                         ~JESSICA~

I had rehearsed my response a hundred different ways—some polite, others laced with fury. But none of them felt right.

Because nothing about this was right.

Still, I walked into his office, spine straight and palms sweating.

Daniel looked up immediately. As always, unreadable. Calm. Too calm.

“I assume you’ve made a decision,” he said, closing his laptop.

I stood in front of his desk, holding his gaze.

Then I swallowed hard and long.

“I’ll do it.”

I breathed out.

His expression didn’t change, but something shifted in the air between us. A beat passed.

“Under one condition,” I added, voice firm.

“I’m listening.”

“I want full coverage for Sarah. Her treatments, her therapy—everything. And a lump sum at the end of a year. Enough for me to start over.”

Daniel stood slowly, his hands in his pockets.

“Done.”

I blinked. “You’re not even going to negotiate?”

“I don’t waste time haggling over what I’ve already decided.”

Of course not. I bit back the urge to roll my eyes.

“One more thing,” I said.

He raised an eyebrow.

“There will be no form of romance at all. For one year” I told him.

Now his brow twitched. Slight amusement? Maybe even respect?

“Deal,” he said.

He extended his hand again. This time, I shook it.

His palm was warm. Solid. The touch lingered just a second too long.

One year!!!

God help me.

*****

“Fucking tell me you're joking right now??” Grace was almost screaming in disbelief when I told her about Daniel and I.

“I'm as serious as I will ever be,” I retorted.

“You're getting married to Daniel Sutherland?? The one I know?? The popular billionaire?? You of all people??” She questioned still in absolute disbelief.

“A fake marriage” I quickly corrected. “And what do you mean by me of all people??”

“Because it's hard to believe! Of all the women in the world, you're the one to answer his name. You'll be Mrs Sutherland?? Unbelievable!”

“Am I not worth him?? I stand a chance against other women…”

“You know that's a lie!” Grace interrupted me. “You're not even close to the classy, beautiful and elegant women that flock around him!”

“You're looking down on me,” I frowned.

“I'm sorry, sis, but I was just stating the fact” she said and I sighed deeply.

She was right. I wasn't up to Daniel Sutherland's standards in every way and it's a wonder why he asked me to marry him.

Why me?? Why me of all women??

“Why you?” Grace asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I also don't know.”

“Why did you accept a contract marriage?” She asked.

I didn't want to tell her it's because her mom was lying on the sick bed and fighting for her life.

Grace knew her mom was sick but she didn't know how bad it was.

And thank goodness school didn't really allow her to go and visit Sarah.

“For the money” I briefly replied.

“What if you fall in love with him??” She asked.

“That's never happening!” I replied.

“And what if he does??”

I laughed hard at the thought of Daniel falling in love with me.

Me?? Not possible!!

“That. Would. Never. Happen” I laid emphasis on each word.

“So you mean to tell me that you both will live together for a year with any form of romance, kissing….”

“Grace!!!!”

“I'm sorry” she laughed.

“A young girl like you shouldn't be talking about romance and the rest. Besides, he didn't say anything about us living together” I told her.

“Still can't believe this, Sis. I'm so happy. I'll get to brag that Daniel Sutherland is my brother-in-law in school” she said, almost giggling.

“Mom would be so happy to hear this. She has always worried about you and your future and wanted you to end up with a well to do man, but guess who is ending up with the famous billionaire??” She winked at me.

“You're forgetting it's not a real marriage and it's going to end after a year” I rolled my eyes.

“Anything can happen. Feelings might come in” Grace insisted.

“Nothing is happening. Now run along and let me have some rest. I had a hectic day at work” I dismissed her.

****

We sat in the conference room the next day, the large glass table between us littered with documents.

A lawyer from Daniel’s legal team explained the prenup terms in dry, clinical detail.

Daniel, for once, said almost nothing—just watched me, as if I might bolt again.

“Do you have a lawyer?” the man asked me politely. I found out later that he was Daniel's personal lawyer and the one that had brought the contract to Daniel.

I hesitated. “Not yet.”

Daniel nodded to his lawyer. “He’ll get you one. On my dime. Neutral party.”

I looked at him sharply. “You’re going to pay for my lawyer?”

“I want this clean, Jessica,” he said. “No one can say you were pressured. I want the paperwork airtight.”

That almost sounded… honorable. Which worried me more than if he’d just been a jerk.

After the lawyer left, the tension shifted.

“So,” I said, flipping through the draft agreement, “how do we fake a marriage and keep it believable?”

Daniel leaned back in his chair, casual in a way that looked practiced.

“We’ll move into my penthouse. There will be public appearances—charity events, business functions, maybe even an interview or two.”

“You want to live together?”

He gave me a look. “You think we can convince the world from opposite apartments?”

I sighed. “Fine. But I’m keeping my room locked.”

He smirked. “That won’t be necessary.”

“Oh, it absolutely will.”

He stood and walked to the window, his silhouette framed by the city lights.

“Everything else stays normal,” he said. “You still work for me, but in public, you’re Mrs. Sutherland.”

The words landed like a stone in my chest.

Mrs. Sutherland.

“You’ve done this before,” I said suddenly.

He looked back at me, puzzled. “What?”

“Negotiated. Arranged. Controlled everything. But this time… it’s different, isn’t it?”

His face hardened. “Let’s just say I’ve learned what happens when you let people in.”

I studied him.

So there was a story. A past. Maybe even a scar or two buried behind the perfect suits and sharp words.

“Why me, Daniel?” I asked, softer now. “You could have picked anyone. Someone easier. More agreeable. Someone who wouldn’t run out on her first day.”

He didn’t answer right away.

Then, with a voice barely above a whisper, he said, “Because you are what I need.”

Our eyes met. The air thickened again.

This was just business.

But somehow, I already knew—

It was going to get much more complicated than that.

  • Bound by a billionaire    The past

~JESSICA~~THE PAST~ “Ma'am…we're here already” the taxi driver tapped me softly, waking me up from my sleep.I yawned and stretched my body, looking around me.“I've been calling you since. But you're too deep in sleep” he said.“I'm sorry, Sir” I apologized. Last night had been another long one, staying up to send out job applications to as many companies as I could find. With each passing day, I felt the weight of responsibility press harder on my shoulder, but today especially, it was crushing me.The moment morning broke, I rushed to the hospital to check on my stepmother—though in every way, Sarah was my true mother.Three days ago, she had been admitted with severe pain, and every test the doctor ran seemed to pull us closer to a diagnosis I dreaded more with each hour. And then the tests were really expensive and was draining me financially, more reason why I need a job as soon as possible and stay awake most nights to send application letters.Sar

  • Bound by a billionaire    Another reason

~JESSICA~Dinner was served on a long glass table that looked like it belonged in a museum, not a home. Two place settings. Candles flickering between us. And silence—again.Daniel cut into his steak with the precision of a man who did everything deliberately. I barely touched my food.“You’re not eating,” he said, eyes still on his plate.“I’m not hungry.”He didn’t push. Just nodded and kept chewing.I stared at him for a moment, really looked at him. His jaw was tight, his posture rigid, his eyes always calculating. But beneath it all, there was a flicker—something that looked a lot like pain.I set my fork down. “Why did you want to marry me so fast?”He looked up slowly, his expression unreadable. “We already discussed this. You needed money. I needed….”“A wife,” I cut in. “For appearances, right? Business-related. To sign a contract deal.”“Yes.”“But there’s more, isn’t there?” I asked. He didn’t respond immediately. His silence wasn’t just avoidance,

  • Bound by a billionaire    Contract/fake marriage

~JESSICA~ The wedding was the Saturday of the same week.Daniel was so fast about everything. It was as if he's scared I would change my mind.It was a court wedding consisting of Daniel and his lawyer, me and my lawyer, and my stepsister, Grace, as a witness. No flowers. No guests. No emotions. The judge read the vows in a dull, rehearsed tone, and I signed the marriage certificate with hands that barely stopped trembling. Daniel, on the other hand, looked calm…too calm. Like a man who just closed a business deal.Afterwards, we posed for some photos that the court clerk took. Daniel placed his hand lightly on my waist, and the moment the camera flashed, he pulled away."Congratulations, Mrs Sutherland" Grace said softly, pulling me into a hug. I could feel the hesitation in her voice, the unspoken questions in her eyes. But she didn’t ask any. She simply squeezed my hand and stepped aside.I knew she was concerned about me and wanted to know if I

~DANIEL~ Last night, before I left the company, I had called and instructed my private investigator to find out everything about Jessica Adams. And within an hour later, he had sent everything I needed to know about her to my phone.Aged twenty four.Lost her birth mom when she's ten from a critical illness.Studied business management and commerce at Minot state university.Graduated at the age of twenty two.Graduated with a first class honor.Worked in a few places after graduation but went back to being unemployed again.Lost her dad from a car accident.Has a Stepmom and stepsister. Her boyfriend of three years just ended things with her.Stepmom is gravely in and her life is in danger.I got interested in the part where I read that her stepmom is sick.Poor girl! ~JESSICA~The hospital smelled of antiseptic and worry. I ran through the double doors, my shoes hitting against the cold tiles, heart thudding wildly in my chest.“Miss Adams?” a nurse called, waving me over.“Yes….I'm here. What's going on?” I asked, almost out of breath.“It’s your stepmom,” she said gently. “Her condition worsened. The doctor wants to speak with you.”I didn’t realize I’d been holding my breath until I was ushered into a quiet consultation room, where Dr. Spence stood waiting. His expression told me everything.“She’s stable for now,” he began, “but Jessica, the time is running out.”I sat down hard.“I’ve contacted every possible agency,” he said softly. “But the procedure... it’s expensive. You’ll need to make arrangements soon, or we may have to consider transferring her to public care.”No. Not Sarah. Not in a system that would treat her like a number.“I’ll get the money,” I said, voice cracking. “I promise.”“Be fast about it. Take a

~DANIEL~I slammed the door after Miss Adams bolted from the office, her retreating figure disappearing into the night. My hand remained on the doorknob, frozen, as I tried to process what just happened. How dare she run out like that?I strode back to my desk, every step laced with anger. I should fire her. On the spot. No one—no one—had ever walked out on me like that, not without consequences. But as I sat down and stared at the abandoned reports she was supposed to organize, I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone and make the call to HR.Something about the look on her face… something urgent. It wasn't a rebellion. It was fear and desperation.I sighed and leaned back, rubbing my temples. Then came the knock.A soft rap on the door before it creaked open. My lawyer, Edward Lane, stepped in, his salt-and-pepper hair glinting under the light. He looked like he had aged a decade in the last two days.“You should have called to let me know that you're c

  • Bound by a billionaire    The second encounter

~JESSICA~The air in the office seemed to grow colder by the second. His piercing gaze pinned me to the spot, leaving no room for escape. I clenched the strap of my bag tightly, my mind scrambling for something—anything—to say.Daniel Sutherland. The man whose sharp suit only emphasized his raw authority. His broad shoulders filled the space with an intimidating presence, and the angular features of his face radiated a quiet fury. How had I not realized it sooner?“Miss Adams, wasn’t it?” he said, his tone clipped, dragging me out of my panic-induced haze.“Yes, sir,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. His lips curved into a sardonic smile, but there was no amusement in his eyes. “Of all the applicants in the world, fate really had to pick you.”I swallowed hard. “Sir, if you’ll let me explain….”“Explain?” He raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms over his chest. “Oh, please, by all means. Explain how slapping the CEO of Sutherland Enterprises qualifies y

  • Bound by a billionaire    Hope at last

~JESSICA~ “Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” Grace's alarm rang on a Monday morning and I groaned out loudly in frustration. It's an alarm she set to enable her to wake up early and prepare for school.I just started sleeping after staying all night applying for jobs and now, the alarm is disturbing my sleep.“Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” the alarm rang again and I felt like smashing the alarm clock to the wall. I mean, I just started sleeping and this alarm chose the right time to wake me up.Grace was still fast asleep. She's sleeping through the alarm and it got me pissed. How dare she sleep through the alarm she set herself while I can't sleep??And so, I tapped her and shook her on the bed roughly.“Get your ass off the bed and go prepare for school” I yelled. “And oh, please do well to off that alarm or else I smash it to the wall”She stuck out her tongue sleepily at me and stretched her hands to turn off the alarm, then resumed sleeping again.I sighed, she's always lik
