Chapter Sixty Six

Jade’s POV

When Margaret told me Sheila was downstairs, my first reaction wasn’t shock, it was irritation.

Sheila never visited without a reason.

She never came to “check on me.” She never came to “bond.” She never came because she missed me.

She came to measure.

To compare.

To remind herself she was still the prettier sister. The smarter one. The one who should’ve gotten the better life.

Only this time… she was late.

Because I already had it.

I found Killian in his office ups

Chapter Seventy FourJade's povKillian’s mouth was still on mine when I heard it again.A knock.Sharp. Polite. Annoyingly timed.Killian didn’t stop kissing me immediately. If anything, he deepened it,like he wanted the world to know it could wait. Then he finally pulled away, his lips brushing mine one last time before his gaze lifted toward the door, eyes dark with irritation.“Ignore it,” I whispered, breathless. His jaw flexed.“They’ve knocked twice,” he muttered. “If I ignore it again, I’ll end up killing someone in a resort owned by people I might need.”I let out a soft laugh.Killian stepped away reluctantly, his shirt half-unbuttoned, his hair slightly disheveled, his presence still filling the room like a storm that hadn’t decided whether to rain or burn.He walked to the door.I stayed on the bed, pulling the blanket higher over my chest even though it was pointless. The way he had been looking at me… the way he had touched me…It already felt like my body was exposed.K

Chapter Seventy ThreeJade’s POVKillian didn’t speak much after that. Not because he was angry. Not because he was bothered. But because he had this quiet, dangerous calm about him, like he had already decided Sheila didn’t deserve another second of his attention and somehow, that was worse.Because it made me feel…protected.Like no matter what anyone said, he would always place himself between me and the world. We walked into the restaurant like nothing had happened.Like I hadn’t just been insulted.Like he hadn’t just called my stepsister garbage with the straightest face imaginable. The hostess greeted him with a smile so wide it almost looked painful.“Mr. Montclair,” she said, practically glowing. “We’ve prepared your table.”Killian nodded once, barely acknowledging her excitement. His hand stayed on my lower back as he guided me forward, like I was the only thing in the room worth touching.I should’ve felt awkward. But I didn’t.I felt like a wife. Not the contract kind.Th

Chapter Seventy twoJade’s POVThe building felt different when I walked into it this time. Two weeks ago, I walked into that boardroom with fear hidden under lipstick and confidence forced into my spine.Today, I walked in with a folder in my hand and my head held high. Not because I wasn’t nervous.I was.But because nervousness didn’t mean weakness. It meant I cared.Killian’s driver dropped me off at the entrance, and as soon as I stepped into the lobby, people looked. Not the same way they used to.Not curious glances that asked who is she?But looks said that’s her.The woman who had stood in front of the board. The CEO’s wife. The woman who dared to pitch.I hated that part of it.The part where my name wasn’t mine alone. But I refused to let it shrink me.I walked into the elevator and rode straight up, my heartbeat steady but loud in my chest. The directors’ meeting wasn’t in the main boardroom. It was in a smaller conference room on the top floor.More private.More serious.

  • Bound by paper    After the Applause

Chapter Seventy OneJade’s POVThe ride home was quieter than I expected. Not uncomfortable. Not awkward.Just… heavy.Like the air inside the car had changed after the boardroom. After I stood in front of people who could buy buildings with pocket change and somehow made them listen.I kept replaying everything in my head.Every word.Every pause.Every question that almost made me stutter.Killian sat beside me, one arm resting casually on the leather seat, the other holding his phone as he scrolled through emails like the world hadn’t just shaken my entire existence. But I noticed the little things. The way his knee brushed mine occasionally. The way his gaze flickered to me when he thought I wasn’t watching.Like he was checking if I was still breathing.Or maybe…Like he was checking if I was still real.I exhaled softly and leaned my head back against the seat.“You’re quiet,” Killian said suddenly. His voice was calm, but his eyes were on me now.I blinked. “I’m thinking.”He h

  • Bound by paper    The Silence That Followed

Chapter SeventyJade’s POVThe silence after my last slide felt endless. The projector light dimmed slightly behind me, the screen still showing my logo like it was begging for approval.I stood there with my hands clasped in front of me, posture straight, chin lifted, because if I showed fear now, they would smell it.And these people…These people didn’t respect fear.Across the table, the board members stared at me like they were dissecting my skin, my voice, my confidence.Like they weren’t just judging my company. They were judging whether I deserved to dream.Mrs. Montclair sat at the far end of the table, her expression perfectly composed. Not proud. Not pleased. Not impressed.Just unreadable.Killian sat beside her, his posture calm, his face blank, but his eyes…His eyes were on me.Steady.Firm.Like he had already decided I would survive this room.A man cleared his throat. He was older, had grey hair, sharp eyes, and an expensive watch. He folded his hands together.“Mrs M

Chapter Sixty Nine Jade’s POVKillian’s hand remained on my waist as we walked toward his office. The house was quiet now.Aurelia was upstairs.Margaret was somewhere in the kitchen. It was just us.He opened the door to his office and stepped aside, letting me enter first like a gentleman. But the look in his eyes said he wasn’t feeling gentlemanly at all.I walked toward the desk, pretending I wasn’t aware of him watching every sway of my hips.My laptop sat exactly where I had left it earlier, beside neatly arranged documents and my handwritten notes.Killian moved behind me, his hands sliding into his pockets as he leaned slightly against the desk.“Show me,” he said simply.I opened the file, clicking through the documents.“It’s not complete yet,” I warned quickly. “It’s just drafts and outlines,”“Jade,” he cut in, voice calm but firm.I paused. He rarely used my name like that. Not playful. Not teasing.Just… direct.I swallowed. Then I turned the laptop slightly toward him.

Chapter twenty nine Killians povThe room was silent now.Too silent. The call had ended minutes ago, but the tension it brought with it hadn’t left.It lingered. In the air.In my chest. On the way I hadn’t moved from where I stood.I rarely lost control of situations. It wasn’t just discipline.

Chapter twenty eight Jade’s POV The drive to the restaurant was short, or it felt like. Killian opened the door for me and helped me step out. That wasn't helping my current situation. When we got in, I immediately understood what he meant by private lunch. The entire top floor had been res
