“I know it’s hard for you, child,” my mother said, her voice heavy with concern.

“No, it’s okay. I’m strong, Mother, and you know it.”

“I’m so sorry," she apologized. "Blame your mother for being useless."

“Mother, I’m fine. Everything will be fine.” I didn’t understand why the moon goddess had chosen such a cruel fate for me. What had I done to offend her so deeply?

“Sit down, Mother.” I held her hand, trying to offer some comfort.

“I know you are going through a lot of things. With her by the king’s side, you won’t be able to live the way you please.” She sighed, her worry etched deep into her features. “No one is going to like you since they all think that you are here to seduce their king.”

“I don’t care what they think about me, Mother,” I muttered. “All that matters to me is you.”
