ANWEN'S POV

I didn't remember the walk back to the quarters. I didn't remember crossing the room in Fenric's arms, or being lowered onto the bed.

The next thing I knew, a soft mattress pressed against my back.

Before I could draw a single breath, his mouth crashed into mine—possessive, demanding. I startled for only a heartbeat before I kissed him back just as fiercely, pulling him closer. He let out a low groan of approval, his tongue sliding against mine, and the sound sent something chilling

ANWEN'S POVI didn't remember the walk back to the quarters. I didn't remember crossing the room in Fenric's arms, or being lowered onto the bed.The next thing I knew, a soft mattress pressed against my back. Before I could draw a single breath, his mouth crashed into mine—possessive, demanding. I startled for only a heartbeat before I kissed him back just as fiercely, pulling him closer. He let out a low groan of approval, his tongue sliding against mine, and the sound sent something chilling down my spine. Then his hand was at my sleeve, rough and impatient, tugging the fabric down over my shoulder. I heard the tear before I felt the sharp rip of delicate material giving way. Cool air hit my skin as the dress was stripped off, thrown somewhere to the floor in a crumpled heap.I was bare now, completely, the chill of the room raising gooseflesh across my skin. But Fenric's body was warm above me, and the kiss only grew more consuming. His hand found my breast, cupping and kneading w

  • Bride of the Beasts   Chapter 55: Searching for Him

ANWEN'S POVIt turned out I had been far more exhausted than I realized. As soon as I pressed my face against Fenric's chest and breathed in the faint scent of sandalwood, the world seemed to drift away.I didn't remember falling asleep. I only remembered opening my eyes later to find sunlight spilling across an unfamiliar ceiling. The room was far smaller than my chambers in Blackreach. Its stone walls were plain and bare, devoid of any decoration. The furnishings were equally sparse—a table, a chair, a chest, and the sleeping pallet beneath me.I pushed myself upright.Instantly, every muscle in my body protested. My shoulders and back throbbed with a dull ache, and even my legs felt heavy and sluggish.I had never exerted myself so much before. It was a wonder I hadn't fallen ill.I glanced down at myself. My clothes had been changed. The dress I'd worn during the journey, and throughout yesterday's work, had been replaced with a light nightdress.Frowning, I ran my fingers over t

  • Bride of the Beasts   Chapter 54: Arrival at the Camp

ANWEN'S POVFenric crouched so I could slide from his back, my legs unsteady after the long ride south of Blackreach. The air was colder here, just as Brammon had warned, carrying the scent of pine and distant snow. When I lifted my gaze, the sheer scale of the military camp stole the breath from my lungs. It stretched across the plateau like a small city of stone and canvas.Rows of tents—some simple, others reinforced with leather and metal—lined the outer edges. Beyond them stood sturdy stone buildings, their roofs slanted to shed the early frost. Smoke curled from chimneys. The clash of weapons echoed from nearby training yards. Watchtowers rose along the perimeter, their banners snapping in the wind.Everywhere I looked, Scion soldiers filled the camp—marching between buildings, drilling in formation, or standing watch in polished armor.Every one of them paused when they saw Fenric. A heartbeat later, their attention shifted to me.Dozens of eyes fixed on me at once, as though t

  • Bride of the Beasts   Chapter 53: Tension in the Room

ANWEN'S POVI nearly fell out of my chair at Fenric's announcement. So this was what he had meant earlier when he'd said we had a "big day ahead."I had assumed he was talking about another task. Another tour through some forgotten corner of Blackreach. Or perhaps a lesson on records, ledgers, and the kingdom's history. As strange as my circumstances remained, I was grateful for anything that kept me occupied. It was far better than spending endless hours alone in my chambers with nothing but my thoughts for company. But the military camp? That was something else entirely.A cold knot formed in my stomach. The camp would be filled with Scions. Dozens of them. Perhaps even hundreds. And if my experiences so far had taught me anything, it was that encounters with Scions—other than the three kings—rarely ended well for me.In fact, the fading bruise on my face was proof enough of that. But I couldn't refuse. I wasn't even sure I was allowed to anymore. I had promised not to fight him, an

  • Bride of the Beasts   Chapter 52: Kept Close

ANWEN'S POVIn the days that followed, Fenric hardly let me out of his sight. It was as though I were a new toy he had just acquired—one he was still too fascinated by to put down. Part of me wondered if that fascination would eventually fade.Lately, he hadn't been spending his days at the military camp, where he usually oversaw training drills and the countless other duties required to command an army. Instead, he remained in his study—and brought me along with him.The room was surprisingly organized for someone as chaotic as Fenric. Shelves lined the walls from floor to ceiling, packed with books, maps, ledgers, and scrolls. A massive desk dominated the center of the room, usually buried beneath stacks of reports. When he worked, he made space for me at a smaller table by the window. Sometimes he gave me simple tasks—sorting documents, reading reports aloud, organizing maps by region. And when he had nothing for me to do, he simply let me sit there, as though my presence alone ste

Gadreel led them deeper into the second chamber, the air growing colder and more sterile with every step. His voice echoed softly through the cavernous space.“Two decades ago, every attempt failed,” he said, his hands clasped behind his back. “We believed Azara had cursed only our women. But we were wrong. The curse touched us men as well.”He drew a slow breath before lifting his gaze. “Our seed could no longer take root.”The High King said nothing. Neither did Vaelis. They simply followed, listening as Gadreel continued deeper into the chamber.Gadreel slowed his pace and glanced back at his two companions. “Five years ago,” he continued, “through magical intervention, I managed to cultivate the first viable spark of life.”He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “But it did not survive.”The High King’s expression remained composed, yet a flicker of interest stirred behind his silver-and-gold eyes.Gadreel finally came to a stop before a small cot positioned beneath a canopy of protect
