Chapter 1: Before the Darkness

The village of Briar Hollow sat quietly between rolling green hills and ancient forests.

It was small enough that everyone knew one another, yet large enough for merchants to pass through on their journeys between kingdoms.

At the edge of the village stood a modest stone-and-wood cottage with a small shop attached to its front.

A wooden sign hung above the entrance.

Willow & Thorn Apothecary

Inside, shelves overflowed with bundles of dried herbs, glass jars filled with colorful petals, medicinal roots, beeswax candles, and fragrant teas.

The shop belonged to the Ashbourne family.

To outsiders, they were nothing more than poor merchants trying to survive.

Only they knew the truth.

Magic flowed quietly through their blood.

Not enough to attract attention.

Not enough to earn power.

But enough to keep old traditions alive.

Ten-year-old Elara Ashbourne darted between the shelves with a basket in her hands.

Her silver-brown hair bounced as she ran.

"Elara!" her mother called from behind the counter.

"You'll break something."

Elara laughed.

"No, I won't!"

A moment later she nearly knocked over a jar of dried lavender.

Her mother sighed.

"You nearly did."

The girl grinned sheepishly.

Her father chuckled from the doorway.

"Let her be. She's only a child."

Elara immediately ran to him.

"Father!"

He caught her before she crashed into him.

"Did you bring the honey?"

"I did."

"Can I have some?"

"No."

"Just a little?"

"No."

"A tiny bit?"

"No."

Elara dramatically groaned.

Her parents laughed.

The warm sound filled the shop.

It was a simple life.

A poor life.

But a happy one.

At least for now.

A small cough echoed from upstairs.

The laughter immediately faded.

Elara's smile disappeared.

Her father lowered his gaze.

Her mother clenched her hands.

Another cough followed.

Then another.

Without hesitation, Elara rushed upstairs.

The small bedroom at the end of the hallway belonged to her younger sister.

Eight-year-old Lyra Ashbourne sat beneath a blanket.

Her pale face contrasted sharply against her dark hair.

She looked fragile.

Like a flower surviving a harsh winter.

Yet her golden eyes brightened when she saw her sister.

"Elara."

Elara sat beside her.

"How are you feeling today?"

"Better."

It was a lie.

They both knew it.

Lyra had been sick since birth.

No healer could identify the illness.

No potion could cure it.

No witch could remove it.

Each year her condition worsened.

But she always smiled.

Always.

"I'm going to help Mother in the shop today," Lyra said.

"No."

"I can."

"No."

"I can sit."

"No."

Lyra pouted.

Elara crossed her arms.

"You're resting."

"You sound like Mother."

"Good."

Lyra giggled.

For a moment, her cough vanished.

For a moment, she looked healthy.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Elara would later realize that happiness often announces its departure with moments like these.

Moments that seem ordinary until they become memories.

That evening, the family gathered around a small wooden table.

The meal consisted of vegetable stew, fresh bread, and honey from a local farmer.

Nothing luxurious.

Nothing grand.

Yet it was enough.

Her father told stories.

Her mother laughed.

Lyra smiled.

And Elara listened.

Outside, the moon rose above Briar Hollow.

Its pale light spilled across the village.

Most people saw only a moon.

Elara felt something else.

A strange pull.

A whisper she could never explain.

Sometimes she dreamed of wolves running through endless forests.

Sometimes she dreamed of silver eyes staring at her from the darkness.

Sometimes she woke with scratches on her arms she could not remember receiving.

Her parents always dismissed it.

"Just dreams," they said.

But deep down, Elara knew they were lying.

They were hiding something.

Something important.

Something dangerous.

That night, after everyone had gone to bed, her parents remained awake.

Elara secretly listened from the stairs.

"We're running out of time," her mother whispered.

"I know."

"The seal is weakening."

"I know."

"What if she awakens early?"

A long silence followed.

Then her father's voice came.

Heavy with fear.

"Then the vampire king will find her."

Elara froze.

Vampire king?

She had heard stories.

Everyone had.

Ancient creatures who ruled from distant kingdoms.

Monsters who lived forever.

Beings powerful enough to destroy entire nations.

Surely her father wasn't talking about one of them.

"The debt collectors returned," her mother said quietly.

"They want payment."

"We don't have it."

"What if they discover who she is?"

Another silence.

Then her father spoke words that would unknowingly shape Elara's future.

"If they discover her power, they'll try to claim her."

Far away, beyond the forests and mountains, within a palace carved from black stone, crimson eyes slowly opened.

A man sat upon a throne.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Immortal.

The First Blood Vampire.

The ruler feared by kings and monsters alike.

And somehow...

His gaze drifted toward the distant moon.

Toward a little girl he had never met.

Toward Elara Ashbourne.

The future that awaited them had already begun to move.
