still, he kept his silence and stayed by my side. Maybe his intention was to lend a hand. Sure enough, Laurent stroked my hair. “Very well. I will help you.” My tears burst out. “Thank you, Grandpa.” “Silly Jennie. You’re my daughter’s daughter. I don’t want you to dwell in the past.” He pulled me in for a hug. I threw myself into Laurent’s arms and let all the sadness out. Reality sank in that I still had a family who loved me. I was no longer alone. Six months later, Laurent, as the Alpha King, handpicked the finest and most suitable mate for me. His name was Henry Cavier.Henry was strong, considerate, handsome, and charming. It took three months

Joey and Anna’s mating ceremony was nothing short of lavish. Gale and Mollie invited the pack’s friends and family to the event. They were eager to prove that even though I was the Alpha King’s granddaughter, Anna was just as worthy. She could still become the pack Alpha’s Luna and uphold the family’s honor. However, they got another thing coming. There was no way in hell I would let them have their happy ending. My mother and brother, resting six feet under, would never rest in peace. I entered the venue, and Lily approached me with a smile. “I didn’t think you’d show up, Jennie.” I let out a chuckle, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “How could I miss my former mate and stepsister’s mating ceremony? “I’d regret it if I didn’t witness this moment.” Aware of where I stood now, Lily asked curiously, “I heard that you’re learning to become the next ruler. How does it feel? Are you enjoying it?” “Absolutely,” I answered. Laurent took care of everything, even hiring

With the mate bond broken and out of the way, Laurent and I sauntered out of the manor right away. A Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up right in front of us. Standing by the vehicle, Laurent opened the car door for me. “My Jennie, it brings me joy that I’m taking you home.” The home he spoke of was at the very heart of the werewolf realm, where my mother once grew up.It was tens of thousands of miles away from the Moonstone Pack. The lengthy journey took us three days before we arrived outside an estate. “Welcome home,” Laurent said. He led me into the estate, and the staff lavished me with royal treatment. My phone rang.“Am I talking to a Jennie Bate?” An unfamiliar female voice came on the phone. “Yes, I am she. And you are?” “I’m calling from the Moonstone Pack’s infirmary. Joey Clad was involved in a crash and is clinging to his life. You’re listed in his emergency contact—” “I’m sorry.” I interrupted her abruptly. “I’m no longer in the Moonstone Pack. Find an

Laurent and I stepped into the manor. Glancing at the giant Alpha King crest on Laurent’s finger, Gale asked the obvious question in surprise. “W-Who are you?” Laurent, taking me by the hand, made a beeline to the head seat in the living room, his gaze piercing. “I am Laurent Ford, the Alpha King and Jennie’s grandfather.“Twenty-two years ago, my daughter kept her royal blood a secret and mated with you. Now, I’m taking my granddaughter, Jennie, home.” Dread washed over Gale. “No, Alpha Ford. This has to be a mistake. Jennie has never shifted. She can’t even beat an Omega. Thanks to the Bates’ standing in the pack, Joey looked past her flaw and mated with her.” Even at this point, Gale refused to believe that I carried the Alpha King’s blood in me. I scoffed, my voice dripping with disdain, “Oh, I forgot to mention that I have shifted today. Like Mom, I am a white wolf. The moonstone is the Moon Goddess’ gift to white wolves. Please return the stone to me. It belongs

Energy flooded my veins, my muscles bulging with seemingly endless strength. My canines extended into fangs, my nails sharpened into claws, and my black hair bleached into a silvery white. I shifted into a white, agile she-wolf. However, vengeance consumed my entire reason. The last thing on my mind was to celebrate my first shift. This was for my unborn pup and my poor, sweet brother, Jake. I pounced on Anna and Jake. “I’m going to kill you.” My shifting sent Joey and Anna into a spiral. “A white wolf. She’s a white wolf…” As expected from an Alpha, Joey was quick to snap back to reality. He gave Anna a nudge and shouted, “Run!” Joey put himself between us to cover Anna’s escape. There was no way I would let them get away with it. Blood must be paid with blood. I was right on Anna’s tail all the way to the street. Even on the broad street, she managed to lose herself in the heavy traffic.I was about to sniff her out when an SUV screeched across the road, cu

  • Blood for Betrayal   Chapter 4

Jake wasn’t very keen on Anna or Mollie. I laid him to rest next to our mother’s grave, so no one would disturb his peace. “I won’t let them get away with this, Jake.” I removed the diamond ring from my ring finger and set it down at the base of Jake’s headstone. On my life, I swore to make Joey and Anna pay for what they had done. For the next five days, I focused on Jake’s burial, not once stepping back into the manor. I was faced with Joey’s questioning when I dragged myself back home. “Where have you been? Do you know how worried Anna and I have been? “Give Anna a call right now and admit your mistake. You shouldn’t make her worry.” I knew that Joey couldn’t care less about my whereabouts. His primary concern was Anna. However, I was no longer the Jennie I was five days ago. I was out for blood, not at all wasting my breath on the likes of him. I brushed past Joey and headed for the bedroom with a blank face. Joey caught up to me and grabbed my right arm.
