HAILEY
“No. Not happening, big guy. If I get that close to you again, I’ll lose myself in your scent and drown in those blue eyes.” Hailey knew that if she let Jayden get too close, the carefully crafted mask she’d perfected over the years would fall apart. Still, she couldn’t say no, not completely. There was no good reason to deny him a New Year’s kiss. After all, he was a family friend. Hesitantly, she stepped forward and turned her cheek toward him. Jayden closed the small distance between them and gently took her champagne glass out of her hand and put it on the nearest table. “That’s not exactly what I had in mind, beautiful,” he said with a smile, his voice low and casual, even though there was fire in his eyes. Without another word, he took her hand and led her toward the balcony doors at the far end of the room, guiding her outside. Confused, Hailey stopped as he shut the door behind them. They were alone on the corridor and it was freezing. Her dress was a modest black cocktail style with long sleeves, but the hem sat just above her knees, and the cold air immediately swept under it, sending chills through her body. She rubbed her arms, teeth chattering. “What are you doing? Are you insane? It’s freezing out here,” she snapped, trying to stay warm. Without hesitation, he took off his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around her, pulling her closer by the lapels. “I needed privacy,” he said, voice low and rough. “And I’d be more than happy to warm you up.” Hailey sank into the jacket, still warm from his body. Fuck. He smells like heaven. “Why did we need to come out here?” she asked, still puzzled. “You could’ve just” Before she could finish, Jayden pulled her fully into his arms, jacket and all, and silenced her with his mouth. Her breath caught in her throat as he kissed her, strong and sure. One hand slid into her shoulder-length auburn hair, and the clips holding it back flew away. Her body froze in surprise just long enough for Jayden to take full control of the kiss. He tilted her head, deepened the pressure, and explored her mouth with his tongue so thoroughly it left her gasping. Her body betrayed her, reacting instantly. Her arms looped around his neck as she gave in. Jayden led; she followed swept up in his fierce touch, letting him explore her mouth with bold hunger. And she didn’t just accept it, she reveled in it. This was what she’d secretly wanted from Jayden since her high school graduation the day she’d finally admitted to herself that she was wildly attracted to him. He’d never crossed the line, had never treated her as anything more than a friend. But she had felt the heat between them for years. Unsure whether the desire was mutual, she had kept her distance and avoided meaningful conversations to keep a safe emotional gap. But now? Now, she knew. The hard press of his body told her everything. She didn’t know whether she should celebrate or run away. The passion running through her felt both thrilling and terrifying. In the end, Hailey’s body made the decision for her. Her hormones were all in, cheering wildly. She slid her fingers into his hair and tugged him closer, her mouth fusing more urgently with his. I need to be closer to him. I need this. I need him. She kissed him back without hesitation, letting her tongue move with his. Jayden wasn’t just a fantasy anymore, he was real, and right in front of her. And she let herself sink into the moment, drowning in the sensation of his lips, the feel of his strong arms wrapped around her. He awakened something in her, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. With Jayden, there was no slow burn, he set her on fire. His kiss overwhelmed her with heat, power, and total masculinity. It was all consuming. Eventually, he pulled away, both of them breathing hard. “That’s why I needed privacy,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. His face rested against her hair, and the warmth of his breath on her neck made her tremble. “Watching you from across the room was driving me insane.” Hailey tried to ground herself, to pull away and come back to reality. “Jayden, I” “Don’t,” he interrupted, his voice rough. His arms locked around her. “Don’t tell me you didn’t want that. Or that you don’t want more. Because I know you do.” She couldn’t deny it. Not without lying. And she’d had enough lies in her life. She hadn’t expected her body to react like this but Jayden brought out her wild side. “I did want it,” she admitted. “If I hadn’t, you’d be on the floor right now, screaming in pain after I kneed you in the balls.” And God help me, I want more. But I can’t. I can’t go down this road. She wasn’t the type to give herself over to pure desire without caution. And with Jayden she had a feeling it would never be halfway. He wasn’t the kind of man to do anything halfway. He would want it all. A low, rough laugh rumbled against her ear. “I’m glad to know you haven’t changed much,” he said, clearly amused. Oh, I’ve changed more than you think. “You don’t know me anymore,” she said quietly, pulling back from his warmth reluctantly. He held her by the shoulders, adjusting his jacket around her more tightly. “Maybe not,” he said. “But I want to. I want you. Spend the night with me, Hailey. Let’s go on an adventure, just like when we were kids.” That struck something deep inside her. Their childhood “adventures” were some of her best memories. Most had been simple outings and trips to the candy store, or to get ice cream but Jayden had always made them feel like exciting missions. Even when he was in high school, he’d humored her, playing explorer or pirate just to make her laugh. “I’m not a teenager anymore,” she said, her voice soft and sad. “Believe me,” Jayden murmured darkly, “I know that.” Hailey placed her hands on his strong arms, looking up at him. She searched his face for answers, but in the dim light, all she could see clearly was the lingering hunger in his eyes. “Why?” she asked. “You have women chasing after you every day. Why me? Why now?”If James caught her eating chocolate, she knew he’d be angry. The punishment for the pastry she’d just eaten wouldn’t be pleasant. Chloe rubbed at the chocolate stains harder, her heart racing at the thought of James walking in right now. I need to get rid of the evidence! “It’s just chocolate. It washes off.” The deep, slow Texas drawl came from the kitchen doorway, and the voice startled her so much that she let out a small squeal. It wasn’t James, thank God. It was a voice she knew far too well. Gabriel Walker. Chloe turned toward the sound of that husky male voice, the one that always made her shiver. Gabe Smith had the sexiest voice she’d ever heard. That deep tone, mixed with his Texas accent, sent chills down her spine. And then there were his eyes beautiful green eyes full of kindness. Why does he have to be so hot? It’s unfair for one man to be this handsome and nice. She’d known Gabe since she was a kid, but she’d really started noticing him after moving back to Roc
Epilogue The Story of Chloe and Gabe Chloe's POV Chloe Roberts hated parties. Even though the New Year’s Eve party was full of family and old friends from Rocky Springs, the small town where she grew up, she still felt uneasy. Her mood had dropped when her fiancé, James, told her that the pretty black cocktail dress she wore didn’t look good on her. He didn’t say it nicely either, he told her it made her look fat and that she should change. She didn’t change, not because she wanted to fight him, but because it was the only nice dress she owned that still fit her curvy body. She had bought it just for the party at her mother’s house. Since she didn’t go to many parties, her closet was full of jeans, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. As a veterinarian who worked with animals all day, casual clothes were perfect for her job. At first, Chloe had been excited about the party. She didn’t usually enjoy fancy events, even though she was a billionaire now and they were part of her life. But
Ally nodded. “Yep. Chloe really likes Travis.” “I’m glad we won’t have to wait long to see you again,” Christine said happily to Travis and Ally. Terrence’s mind wandered to Chloe and how sad she had seemed lately. He reminded himself that he needed to look into her situation with James. Something about their relationship didn’t feel right. And after what Christine had said about James acting rude at the gym, Terrence wasn’t happy about Chloe marrying someone who might not treat her well. Now that he knew what real happiness felt like, he wanted the same for all his siblings. “Hey, Ally! That’s the buffet I told you about,” Christine squealed. “Let’s stop there,” Ally said eagerly. “I’d love to try it.” Travis gave Terrence a pained look. Clearly, he didn’t like Vegas buffets any more than Terrence did. Unfortunately, Ally and Christine seemed to love them. “I’m a billionaire. We can eat at any restaurant in this city. Do I really need to suffer through a buffet?” Travis s
“More than I ever thought I would be, buddy. And you will be, too. Christine is an amazing woman, and she’s perfect for you. She wants to meet Aria now so she can see if there’s anything she can do before she goes back to school. She wants to help. Your woman has a kind heart,” Travis said to Terrence sincerely. Terrence nodded. He knew how big her heart was, it was as wide as the ocean. “I know. I just wish she’d stop hugging you for saving her life.” Once was fine, but it felt like Christine hugged Travis every time she saw him. And even if Travis was his best friend, Terrence didn’t like watching his fiancée hug another man under eighty. Travis raised an eyebrow. “Possessive, aren’t you? I remember when you used to tease me by flirting with Ally.” Terrence flinched, remembering how he’d done that just to annoy Travis because he thought it was funny. He didn’t think it was funny anymore. “I regret that now,” he muttered. Travis smirked. “Good. Then I’ll stop telling Christine ho
Travis crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow at Terrence. “Roberts, she already knows you’re an asshole. I told her myself. But for some reason, she still wants to marry you. She’ll be here.” Travis pulled up the sleeve of his expensive suit and checked his watch. “For Christ’s sake, it’s only noon.” Terrence looked at his own watch. “It’s one minute after,” he said gruffly. “She’s with Ally, and I’m sure my wife isn’t running away. I stopped worrying about that a long time ago. She loves me,” Travis said with a smug smile. “Christine loves me too,” Terrence replied confidently, trying to calm his nerves. He should have stayed with Christine in case she got cold feet. But instead, he got ready with Travis while Christine went with Ally to buy a new dress. Even though they were getting married in Vegas, Terrence wanted the day to be special. He wore a tuxedo, and Travis wore a nice suit. Luckily, Travis and Ally were free to come and stand up for them. Terrence had thought about a
“It was a dangerous mission. We were shot down before we could finish what we came to do. I was lucky I managed to land the helicopter without it catching fire. But the crash was bad. I took most of the hit. Everyone else was able to get out on their own.” The mission had been a mess, but at least no one had died. “Who got you out?” Christine asked worriedly. “My team. They had to carry me for miles before help came.” “You actually let them carry you?” she asked, surprised. “It was that or bleed to death in enemy land. Right now, I’m just damn glad I lived.” She looked at him with suspicion. “Did you get hurt on purpose?” Terrence shrugged, not wanting to admit that he had taken the worst of the crash to protect his men. He had tried to make the helicopter hit his side first. “I was the senior officer and commander,” he said simply. He didn’t answer directly, but Christine’s eyes softened as she understood what he meant without him saying it. Their eyes met, and Terrence
