~DANIEL~
Last night, before I left the company, I had called and instructed my private investigator to find out everything about Jessica Adams.
And within an hour later, he had sent everything I needed to know about her to my phone.
Aged twenty four.
Lost her birth mom when she's ten from a critical illness.
Studied business management and commerce at Minot state university.
Graduated at the age of twenty two.
Graduated with a first class honor.
Worked in a few places after graduation but went back to being unemployed again.
Lost her dad from a car accident.
Has a Stepmom and stepsister.
Her boyfriend of three years just ended things with her.
Stepmom is gravely in and her life is in danger.
I got interested in the part where I read that her stepmom is sick.
Poor girl! She's been through a lot.
Witnessing her mother's and father's death must have been so heartbreaking for her, and now her stepmom is seriously ill too.
“Find out the name of the hospital where the stepmom is being treated. I want to know the doctor in charge of her treatment” I had texted and sent to my private investigator.
Within a few minutes, my answers popped up on my screen.
Royal hospital.
Doctor Spencer Tyack.
Wow! Doctor Spencer was a very good friend of mine.
And so, I picked up my phone to call him. He answered almost immediately.
“Hello to the billionaire CEO of Sutherland enterprises” he said cheerfully and I laughed.
“Hi to the famous Doctor Spencer Tyack. I'm sorry to call you this late, but I need a favour from you”
And so I had gotten the full medical condition and reports of Jessica's stepmom and the medical bills, which was a very expensive one, of course, to Jessica.
But to me, I could pull out the money without even blinking an eye.
An idea struck me then. I would use her stepmom's illness to make an offer she wouldn't resist.
I knew I was being heartless, but I had no choice. I won't let that contract slip past me.
***
This morning, I came to the company earlier than usual. Even earlier than most of my staff.
I knew when Jessica resumed work. I knew when she went to her office and sat on her desk and began working.
I was watching every one of her movements from the camera in my office.
I was watching the way she's working so hard and very focused on the reports she was typing.
She's adjusting her glasses at intervals but that hasn't stopped her from typing, sorting out and arranging files, and being so dedicated to her work.
She was what I wanted.
A hardworking, focused and business minded woman.
If I had doubts before, watching her now cleared the doubts.
And so I painfully waited for the time I felt comfortable to make my proposition.
It's almost dismissal time before I finally gathered the courage to ring the intercom and ask her to come to my office.
When I finally asked her to marry me, her already stressed out and swollen face and the little color in her face faded completely as she absorbed what I just said.
She was shocked and I could understand why.
She's overwhelmed by everything happening. Everything was happening too fast for her.
She just started working for me yesterday and today, I was asking her to marry me.
I noticed she felt furious when I made her know I was aware of her stepmom's condition.
She had every right to be upset. It's unprofessional of a doctor to release a patient's information without the consent of the guidance.
But because of how close I was to Doctor Spencer and because I requested it as a favour, he had to do it, not before making me promise that I didn't mean any harm.
I told her why I feel the contract marriage is a win-win for both of us and stretched out my hand for an agreement, but she left it hanging.
“I'll think about this, Sir” she said and left the office with the folder in her hands.
I tuck my hand back in my pocket.
I wasn't mad at her. I wasn't expecting her to accept so fast.
From her personality and character, it would have been weird if she had readily accepted.
But I was so convinced that she'll finally accept my proposition.
~JESSICA~
I sat frozen in my seat long after I left Daniel's office.
Marry him?
Was this a joke? Some sick power move?
This was the third time I'm seeing him in my life, and I don't even know anything about him—except that he's the popular billionaire CEO of Sutherland enterprises, and he wants me to marry him?
A fake marriage? A contract marriage??
He wants me to enslave myself in some marriage while I am still dealing with heartbreak and betrayal from Albert??
I looked down at the folder again. Sarah's name stared up at me like a lifeline—and a chain.
The bills were real. I didn’t need to read them to know that. I'd lived them. Watched them pile up on the kitchen counter while I juggle two jobs and still came up short.
And now, out of nowhere, my boss—the cold, sarcastic, workaholic, detached man wanted me to marry him?
A year. A year of pretending. Of smiling for cameras and faking a life that wasn’t mine.
For money.
For Sarah and Grace.
I removed my glasses and buried my face in my hands out of frustration.
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
I came to this job to build something, not trade myself in like a pawn. Not become some accessory to help Daniel Sutherland close a billion-dollar deal.
But then... What choice did I have?
Grace’s treatment would cost more than I could ever earn as a secretary—not in years. And even if I did walk away from this job, there were no other offers waiting. No miracles on the horizon.
I wiped my eyes and looked at myself in the small mirror on my table.
My reflection stared back, tired and raw.
I remembered the way Daniel had said it. No romance. No emotions. Just business. Just a year. Like signing a lease on a condo.
The man clearly didn’t believe in love. I doubted he even believed in people.
But he was offering me something no one else could—a chance to save my stepmom To survive.
I hated him for putting me in this position.
But I hated fate more—for making it feel like my only way out.
I stared at my hands for a long time, wore my glasses back then I pulled out a piece of paper and wrote a list.
PROS:
– Sarah’s medical bills: covered.
– Private care. Better doctors.
– Financial cushion.
– Freedom from debt.
– It’s temporary. Just a year.
CONS:
– Marrying my boss.
– Faking a life. Lying to the world.
– Getting trapped.
– Losing control.
– Getting hurt.
I bit my lip.
I didn’t trust Daniel Sutherland.
But I trusted the system even less.
Maybe... just maybe... I could do this.
If I played it smart. If I kept my guard up. If I remembered exactly what this was—a business transaction, not a fairytale.
I glanced toward his office, then slowly stood up.
I had a decision to make.
And I already knew what it was.
~JESSICA~ The wedding was the Saturday of the same week.Daniel was so fast about everything. It was as if he's scared I would change my mind.It was a court wedding consisting of Daniel and his lawyer, me and my lawyer, and my stepsister, Grace, as a witness. No flowers. No guests. No emotions. The judge read the vows in a dull, rehearsed tone, and I signed the marriage certificate with hands that barely stopped trembling. Daniel, on the other hand, looked calm…too calm. Like a man who just closed a business deal.Afterwards, we posed for some photos that the court clerk took. Daniel placed his hand lightly on my waist, and the moment the camera flashed, he pulled away."Congratulations, Mrs Sutherland" Grace said softly, pulling me into a hug. I could feel the hesitation in her voice, the unspoken questions in her eyes. But she didn’t ask any. She simply squeezed my hand and stepped aside.I knew she was concerned about me and wanted to know if I
~JESSICA~I had rehearsed my response a hundred different ways—some polite, others laced with fury. But none of them felt right.Because nothing about this was right.Still, I walked into his office, spine straight and palms sweating.Daniel looked up immediately. As always, unreadable. Calm. Too calm.“I assume you’ve made a decision,” he said, closing his laptop.I stood in front of his desk, holding his gaze. Then I swallowed hard and long.“I’ll do it.”I breathed out.His expression didn’t change, but something shifted in the air between us. A beat passed.“Under one condition,” I added, voice firm.“I’m listening.”“I want full coverage for Sarah. Her treatments, her therapy—everything. And a lump sum at the end of a year. Enough for me to start over.”Daniel stood slowly, his hands in his pockets. “Done.”I blinked. “You’re not even going to negotiate?”“I don’t waste time haggling over what I’ve already decided.”Of course not. I bit back the urge to

~JESSICA~The hospital smelled of antiseptic and worry. I ran through the double doors, my shoes hitting against the cold tiles, heart thudding wildly in my chest.“Miss Adams?” a nurse called, waving me over.“Yes….I'm here. What's going on?” I asked, almost out of breath.“It’s your stepmom,” she said gently. “Her condition worsened. The doctor wants to speak with you.”I didn’t realize I’d been holding my breath until I was ushered into a quiet consultation room, where Dr. Spence stood waiting. His expression told me everything.“She’s stable for now,” he began, “but Jessica, the time is running out.”I sat down hard.“I’ve contacted every possible agency,” he said softly. “But the procedure... it’s expensive. You’ll need to make arrangements soon, or we may have to consider transferring her to public care.”No. Not Sarah. Not in a system that would treat her like a number.“I’ll get the money,” I said, voice cracking. “I promise.”“Be fast about it. Take a
~DANIEL~I slammed the door after Miss Adams bolted from the office, her retreating figure disappearing into the night. My hand remained on the doorknob, frozen, as I tried to process what just happened. How dare she run out like that?I strode back to my desk, every step laced with anger. I should fire her. On the spot. No one—no one—had ever walked out on me like that, not without consequences. But as I sat down and stared at the abandoned reports she was supposed to organize, I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone and make the call to HR.Something about the look on her face… something urgent. It wasn't a rebellion. It was fear and desperation.I sighed and leaned back, rubbing my temples. Then came the knock.A soft rap on the door before it creaked open. My lawyer, Edward Lane, stepped in, his salt-and-pepper hair glinting under the light. He looked like he had aged a decade in the last two days.“You should have called to let me know that you're c
~JESSICA~The air in the office seemed to grow colder by the second. His piercing gaze pinned me to the spot, leaving no room for escape. I clenched the strap of my bag tightly, my mind scrambling for something—anything—to say.Daniel Sutherland. The man whose sharp suit only emphasized his raw authority. His broad shoulders filled the space with an intimidating presence, and the angular features of his face radiated a quiet fury. How had I not realized it sooner?“Miss Adams, wasn’t it?” he said, his tone clipped, dragging me out of my panic-induced haze.“Yes, sir,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. His lips curved into a sardonic smile, but there was no amusement in his eyes. “Of all the applicants in the world, fate really had to pick you.”I swallowed hard. “Sir, if you’ll let me explain….”“Explain?” He raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms over his chest. “Oh, please, by all means. Explain how slapping the CEO of Sutherland Enterprises qualifies y
~JESSICA~ “Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” Grace's alarm rang on a Monday morning and I groaned out loudly in frustration. It's an alarm she set to enable her to wake up early and prepare for school.I just started sleeping after staying all night applying for jobs and now, the alarm is disturbing my sleep.“Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” the alarm rang again and I felt like smashing the alarm clock to the wall. I mean, I just started sleeping and this alarm chose the right time to wake me up.Grace was still fast asleep. She's sleeping through the alarm and it got me pissed. How dare she sleep through the alarm she set herself while I can't sleep??And so, I tapped her and shook her on the bed roughly.“Get your ass off the bed and go prepare for school” I yelled. “And oh, please do well to off that alarm or else I smash it to the wall”She stuck out her tongue sleepily at me and stretched her hands to turn off the alarm, then resumed sleeping again.I sighed, she's always lik
~JESSICA~I sat in the hospital waiting room, trying to hold myself together. My stepmother, Sarah, was lying in a hospital bed, fighting for her life. The events at Albert’s house replayed in my mind like a broken record. I had lost him, my best friend, and whatever shred of dignity I had left. But I couldn’t fall apart—not yet. Sarah needed me.The weight if everything pressed down on me and because I was feeling really sleepy and tired, mentally and emotionally stressed, and didn't want to think about anything for the moment, I forced myself to sleep.“Miss Adams?”“Miss Adams??” I heard someone call tentatively and my head shot up immediately. I blinked away the heaviness of sleep as I adjusted my glasses and stared sleepily at the nurse standing in front of me.“Miss Adams??” The nurse called again.“Yes, I am Jessica Adams” I replied and she made a brief nod.“The doctor wants to see you in his office” she informed me.“Sure, let's go” I replied and adju
~JESSICA~ The rays of the sunlight entered the room and shone brightly on my face. Silently, I cussed out Grace for opening the curtains while I'm still sleeping.I opened my eyes and closed them immediately as the sunlight rays almost blinded me. Weakly, I drew the curtains close and sat up before opening my eyes again. It was then my hangover hit me hard and I quickly held my head in pain. My head was banging so bad. It's as if drummers were playing loud and hard drums on my head.“Arghhh. My head hurts” I groaned out in pain, still holding my head in my palm.I couldn't even turn my head properly without feeling pain. Grace wasn't in the room either to help out.Yes, we share a room.Thankfully, I saw a glass of clean water and some pills on the table beside the bed. Grace must have kept it there. She's such a sweetheart!I painfully drew closer and closer to the table still sitting on the bed, till my hands were finally able to reach the water
