HAILEY
“You could’ve had the most gorgeous woman in that room if all you wanted was to pass the time.” Jayden Knight was a billionaire investor and at thirty, one of the most eligible bachelors in the world. Even though they’d grown up as family friends, Hailey didn’t understand why he wanted to spend any time with her. Sure, she owned a house in their small town, but she didn’t actually live here. Jayden had flown in just for Gavin’s engagement party and the New Year’s celebration. They were both leaving in the morning. Maybe he was just restless and bored. Still, there were plenty of beautiful women inside if he wanted a meaningless hookup. She couldn’t give him what he was probably looking for, and deep down, she wanted more from him than she could ever allow herself to have. Jayden was like a drug, dangerously addictive but she couldn’t take him in the way she longed to. Jayden shrugged casually. “I already picked the most beautiful woman at the party. And I’m not here to kill time. I just don’t feel like pretending tonight, Hailey.” There was something raw in his voice and it sounded like loneliness which made her instantly sympathetic. Hailey didn’t even bother to pretend she didn’t know what he meant. She did. Jayden was always surrounded by people. He lived in the world of the ultra wealthy, but she understood how hard it was to know who genuinely cared about you in that world. Were they real friends or just people after what you had? She’d grown up in the same circles, and that world was shallow at best. That’s why she avoided the spotlight now and kept her distance from that lifestyle. Jayden didn’t have that choice. He was still too young to step away, and she doubted he ever would. He wasn’t the retiring type, he was driven, always had been. Hailey raised a hand to his face and gently traced his jaw. She loved the rough texture of his stubble beneath her fingertips. “You’re more than just your money,” she whispered sincerely. Beneath his brutal, businesslike exterior, Jayden had the heart of a man who had done just about anything to cheer up a grade school geek who had been bullied during her childhood years. He’d even been willing to make a fool of himself when he was supposed to be a cool high school kid. That heart still beats in this man’s chest. He’d just learned to cover it well with social ennui and the “kill or be killed” survival instinct in business, just like her brothers had. Jayden’s voice came out gruff. “And what else do I have to offer?” He slipped one strong arm around her waist and lightly traced her lips with the pad of his finger. Other than the fact that you have a good heart and the face and body of a Greek god? Or being so hot you could make a woman drop her panties just by looking at her? Oh and did I mention you’re also crazy intelligent?. Hailey said in her head. Jayden wasn’t just handsome, he was every woman’s fantasy. Hailey had never seen him fully undressed, but she could already tell he was gorgeous underneath those clothes. His suits didn’t hide his toned build, and his tall frame and broad shoulders made him look powerful and dangerous. His hair was a mix of sun kissed blond shades, always styled in a way that looked perfectly messy like he’d just run a hand through it and he had the perfect sex bed hair. Somehow, he made even a suit look casual and sexy. Actually, especially in a tux, he looked devastatingly attractive. That effortlessly ruffled style made women especially her want to tear his clothes off and fuck him so hard until either of them could walk. “You have a good heart, Jayden,” she finally said, distracted by the feel of his finger brushing over her lips and the intense desire in his eyes. She figured it was best to leave out the whole you’re hot enough to ruin me thing for now. Jayden threw his head back and laughed. “What? You do,” Hailey said firmly, crossing her arms in mock offense. He calmed down slightly, shooting her a sly grin. “I’m an asshole, Hailey.” She couldn’t argue with that. A man with his kind of money had to be ruthless on some level. “Only on the outside,” she whispered . Her hand dropped from his cheek to his shoulder. He played with a strand of her hair, his expression thoughtful. “You’d be surprised how deep the asshole side goes.” He sighed. “My sweet Hailey, rescuer of all things lost or broken, are you planning to fix me too?” he asked with a smirk on his impossibly handsome face.If James caught her eating chocolate, she knew he’d be angry. The punishment for the pastry she’d just eaten wouldn’t be pleasant. Chloe rubbed at the chocolate stains harder, her heart racing at the thought of James walking in right now. I need to get rid of the evidence! “It’s just chocolate. It washes off.” The deep, slow Texas drawl came from the kitchen doorway, and the voice startled her so much that she let out a small squeal. It wasn’t James, thank God. It was a voice she knew far too well. Gabriel Walker. Chloe turned toward the sound of that husky male voice, the one that always made her shiver. Gabe Smith had the sexiest voice she’d ever heard. That deep tone, mixed with his Texas accent, sent chills down her spine. And then there were his eyes beautiful green eyes full of kindness. Why does he have to be so hot? It’s unfair for one man to be this handsome and nice. She’d known Gabe since she was a kid, but she’d really started noticing him after moving back to Roc
Epilogue The Story of Chloe and Gabe Chloe's POV Chloe Roberts hated parties. Even though the New Year’s Eve party was full of family and old friends from Rocky Springs, the small town where she grew up, she still felt uneasy. Her mood had dropped when her fiancé, James, told her that the pretty black cocktail dress she wore didn’t look good on her. He didn’t say it nicely either, he told her it made her look fat and that she should change. She didn’t change, not because she wanted to fight him, but because it was the only nice dress she owned that still fit her curvy body. She had bought it just for the party at her mother’s house. Since she didn’t go to many parties, her closet was full of jeans, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. As a veterinarian who worked with animals all day, casual clothes were perfect for her job. At first, Chloe had been excited about the party. She didn’t usually enjoy fancy events, even though she was a billionaire now and they were part of her life. But
Ally nodded. “Yep. Chloe really likes Travis.” “I’m glad we won’t have to wait long to see you again,” Christine said happily to Travis and Ally. Terrence’s mind wandered to Chloe and how sad she had seemed lately. He reminded himself that he needed to look into her situation with James. Something about their relationship didn’t feel right. And after what Christine had said about James acting rude at the gym, Terrence wasn’t happy about Chloe marrying someone who might not treat her well. Now that he knew what real happiness felt like, he wanted the same for all his siblings. “Hey, Ally! That’s the buffet I told you about,” Christine squealed. “Let’s stop there,” Ally said eagerly. “I’d love to try it.” Travis gave Terrence a pained look. Clearly, he didn’t like Vegas buffets any more than Terrence did. Unfortunately, Ally and Christine seemed to love them. “I’m a billionaire. We can eat at any restaurant in this city. Do I really need to suffer through a buffet?” Travis s
“More than I ever thought I would be, buddy. And you will be, too. Christine is an amazing woman, and she’s perfect for you. She wants to meet Aria now so she can see if there’s anything she can do before she goes back to school. She wants to help. Your woman has a kind heart,” Travis said to Terrence sincerely. Terrence nodded. He knew how big her heart was, it was as wide as the ocean. “I know. I just wish she’d stop hugging you for saving her life.” Once was fine, but it felt like Christine hugged Travis every time she saw him. And even if Travis was his best friend, Terrence didn’t like watching his fiancée hug another man under eighty. Travis raised an eyebrow. “Possessive, aren’t you? I remember when you used to tease me by flirting with Ally.” Terrence flinched, remembering how he’d done that just to annoy Travis because he thought it was funny. He didn’t think it was funny anymore. “I regret that now,” he muttered. Travis smirked. “Good. Then I’ll stop telling Christine ho
Travis crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow at Terrence. “Roberts, she already knows you’re an asshole. I told her myself. But for some reason, she still wants to marry you. She’ll be here.” Travis pulled up the sleeve of his expensive suit and checked his watch. “For Christ’s sake, it’s only noon.” Terrence looked at his own watch. “It’s one minute after,” he said gruffly. “She’s with Ally, and I’m sure my wife isn’t running away. I stopped worrying about that a long time ago. She loves me,” Travis said with a smug smile. “Christine loves me too,” Terrence replied confidently, trying to calm his nerves. He should have stayed with Christine in case she got cold feet. But instead, he got ready with Travis while Christine went with Ally to buy a new dress. Even though they were getting married in Vegas, Terrence wanted the day to be special. He wore a tuxedo, and Travis wore a nice suit. Luckily, Travis and Ally were free to come and stand up for them. Terrence had thought about a
“It was a dangerous mission. We were shot down before we could finish what we came to do. I was lucky I managed to land the helicopter without it catching fire. But the crash was bad. I took most of the hit. Everyone else was able to get out on their own.” The mission had been a mess, but at least no one had died. “Who got you out?” Christine asked worriedly. “My team. They had to carry me for miles before help came.” “You actually let them carry you?” she asked, surprised. “It was that or bleed to death in enemy land. Right now, I’m just damn glad I lived.” She looked at him with suspicion. “Did you get hurt on purpose?” Terrence shrugged, not wanting to admit that he had taken the worst of the crash to protect his men. He had tried to make the helicopter hit his side first. “I was the senior officer and commander,” he said simply. He didn’t answer directly, but Christine’s eyes softened as she understood what he meant without him saying it. Their eyes met, and Terrence
