DREA

Light slowly crept into my window, sun rays scattering across my blanket. My eyes squinted at the sudden intrusion, my hands reaching up to rub my puffy eyes.

I barely slept last night.

All I could think about was what my life was supposed to turn into and the drastic changes that would come with it.

My unanswered questions never left my thoughts. Not for one second.

I was going to get my answers today.

Yawning and stretching my limbs which felt cramped, I slowly sat up and reached out for my phone next to my bed. I turned it on and looked at the time. 8:30 am. I had a lecture at 10 am so an hour and a half ought to do for preparations.

I peeled the blanket off my body and placed my feet on the cold hardwood floors. Getting up, I stared at the mess of a person I was in the mirror.

Tangled dark brown curls.

Dull brown eyes.

Dark circles from the lack of sleep.

That scar on my forehead.

Instinctively, I reached for the scar and traced its outline, the dark line stretching along my hairline. It was barely noticeable from afar but up close, you could definitely see it. It had always been a mystery as to how I got it.

Too bad Dad wasn’t around for me to ask.

Sighing, I slowly dragged myself to the bathroom, dreading the day ahead of me.

I had a test today. A test I barely studied for. The events of yesterday completely made me forget that I even had school today. A test at that.

I turned on the shower and waited for a minute before checking the temperature. The familiar feeling of hot water touching my skin indicated that it was hot enough. I stripped and got into the shower.

A hot shower always introduced room for my chain of thoughts.

August Wolfe.

How was he associated with my father?

Was he also forced into this contractual marriage?

Does he know me?

A shiver ran down my spine as cold water hit my skin, snapping me out of my chain of thoughts.

I guess that was it for today.

Getting out of the shower, I wrapped a towel around myself, immediately comforted by the warmth it brought to my skin.

I headed back to my room and inched towards what I could barely call a closet.

I picked out a pair of washed jeans and a long-sleeve shirt for the day. It’s not like I had anyone to impress.

After getting dressed, I put my wet hair in a bun and arranged my school bag.

I didn’t have work today due to the coffee shop being fumigated. After school it is.

I checked the time on my phone once more. 9:28 am.

I had to go immediately because the bus I took to school usually left around 9:40 am.

I slowly opened the door of my room, making a beeline to the front door but halted in my tracks when I saw Ivanka staring at me, an unreadable expression on her face.

She was holding a coffee cup as she stared, slowly sipping it and never taking her eyes off me. It was as if she were studying me.

What was her deal?

“Morning.” I mumbled, and without waiting for a reply, I walked out of the house.

AUGUST I decided not to say anything to her for now and give her time to process this new information. After a twenty-minute drive, we pulled up at the driveway of the house.I opened the door for her, helping her out and giving my keys to a guard.“Bring the box in the backseat in,” I instructed another guard and he nodded.“Can you take me to my room?” Drea finally spoke for the first time since we left her stepmother's house.“Of course.” With that, we slowly walked down the hall and into her room, where I helped her get settled into the bed.I dragged a nearby stool towards the bed and Yoon a seat in front of her, taking her hands in mine.“Are you okay? Do you need anything?” I asked, staring at her.Her eyes remained on our hands.“Do you think Dad was right?” She asked. My brows furrowed.“About what?”“About her leaving?”I took a deep breath in, before exhaling.“I think… your father believed every word he wrote.”She looked up at me, her eyes welling up again.“Why would sh

AUGUSTWhere is she?I was dying over here. Before Ivanka could continue talking about her gambling methods, I interrupted her.“I should probably go check on Drea.” I forced a smile, standing up.“Off you go then.” She smiled, taking a sip of her wine and winking at me.Huh?I walked down the hall to the bathroom and placed several knocks on the door.No response.I slowly pushed the door open and looked inside the restroom. She was not here.My heart began to beat faster against my chest.Where was she?I checked the nearby rooms and was about to shut the door when I heard a sob from inside the room.I paused, pushing the door open and walking inside.I saw a door on the other side of the room and walked towards it before pushing it open.My eyes landed on Drea who sat on the floor, her body shaky with sobs.My eyes widened.“Drea!” I exclaimed, bending down and taking a seat next to her and cupping her face in my hands. She had tears streaming down her face.My heart tightened.“Wh

DREA“What? Why?” He asked, his voice sharp.“Just do it.” I hushed, just as Ivanka walked back into the room with a tray of snacks in her hands.“Here you go.” She smiled, looking at August.“I’m going to the bathroom.” I declared, getting up.August looked up at me with a frown on his face.“Should I help—”“No!” I quickly declined, looking between him and Ivanka.“Keep him company.” I flashed a fake smile at Ivanka.“Don’t worry.” She gleamed, looking at him.“Where is the bathroom?” I asked her.“Down the hall to your right.”I nodded, and with that, I began to limp down the hall. When I was sure I was out of their line of sight, I stopped in my tracks and began looking for Ivanka’s room. That was where most of the things were last time.I pushed open the door and took everything in.It was way more spacious than the room at the previous house with a huge queen-sized bed in the center and a small couch tucked into the corner of the room. The vanity was huge and was located next to

AUGUSTWithin minutes, I saw his car pull up in the driveway through the glass building.Ian stepped out dressed in a matching blue set which was a pair of joggers and a hoodie. He rang the doorbell and I stopped Drea just as she stood up to go and get it.“Don’t even think about it,” I told her, and she stuck her tongue out playfully.I smiled, turning my attention back to my guest.I slowly made my way towards the front door and pulled it open.Ian stood there with an unreadable expression on his face.“Hi.” He muttered.I moved aside, gesturing that he come in.He nodded, stepping into the house and heading towards the kitchen where Drea sat.“Hi Ian.” She smiled, and I watched him bend down to hug her.“How are you feeling?” He asked her, pointing to her leg.“It’s torture!” She sighed, closing her eyes slightly. He laughed as a response, before the house fell quiet.“So….” Drea started, and I looked at her.“Talk to him.” She mouthed, her eyes wide.I cleared my throat, scratchin

AUGUSTI dished our dinner onto plates, just as Drea limped into the kitchen with a yawn.My eyes widened and I immediately went to her side to support her.“You are not supposed to be walking around like this!” I exclaimed, helping her sit on a stool in the kitchen.“I won’t die if I walk, you know.” She stated.I picked up her food from the countertop and placed it in front of her.She breathed in the scent with her eyes closed and a lazy smile on her face.“Smells amazing.” She said excitedly, clapping her hands together.A smile made its way to my face.So adorable.“Well, dig in,” I told her, placing a fork in her left hand and a knife in her right.I watched her cut into her steak before putting it in her mouth.“So good!” She moaned, taking another bite.I took a seat in front of her and started eating my dish.Could use a little bit more salt.“So,” Drea started, wiping the corners of her mouth with a napkin. “What happened with you and Ian?” She asked, placing her cutlery bac
