“No. Not happening, big guy. If I get that close to you again, I’ll lose myself in your scent and drown in those blue eyes.” Hailey knew that if she let Jayden get too close, the carefully crafted mask she’d perfected over the years would fall apart. Still, she couldn’t say no, not completely. There was no good reason to deny him a New Year’s kiss. After all, he was a family friend. Hesitantly, she stepped forward and turned her cheek toward him. Jayden closed the small distance between them and gently took her champagne glass out of her hand and put it on the nearest table. “That’s not exactly what I had in mind, beautiful,” he said with a smile, his voice low and casual, even though there was fire in his eyes. Without another word, he took her hand and led her toward the balcony doors at the far end of the room, guiding her outside. Confused, Hailey stopped as he shut the door behind them. They were alone on the corridor and it was freezing. Her dress was a modest black cocktail style with long sleeves, but the hem sat just above her knees, and the cold air immediately swept under it, sending chills through her body. She rubbed her arms, teeth chattering. “What are you doing? Are you insane? It’s freezing out here,” she snapped, trying to stay warm. Without hesitation, he took off his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around her, pulling her closer by the lapels. “I needed privacy,” he said, voice low and rough. “And I’d be more than happy to warm you up.” Hailey sank into the jacket, still warm from his body. Fuck. He smells like heaven. “Why did we need to come out here?” she asked, still puzzled. “You could’ve just” Before she could finish, Jayden pulled her fully into his arms, jacket and all, and silenced her with his mouth. Her breath caught in her throat as he kissed her, strong and sure. One hand slid into her shoulder-length auburn hair, and the clips holding it back flew away. Her body froze in surprise just long enough for Jayden to take full control of the kiss. He tilted her head, deepened the pressure, and explored her mouth with his tongue so thoroughly it left her gasping. Her body betrayed her, reacting instantly. Her arms looped around his neck as she gave in. Jayden led; she followed swept up in his fierce touch, letting him explore her mouth with bold hunger. And she didn’t just accept it, she reveled in it. This was what she’d secretly wanted from Jayden since her high school graduation the day she’d finally admitted to herself that she was wildly attracted to him. He’d never crossed the line, had never treated her as anything more than a friend. But she had felt the heat between them for years. Unsure whether the desire was mutual, she had kept her distance and avoided meaningful conversations to keep a safe emotional gap. But now? Now, she knew. The hard press of his body told her everything. She didn’t know whether she should celebrate or run away. The passion running through her felt both thrilling and terrifying. In the end, Hailey’s body made the decision for her. Her hormones were all in, cheering wildly. She slid her fingers into his hair and tugged him closer, her mouth fusing more urgently with his. I need to be closer to him. I need this. I need him. She kissed him back without hesitation, letting her tongue move with his. Jayden wasn’t just a fantasy anymore, he was real, and right in front of her. And she let herself sink into the moment, drowning in the sensation of his lips, the feel of his strong arms wrapped around her. He awakened something in her, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. With Jayden, there was no slow burn, he set her on fire. His kiss overwhelmed her with heat, power, and total masculinity. It was all consuming. Eventually, he pulled away, both of them breathing hard. “That’s why I needed privacy,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. His face rested against her hair, and the warmth of his breath on her neck made her tremble. “Watching you from across the room was driving me insane.” Hailey tried to ground herself, to pull away and come back to reality. “Jayden, I” “Don’t,” he interrupted, his voice rough. His arms locked around her. “Don’t tell me you didn’t want that. Or that you don’t want more. Because I know you do.” She couldn’t deny it. Not without lying. And she’d had enough lies in her life. She hadn’t expected her body to react like this but Jayden brought out her wild side. “I did want it,” she admitted. “If I hadn’t, you’d be on the floor right now, screaming in pain after I kneed you in the balls.” And God help me, I want more. But I can’t. I can’t go down this road. She wasn’t the type to give herself over to pure desire without caution. And with Jayden she had a feeling it would never be halfway. He wasn’t the kind of man to do anything halfway. He would want it all. A low, rough laugh rumbled against her ear. “I’m glad to know you haven’t changed much,” he said, clearly amused. Oh, I’ve changed more than you think. “You don’t know me anymore,” she said quietly, pulling back from his warmth reluctantly. He held her by the shoulders, adjusting his jacket around her more tightly. “Maybe not,” he said. “But I want to. I want you. Spend the night with me, Hailey. Let’s go on an adventure, just like when we were kids.” That struck something deep inside her. Their childhood “adventures” were some of her best memories. Most had been simple outings and trips to the candy store, or to get ice cream but Jayden had always made them feel like exciting missions. Even when he was in high school, he’d humored her, playing explorer or pirate just to make her laugh. “I’m not a teenager anymore,” she said, her voice soft and sad. “Believe me,” Jayden murmured darkly, “I know that.” Hailey placed her hands on his strong arms, looking up at him. She searched his face for answers, but in the dim light, all she could see clearly was the lingering hunger in his eyes. “Why?” she asked. “You have women chasing after you every day. Why me? Why now?”"My parents died in a car accident years ago, so there is just me, Debby, and my three brothers. They all know. Jett told them. Since he got injured on the last mission, he did not have much of a choice. I think they are all trying to get information from different sources. I could not wait any longer. I came to ask Marcus to help when we kept hitting obstacles from conventional methods. I did not realize he had never told anyone but Blake about PRO. Pretty much all of their covers were exposed." "Only to some of the governments," Christine responded. "Basically the very people they did not want to know about them. Our government did not leak the information to the public, so Marcus did not have to tell Aileen or the rest of the family." I thought about how worried this woman probably was about her husband, and I felt guilty. "I am sorry. Really, none of the Roberts family should have had to get involved." "I do not blame you," Christine replied in a quiet voice. "If I had a siblin
I knew the former Special Forces Roberts brother had married a previous FBI agent. My brother, Jett, kept me updated on Roberts family news since he had been a teammate of Marcus's for several years. He had mentioned the unlikely pair of lovers once or twice. "I am Sophia Bennett. My sister is the reason your husband is not home right now." Christine nodded toward the cabin. "Come in, please. I will get you something warm to drink. You look like you are freezing." She turned and gestured for the dog to go back to the house, and I followed her. We were settled into the large but welcoming cabin before she spoke again while she was making coffee. Not knowing what else to do, I sat at the table in the small dining area. "I am sorry about your sister," Christine said kindly. "It is terrible when an innocent person gets caught up in the madness of the world." I sighed. "Your brother in law, Marcus, said that Debby knew what she was getting into, and she knew the dangers. He was corre
SOPHIA Still feeling confused and worried, I had grabbed my jacket and put on a pair of hiking boots not long after Blake left my room, needing to be somewhere that I did not feel trapped with my own thoughts. Unfortunately, I had not been able to escape my mind, and I was just as anxious several hours later, even after I felt like I had walked for miles. I was an experienced hiker, but I realized that I had thrown every rule of hiking and navigation out the window as I had walked in a daze, paying no attention to anything except my internal thoughts. Damn it. I finally became aware of where I was, and eyed the snow that was still on the ground. Spring was coming, but it had not arrived yet, and I was cold, following a path that seemed like it led nowhere. Pine trees lined the concrete road, and I kept moving when I saw smoke in the distance, quite certain it was someone's fireplace, so there had to be people ahead. I kept moving. Even after hours of thought, I was not any clo
I smiled at her. "I still consider myself the luckiest bastard on the planet to have been your first." "I am glad it was you," she said in a serious tone. I could not say that Sophia was the only woman I had ever been with. I had been a horny young man before I met her, but I could say being with her had deeply changed me. After Sophia, and the way I had felt with her, no woman could ever touch my soul in the same way. Jealous emotions seized my heart, squeezing it like a clamp as I thought about Sophia being with any other man. It did not matter if thirteen years had gone by without me seeing her. What was it that made me feel like she belonged to me just because I had once made her scream and tremble in a powerful release? Seeing her again was making me lose my fucking mind. I stood up suddenly, worried that I could not control my primal instincts to drag Sophia away as my very delayed reward. I was a respected public servant, and all I could think about was getting Sophia na
SOPHIA I could hear the fear in my voice, a doubt that was not typical for me. His gray eyes grew darker. "They will try everything they have to extract her if she is still alive." That was the possible truth I did not want to speak, the one thing I could not accept. "She cannot be dead." I said the words because I desperately wanted them to be true. Blake stood and came to sit beside me, pulling me into his arms as though it was completely natural for him. "I hope she is not." The comforting tone of his voice finally made me break down. I had worried for weeks, wondering if Debby was still alive. The stress fracture in my heart finally split completely open, and I cried. BLAKE I felt fucking helpless because all I could truly do was hold Sophia in my arms as she sobbed out every bit of fear she had kept inside about her sister's safety. I could not promise her that Debby was still alive. The international correspondent was in a world where nobody would care if she was behead
A single tear fell onto my cheek, and I grieved for what could have been if I had not been so fast to make assumptions, or if I had answered his call just once. I knew I could not have a serious relationship with him, but maybe we could have been friends. Maybe the resentment between us would have been resolved years ago. "I do not know what to say." "Do not say you are sorry again," he requested. "You have nothing to be sorry about. I did not realize until Marcus told me what you had said to him that you had seen him with somebody else. It would have hurt me back then. I am sure it was painful for you." I nodded as I wiped the tear from my face. "It did. I suppose it was because you were my first." "You will never know how much that meant to me, or how much it destroyed me that you would not speak to me again," he answered in a low, rough voice. "I wanted it to be you," I said in a voice that was barely audible. "I knew the feelings were right. I never regretted it, Blake." "Ev
“No. I was just wondering if we have enough food to last through the storm.” Terrence laughed, a warm sound that filled Christine’s heart with happiness. “I should have known you’d be worried about food,” he said with a grin. “Don’t worry, I’ve got us covered. Gabe had the caretakers make sur
Christine snorted. “Who hasn’t? Kade Harrison was a famous quarterback and a billionaire, and Travis Harrison is a smart businessman. I think it’s great that they both help.” “We don’t just help,” Terrence said. “We run the whole thing. Jayden Knight handles the money, and the rest of us do the fu
“I want to show you something,” he said in a rough voice. “I don’t have much time before my flight,” Christine said. She needed to get there early, and she had already spent extra time with Terrence’s mom and Chloe. “That won’t be a problem,” Terrence said calmly. “Of course it’s a problem! The
“It was a dangerous mission. We were shot down before we could finish what we came to do. I was lucky I managed to land the helicopter without it catching fire. But the crash was bad. I took most of the hit. Everyone else was able to get out on their own.” The mission had been a mess, but at least
