Odessa pov

Rule one: don't smile at anyone in that hall unless they smile first.

Rule two: don't talk unless someone talks to you, and even then, keep it short.

Rule three, the one that actually mattered tonight: no matter what happens, don't let them see you flinch.

I'd been running through the list since I got dressed, and by the time I reached the doors of the Assembly Hall, the words didn't even sound like words anymore. Just noise in my own head, keeping the real noise out.

The hall was packed already. Candlelight, cold stone, that particular hush that only happens when a hundred vampires are all pretending not to watch each other. I felt the whispers start before I even got three steps in.

‘Ravencourt.’

Someone always said it like that. Like it was an insult they didn't need to finish.

I kept my chin up and my eyes forward and found the spot I always found, near the back wall, close enough to the exit that I could leave the second this was over. Four years of practice had made me good at this. Invisible. A girl nobody had a reason to look twice at.

It worked right up until Julian found me.

"There you are." He slid in next to me like he had every right to, because as far as the Vale was concerned, he did. "I saved you a seat up front."

"I like it back here."

"You like disappearing." He said it warmly, like it was a joke, but his eyes did a slow pass over my dress, my hair, checking me the way you'd check a report before you signed off on it. "Come on, Odessa. People are going to talk if my future wife is hiding in the back like she's got something to be ashamed of."

"People already talk," I said. "That ship sailed when I was twelve."

Something flickered across his face, gone fast. He didn't like when I brought that up.

"Just… sit with me tonight," he said, softer now, and reached for my hand like that settled it.

I didn't have time to pull away before the horn sounded, deep and low, rattling my teeth, and the whole hall went still at once. Corvin.

He came in through the front like he owned the air in the room, which, in every way that mattered, he did. Tall, gray-eyed, that unhurried walk that made you want to apologize for existing in his path. Magistrate. Head of the council. The man who'd stood over my parents' grave and called their deaths ‘a necessary correction’ without so much as blinking.

"Tonight we renew what our ancestors built," he said, and his voice carried without him raising it at all. "A hundred years of peace between our house and Ironhollow's, bought in blood, kept through discipline."

Discipline. That was Corvin's favorite word. I learned a long time ago it usually meant ‘fear.’

His gaze swept the room as he talked, and for one horrible second it landed square on me. I made myself hold still. Rule three.

"Some bloodlines," he said, "remind us what happens when that discipline fails."

He didn't say my name. I felt every head in the room turn a fraction toward me anyway, and my face went hot even as the rest of me went cold.

Julian's hand tightened on mine. "Ignore him," he murmured, like that was easy.

I was still trying to breathe normally when the side doors opened and the temperature in the room actually dropped.

Ironhollow.

You could always tell when the wolves walked in. It wasn't a smell, not exactly, more like a shift in the air, something heavier moving through it. Conversations thinned out. Backs straightened. Even Corvin's mouth went tight for half a second before he smoothed it out again.

Their alpha's son came in first.

I didn't know his name yet. I just knew I felt him before I saw him, which didn't make any sense and irritated me immediately for that exact reason. He was tall in that way that took up more space than it should, jaw set like he would rather be anywhere else, eyes doing a slow, unimpressed sweep of the room like he was cataloguing exits, not making friends.

Then those eyes landed on me.

I don't know what he saw. I don't know what I did with my face. But something in his expression snagged, just for a second, like he hit a word he didn't recognize in a sentence he otherwise understood perfectly.

"Problem?" I said, before I could stop myself. Rule two, gone, just like that.

His eyebrows went up. "You always talk to strangers like that?"

"Only the ones staring."

A couple of people near us actually turned to look. Julian's hand went rigid around mine.

"Odessa," he said under his breath, a warning.

The wolf… I still didn't have his name, huffed out something that wasn't quite a laugh. "She's got a mouth on her."

"She's ‘right here,’" I said.

"I noticed." He said it flat, no smile, and somehow that was worse than if he was smirking. Like he wasn't playing a game at all. Like he genuinely couldn't figure out what I was.

I felt something twist low in my chest, hot and sharp, the kind of feeling I usually smothered before it got anywhere near the surface. My fingers prickled. The wine glass on the table beside me gave a thin, high crack, a hairline fracture running straight up the side, and nobody noticed except him.

His head tilted. Like a dog catching a sound nobody else could hear.

I yanked my hand out of Julian's grip and shoved the glass out of easy sight, heart slamming so hard I was sure he could hear that too.

"Odessa." Julian again, quieter, more urgent. "What was that?"

"Nothing." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Static electricity."

The wolf didn't say anything. He just kept looking at me like I was a puzzle with a piece missing, and for one horrible, electric second, I thought he was going to say something out loud, right there in front of Corvin and Julian and everyone.

He didn't get the chance.

The doors at the far end of the hall slammed open so hard they cracked against the stone, and a guard staggered in with blood soaking through his uniform, one arm hanging wrong at his side.

"Border," he gasped, barely upright. "They found a scout, near the northern line, she's drained, she's dead.."

The whole hall exploded at once.

Vale members surging to their feet, shouting, someone knocking a chair over, Corvin's voice cutting through it all sharp as a blade. Across the room, Ironhollow's wolves went rigid in a way that had nothing to do with fear, hands curling into fists, low growls I felt more than heard rolling under all the noise.

"That's your people's doing," someone near me snarled toward the wolves.

"Watch your mouth," came the answer, low and dangerous, and I realized it was him, the one who'd just been staring at me like I was a mystery he hadn't solved yet, now standing between his pack and the accusation like a wall.

Guards moved to seal the exits. Somebody screamed. Julian grabbed my arm and started pulling me back through the crowd, and I let him, because staying still in the middle of that felt like standing in the surf right before a wave hit.

I looked back once.

Corvin wasn't shouting orders. He wasn't reacting at all, really. He was standing perfectly still in the center of the chaos, gray eyes fixed on me across the entire length of that hall, and on his face was something far worse than panic.

He looked satisfied.

Odessa's POVThe cracks didn't stop at the edges of the symbol. They kept spreading, faster now, branching out across the stone floor in jagged lines that reminded me of frost creeping over glass, except each fracture glowed faintly gold at its edges, the same color as the light still pulsing beneath my palms. I felt something building behind my ribs that had nothing to do with pain anymore."Stop this," Corvin said again, his voice had lost the smooth, unhurried quality it always carried. "You're going to hurt yourself. You have no idea how to control something this size.""Maybe I don't need to control it," I said, my own voice sounding strange to my ears, steadier than it had any right to be given everything happening in my chest. "Maybe I just need to stop letting you control it instead."The floor beneath me shuddered.I felt the pressure that had been crushing my lungs for what felt like hours finally give way completely, not draining out of me the way Corvin had intended, but r

Odessa's POVRonan didn't get the chance to move. The gold light beneath Corvin's feet pulsed once, and the hand he lifted toward Ronan barely looked like a threat at all, more like a man swatting at something irritating rather than a man wielding actual power. But the moment his fingers curled, Ronan's whole body locked mid-stride, one foot still raised off the ground, his arms frozen at his sides like something invisible had reached into him and stilled every muscle at once."What did you do to him?" I said, my voice cracking, the words came out sharper than the pain in my chest should have allowed."A simple restraint," Corvin said, unbothered, watching Ronan's frozen struggle with the same clinical interest he'd shown Julian's body minutes earlier. "He'll feel nothing beyond the indignity of it, provided he stops fighting."Ronan's eyes strained toward me, furious, helpless, his jaw the only part of him still capable of movement, working hard against whatever held the rest of him

Odessa's POVCorvin knelt again, his palm returning to the carved symbol beneath his feet like he simply paused a task rather than watched a man die inches away from him."Ronan," I gasped, some instinct warning me a half second before the pressure in my chest doubled. "Don't let him…"The words cut off in a scream. It hit without warning, sharper than anything before it, like every nerve in my body had been set alight at once. My back arched off the stone floor, my hands clawing uselessly against nothing, and the sound that tore out of me didn't feel like it belonged to a person anymore."Stop it!" Ronan roared, and something in the room actually seemed to bend under the force of his voice."I'm simply finishing what I started," Corvin said, calm even now, even with me screaming on the floor a few feet from him. "You interrupted a delicate process, Mr. Kade. Delicate processes rarely appreciate interruption.""I said stop!"Ronan didn't shift. I don't think he even considered it. He

Odessa's POVIt didn't look like the fights I already watched Ronan win. Those had rhythm to them, exchanges, moments where either side might have turned the tide with the right instinct at the right second. This wasn't that.Julian never had a chance to let go.Ronan's claws caught him across the throat before Julian's mind fully processed what was closing in on him, his eyes still wide with that same desperate, cracked hope, his fingers still locked tight around my wrist even as his own blood began spilling dark and fast down the front of his ruined jacket."No," I heard myself say, the word came out too late, too weak, swallowed by the crushing pressure still pinning me to the stone floor.Julian's grip on my wrist finally loosened, not from any decision, just his body giving out all at once, his legs folding beneath him as he collapsed sideways, away from me, his hand finally slipping free.He hit the ground hard.Nobody

Odessa's POVCorvin opened his mouth, already shaping the cold, final repetition he intended to offer Ronan, some renewed confession delivered with that same maddening calm he carried through every other conversation we ever had.The doorway exploded a second time before he got the chance.Julian staggered through the wreckage of the first broken door, stumbling over a chunk of splintered frame, his jacket torn at the shoulder, his hair a mess, his eyes wild in a way I never once seen from him. Behind him, I caught a glimpse of Briar shouting something at Micah, both of them still braced against the flood of enforcers pushing hard from the corridor, but neither had managed to stop Julian from slipping past them entirely."Julian," Corvin said, and something sharp finally cut through his composure. "This is hardly the moment.""I read it," Julian said, his voice cracking, breathless, like he'd run the entire distance without stopp

Odessa's POV"Contained," Ronan repeated, his voice dangerously flat. "That's your word for whatever you're doing to her right now?""It's the accurate word," Corvin said, unbothered, straightening his sleeves like a man finishing a minor errand rather than standing over a girl crumpled on the floor. "Though I understand it may not carry the same weight to you as it does to me.""Ronan," I managed, forcing the word out through gritted teeth, the pressure in my chest still crushing, still pulling something vital further out of reach with every passing second. "Don't listen to him. Just get me out.""I intend to," Ronan said, though he hadn't moved, his eyes locked on Corvin like he was measuring the exact distance he needed to close before the man could react."You should know something first," Corvin said, and something in his tone shifted, almost conversational, like he had all the time in the world despite the chaos still audible just beyond that shattered doorway."I don't care wha
