"Charles, please hide Astrid. Please, protect her at all cost," my mother said to my father's Beta.
I didn't have any idea what was happening. It was a peaceful night in the middle of the woods, in my father's pack, no other than the great Red Moon Pack. It was called "great" due we've always won in every battle plus the healthy economy of our pack.
One of the large income shares was coming from agriculture, and my father always focused on that field to nurture it more. His goal is no one would die from hunger and that everyone will eat a fair amount of food every day. That's the reason why the pack became great because the people always did their best to repay my father. After all, my father himself takes care of them very well. I could say he's a true leader.
I simply looked outside the window. I could say there's nothing wrong because all that I could hear was the sound of nature.
Bugs, night owls, and nearby rivers make a sound.
A cold breeze of the night makes the trees and falling leaves dance.
The bright rays of the full moon in the evening sky show the beauty of the forest.
It was so peaceful.
But, from what I've heard and seen how my mother is restless and afraid of something, it seems that something bad will happen.
"Mother... Tell me. What is it?" an eighteen-year-old me asked my mother in a worried voice.
My heart started to beat faster when she didn't utter any words. She only stared at me, and I could see her holding back her tears.
I gulped hard as I felt my heart was going to explode. I didn't like this kind of feeling. It was so foreign to me. I am always confident, and my parents showered me with their love. So, worrying is unfamiliar to me.
"Mother... Don't make me afraid," I said in a cracked voice when fear had already kicked in inside my chest. I ran into her and hugged her tightly.
At the moment I heard her heart beating faster like mine, I bit my lower lip.
So, it is true. There is something bad happening. I wonder what it is.
But it seems I am not ready to hear it.
Am afraid to hear it.
"Sweetie, listen to me." She cupped both of my cheeks and stared into my eyes lovingly.
"I love you. We love you, okay?" she said. The emotions that she was holding back earlier were broken when tears flowed in her cheeks.
Why does it feel like she's saying her last goodbye?
"Mother, stop saying that!" I couldn't help but raise my voice. Not because I am angry at her. It was because I'm hella afraid of what's going on.
Our attention got caught from the door when it banged open.
"Catherine!" my father, George, exclaimed.
He stopped in his trance when he saw me.
He gulped.
For eighteen years of my existence, this was the first time I saw my father get worried.
He shifted his gaze back to my mother.
"The pack is already positioned on the border. We don't have much time," he said and walked closer to Catherine.
"Charles, do what I said. Protect her, hide her," all my mother said and pushed me to Charles.
"Mother... Where are you going? Where is Charles taking me? Mother! Mother!" I started to panic when Charles dragged me out at the back door of our house.
I glanced at George. He didn't even look at me for the last time. I know he was trying to look like he is tough and strong since he's the Alpha of this pack. But in this kind of situation, all I need is his emotional support. At least one more glance because I will never know if I still have this chance to look at each other's eyes as a family.
"No!!!" I yelled when Charles successfully dragged me out of our house.
Before the back door closed, I heard what Catherine said.
"I couldn't believe that the whole council and the alliance pack betrayed us."
"Come on, Miss Astrid! Get hold back yourself! We don't have much time! We need to run!" Charles said impatiently.
I was still in a shock that made me barely move a muscle because of what I'd heard from my mother.
Now, it's clear.
There was a bloody war.
"Miss Astrid!!! Come back to your senses!!!" Charles tried to wake me up once again.
When he saw no progress in me, he hissed and shifted into his wolf form.
"Ride!" he commanded.
I blinked my eyes a couple of times when I heard the urgency in his deep voice.
Even if I don't wanna leave my parents in this dangerous situation, I have no choice but to oblige them. Plus, I know to myself I ain't strong enough to help them. I might become a burden if I join the war. I just had my wolf last month on my eighteen birthday. It was a painful transformation but worth it.
But still, my skill couldn't reach the level that Catherine and George have.
When I was already sitting on Charles's back, he started to run. I immediately gripped his fur to prevent me from falling to the ground. He ran so fast that I couldn't see one specific tree in a second. I narrowed my eyes due to the strong wind welcoming my face.
Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat, and I felt numb when the deafening sound of the bombing explosion was heard from our origin. My heart throbbed, and I felt a sharp knife stab my chest as I felt my connection with my parents start losing.
"No..."
I was about to look back at our origin but stopped when I heard Charles growling.
"Don't look back!" he yelled in a deep voice and ran faster. I could feel his muscles shaking. I could tell he was crying.
When things sank in, I cried badly.
"My p-parents!" I broke into tears and sobbed. I buried my face in Charles's neck as I cried my heart out.
My mourning was interrupted when Charles bumped into something.
He growled in pain and fell badly to the ground.
I lost my grip on his fur, and I fell to the ground as well.
I groaned silently and shut my eyes firmly when the pain kicked in my back down to my waist.
It was really a bad fall.
"How dare you---" Charles word's were cut off in an instant.
I slowly opened my eyes to see who Charles was talking with.
I froze when I saw that there was a sword aimed at his neck from an unknown man.
I looked everywhere, and I saw we were surrounded by a group of werewolves.
"Charles..." I called shakingly.
Charles looked in my direction, and I could see the fear drawn in his eyes. Fear not for his life. Instead, fear for my life.
"Miss Astrid, run!!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs. The next thing I saw, the sword aimed at his neck earlier cut his head. His body slowly falls to the ground as his head rolls in my direction.
It stopped rolling when it bumped into the rock near me. I saw his lifeless bloody face, opened eyes and mouth agape in extreme pain and worry.
"N-No..." I stuttered and my body was shaking in fear.
I stood up as fast as I could just to run away.
Before I could take a step away, a strong grip on my right arm stopped me from escaping. I yelped in pain as I looked at the person standing right behind me.
I gulped hard when I saw he was the man who killed Charles. He has golden eyes, tan skin, a pointed nose, a strong jaw, and smooth brown wavy hair. He has this clean beard on his face.
His gaze was raging as if he was taking my soul away.
I was looking up at him. He was big and taller than me. It looked like he was an Alpha.
Before I could protest and withdraw my arm so I could run to escape, a refreshing scent of eucalyptus and river lingered in my nostrils. I sniffed it and looked into his eyes.
I could see he was stunned but got back to his senses and firm again in a second.
Then, a realization hit me when my inner wolf, Sarah, exclaimed unexpected words inside my head.
'Mate!'
‘Mate!’ my inner wolf, Sarah, exclaimed that it made me freeze.I looked intently at the man as I tried to digest what I’d heard.“Mate…” I involuntarily said those words due to being in shock at what Sarah said.My mate… my mate is this man? The man who killed our Pack Beta Charles? And possibly the man who invaded our pack? All the realization left me speechless. How? How can this be possible?I admit all my life I’ve waited for my mate to come. But, I never expected that my mate would be this kind of person. I never expected to meet him in the middle of the war, wherein our people were dying to save my life—like Charles.I saw his right eyebrow rise at what he had heard. Then soon, he scoffed and chuckled mockingly.“A mate?” he repeated those words as if it was a big joke in his ears.“What are we gonna do to her?” one of the werewolves asked and walked closer in our direction. My attention got caught by the speaker. He shifted back to his human form. He has a great body, a stro
I just woke up when I felt I was swaying in the air. My head is still hurting. My eyes went wide open when I realized I was already inside the cage. It made me come back to my senses that I was under my mate and our pack facing a bloody war.I looked around, and I saw two men holding the end of my cage to carry me. When one of them looked in my direction, I quickly shut my eyes to pretend I was asleep. He even hit the wooden stick on the cage as if he was assuring am still sleeping. When he received no response, I felt he didn't stare at me anymore, and they resumed walking.I curiously peeked through my lashes to see the surroundings. I saw a group of werewolves lined up as if we were heading to a place that I didn't know. I rolled my eyes and looked for the man who turned out to be my mate. And there, I saw him in the front of the line, leading the pack. He was just seriously walking while his Beta, walking behind him, was on the right side.As they walked further, the surroundings
I jumped off the cliff even though I knew I would barely survive. As I looked up, I saw Vincent looking at me as I fell. His golden eyes reflected when the light from the moon touched his face. He just did nothing while I saw Ivan looking at me in worry. Why is that guy looking at me in that way?I couldn’t help but ask myself due to the unusual treatment I received from him. He even let me escape earlier. If Vincent didn’t arrive too soon, for sure, I was already far away from here. After a second, I felt my back and head hit a strong concrete. It gave me excruciating pain in my back, legs, and head. I heard the splash of the ocean as I slowly sank deeper and deeper into the water. My vision became blurry, and I held my breath. I knew for more seconds, that my life would be ended.I couldn't see Vincent’s face clearly. It became distorted because of the water. I didn’t know if I would be thankful that at least, before my last breath, I saw my mate, my mate who killed my parents and i
Am I really crazy in love with this man?"Are you okay?"I blinked my eyes a couple of times when I realized I was zoning out. I lightly pushed his hand away from my chest and averted his gaze."Ah-yes-I'm okay. I am just---little confused," I answered truthfully and looked at him once again as if I was analyzing his face if he can be fully trusted.I quickly held my head when I felt it was aching. I hissed and shut my eyes in pain."Ma'am? Ma'am? Tell me what you feel?" I heard the doctor ask.I looked at him and shook my head as if I was trying to say that everything was fine."My head got hurt when I tried to remember everything," I answered and glanced in the direction of the golden-eyed man."Well, don't push yourself to remember everything. Do you understand?"I don't know but, I felt a rush of fear enveloping my chest. The way he said those words were demanding and authoritative. It looks like if you refuse to do what he said, you will never know where your body will be found t
“I am Veronica, I am Veronica…” I whispered repeatedly as I walked into the hallway.A minute passed, and I stopped walking when I realized something."Shoot! Where am I heading to?" I asked myself as I scanned the place.I saw everyone was busy doing their business. Omegas were busy dusting the tables and furniture, other male servants were busy hanging large and expensive paintings on the wall carefully, and other female omegas walked back and forth because they were busy wiping the floor.I couldn't even catch their attention since their eyes were only darted at what they were doing. As if they were programmed to not look anywhere but only at their work. Deafening silence in the hallway made me uneasy."What should I do?" I whispered as I looked at them."Is there a chance they know me? Since I am the Alpha's mate, maybe they know me a bit, right?" I talked to myself and nodded my head as if I was agreeing with my statement. In the end, I decided to approach one of the Omegas tha
Alpha Vincent’s POV“What is she doing right now?” I asked before sipping my goblet with red wine. I stared outside the window, watching the soldiers training together with Gamma Steven and Delta Dimitri. Even though it was already evening, I didn’t care. They need to be tough and unbeatable.“She’s in her chamber now. I already assigned her to one of the slaves that will be going to train her in her task tomorrow,” my beta, Ivan, answered politely.I took a long deep breath as I stared at the full moon. When the night of invasion in Red Moon Pack rushed inside my head, I evilly smirked.Hundreds of cries, pleas, blood, and bodies were scattered everywhere that night. I felt my sleeping soul awaken, and I got more hungry and thirsty with blood and violence. My favorite part was when I killed the great Alpha of the Red Moon Pack, Alpha George.I licked my lips from the thought I'd felt more powerful this time. Everyone will know me as the great and enormous Alpha since I killed Goerge.
Astrid’s POVAfter Vincent scolded me and shooed me away from his sight, I ran and stopped by the garden. I sat behind the huge tree so that no one could see me.A memory of what happened in the dining room rushed inside my head once again.“Get out! I don’t wanna see your face!”I couldn’t help but sob.I know I should not take that seriously. But, it was undeniably heartbreaking since those words did not come from an ordinary person. It was freaking escaping from my mate’s lips.“Why are you so cold towards me? I thought we were mates?” I whispered in the air as if I was talking to Vincent.I wiped away my tears when I heard birds chirping. I looked up at the sky and saw they were flying on the bluish-white horizon. Seeing the beautiful scenery made me relax somehow. My breathing slowly became stable again, and I stopped crying.“Maybe he just has a lot of work to do. Being an Alpha isn’t a joke, right? That’s why he’s always angry and serious,” I reasoned out, trying to defend his
“Ivan…” I muttered under my breath in disbelief. “You…okay?” he asked in a gentle voice, and he scanned my face. I could see the concern drawn in his ocean blue eyes. He even gently stroked my hair which made me stiff and stunned in my position. He should have asked that question to himself, right? I said at the back of my head due to his unusual action toward me. It made me skeptical about why the Beta of Alpha was concerned and gentle towards me. Maybe the Alpha himself ordered him to take care of me? I guess, but still, I didn’t know if it was true or not. How I wish my guess is right. I quickly move away from him and put the strands of my hair at the back of my right ear. His actions made me feel somehow uneasy. “I…I am okay,” I stuttered and got shy to look at him once again. He took a deep breath and heaved a sigh when he saw everything was fine. “B-Beta…Beta Ivan…” Our attention got caught on the scared voice coming right behind Ivan. Ivan looked in the direction o
