"Me? What makes you certain that it'll be me?" Puzzled, Hazel arched a brow at him slightly tilting her head.
I glanced over at Hazel for a brief moment, to see if she's taking in the news well. But to my surprise, she didn't seem tensed at all. Does her death not bother her? Or perhaps she had made up her mind to face the worst and was taking the situation more practically.I snapped back from my swirling thoughts when I heard Noel speaking up.
"I'm not certain, of course. It's a hunch. That being aside, if the killer actually wants to kill the ones Rai cares about, he might have a personal reason for committing murder." He frowned, and then turned to meet my eyes, "Rai, have you ever offended anyone so deeply that made someone readily commit murder?"
I took a minute to recall anyone that would have been hurt by me so deeply but I couldn't find anyone like that from my memories.
"I don't recall anyone like that." I replied after giving it a brief thought.
"Then do—"
Before Noel could interrogate me further, his phone rang. He picked it up from the bedside table and frowned when he read the caller's ID.
"It's the prosecutor in charge of Damon's murder case..."He glanced at us, keeping a finger on his lips as he answered the call.
"Yes, Prosecutor Elisa?"
We couldn't hear the voice from the other side but it seemed important and Noel had seemingly agreed to something.
After a 10 minutes call, he ended it and sighed. We peered at him with a tensed expression, waiting for him to relay the news.
"What did you two talk about?" Hazel asked.
He shrugged. "She wants to come over for a short interrogation related to my assault as well as for a discussion on the murderer."
"Is she trying to rope you into solving the case alongside her? But you're not a legal prosecutor yet." Hazel frowned.
"Huh? Haven't I informed you two about it?"
"About what?"
"That I'll be getting my license soon."
"Huh?! When did that happen? Didn't you have, like, 2 more years to complete?"
"I told I was getting into a new law school but didn't say that I was STUDYING there permanently— I am already 22. Prosecutor Elisa had suggested me to observe from afar for gaining more knowledge in one of the law schools abroad. It went on for a few months. After which, I gave the bar exam and passed. My license will be coming anytime soon."
"All of this happened and you never bothered to even text me all these years?" Hazel's face flushed in anger.
"Alright, well, sorry." He didn't even look a bit sorry while he said it.
I had to bite the inside of my cheeks to hold back my laughter while watching them bickering like school kids. But it soon hit me that the problem at hand was more important.
"I think we're going off the topic." I interrupted them.
Noel blinked at me and then cleared his throat awkwardly after realization hit him. "Uh, right. So, about prosecutor Elisa. I think we would get better clues of who the killer is if I join in on the investigation. It'll enable me to get access to Damon Michelle's murder scene. I've already decided to help her since I'll be discharged from the hospital within a few days. She'll be coming tonight to interrogate me about my assault so I am planning to tell her about it then. And...."
I and Hazel began listening carefully to his plan. He himself wasn't sure if it would work out as he planned. He restricted us from leaking any information about the case or the things that he'd explained to us — not even to his own father— since he wanted to keep everything secretive for the time being. After the discussion, I and Hazel went back home. The next morning, I woke up with a new start. For some reason, I felt refreshed — as if a huge load of burden had been taken off my shoulders. I brushed my teeth, took a quick shower and had egg toasts for breakfast as usual. I glanced over at the thin window curtains struggling to stay still because of the wind whistling through them. I looked out the window and smiled as the cool breeze brushed past my face.
"The weather seems nice today. Maybe I should go out for a jog?"
I couldn't suppress my urge to go out in this fine weather. And thus, I put on my headphones, playing a soft music that would be perfect for the weather, and headed out.The weather wasn't too hot or too cold— just perfect. I zipped up my jogging hoodie and glanced at the moving truck infront of my apartment building. It'd been parked there with professional movers carrying stuffs in since last night. But I hadn't seen who my new neighbor was yet.
"I wonder if it will be a family with kids just like the ones in the floor below us." I thought.
Just then, I spotted two boys — of my age — walking out of the apartment building carrying flattened cardboard boxes.I froze in place when I realized who it was.
"Sam and Aleck?! In this big city, they saw only MY building to move into?" I thought as I stared at them, mouth agaped.
I quickly covered my face with my hood, lowering my head and briskly walking past them while they were busy chatting with each other.I kept jogging for a long while in the park, thinking if it would be the right choice to return back now— if they would accidentally see me. It's not that I was scared of them—not anymore— I just didn't want to deal with their trash when I was in a good mood after so long. They never left a chance to call me names like "freak", "trash can" and worse, but like always, I ignored them. They get the courage to show off their 'manliness' only when Noel's not around.
After another 15 minutes, I decided to head back home. I lowered by head and began walking towards my apartment while Sam stood outside the building like a watchdog, and Aleck went back inside the truck to get another box.
Just then, I felt a hand clamp on my shoulder.
"Now, now, isn't this the infamous murderer?"
That annoying voice — I recognized it immediately. I sighed and jerked his hand off my shoulder and started walking again, trying to get to my building as fast as possible. Suddenly, he pulled me by the back of my hoodie and I stumbled backwards and faced him.
"Why are you running away? Are you scared?"
Sam sneered.I just stared at him blankly for a brief moment before looking behind him with a bright smile. "Oh, hey, Noel!"
His whole body tensed up on hearing the name and a small gasp escaped his lips. He immediately looked over his shoulder only to see that no one was actually there.
"Y-You, piece of!" Realising that he was being toyed with, he turned around to look at me, nerves popping out in anger. But before he could spill another word out of his fowl mouth, my feet slammed hard against his face and he fell down with a thud.
"Ouch. Was that too strong?" I winced, doubting for a second if he was dead. His limp body laid there with a bleeding nose and no consciousness. I inched closer to his 'dead' body and nudged his face with my foot. I noticed his chest slowly rising and falling.
"He's fine." I thought as I walked away from the body and went back into my apartment building while humming a song.
After a few minutes, Aleck came out of the truck carrying a box. He gasped, horrified by his friend's state. The box fell from his hands as he ran up to his friend's dusty body."Oh God! Sam, who did this to you?!"
"What? They moved next door? What kind of scheme are they plotting now?" Noel's irritated voice shot through the speaker of my phone. After I returned back to my apartment, I explained everything to Hazel and called Noel to inform him about them moving into our building. At first, Sam and Aleck moving into our building didn't seem as suspicious as I thought it would be until I related the circumstances around which they'd come here — The killer was on the loose, Noel had been attacked and all of a sudden they appeared infront of the apartment I live in, which is originally Noel's.As expected, Noel too, thought that it was unsettling that they were moving next door. We couldn't help but think if they were related to Noel's assault in any way since they'd been holding a grudge against him since forever. I shared my theory with him but he seemed unsure and skeptical about it."But that's unlikely of them. They wouldn't dare to lay a finger
It was already midnight."Noel promised that he'd come earlier so what's taking him so long?" I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly while waiting for Noel with dinner all ready and served on two plates on the table. It was getting too late so I decided to wait for him after finishing up the meal. I picked up my fork and started digging into the meat. As soon as a piece went into my mouth, the cold and hard layers of the meat landed on my tongue and my face twisted in disgust and I immediately spat it out."Ugh..the food got cold..." Frustrated, I dropped the silverware on the table with a loud clink. The taste of the cold meat still lingered on my tongue even after washing my mouth."I can't deal with this anymore. I'll just call him. He's probably in the investigation scene and his phone must've been switched off but it wouldn't hurt for me to try, right?" I mumbled under my breath and made my way to the bedroom to gr
Days passed by with Noel going out for the investigation early in the morning before I wake up and Hazel locking herself inside her house for most time of the day. Naturally, I got worried about her and tried knocking at her door and calling out her name several times but no sound came from the other side of the door except for what seemed like continuous tapping of her fingers on a keyboard and clinking of cans as it fell on the floor. Those noises were the only evidence that proved her existence inside that apartment which saw no light for more than two weeks. I could have given her space if she was actually working, but as far as I know, she is merely a keeper of the orphanage. She isn't even legally an adult so it won't make sense for her to work on something that requires a keyboard. I wish I could just slam the door open and drag her out of that den to see the light of the day—Obviously it won't kill her to come out once in a while. But today, I didn
Tears that streamed down my face got carried away by the water in which I was... sinking."I didn't do it, I didn't do it, I DIDN'T DO IT!!." I kept thinking to myself as I shut my eyes, wanting this horrible nightmare to end and wake up any moment. But that wasn't the case. My body kept slowly drifting down into the bottomless ocean of water. "Even nightmares aren't as horrible as my life."I didn't want myself to end up this way. I had greater aims and dreams. It is said that right before the death of a person, they start recalling their precious moments spent on Earth. The moment I shut my eyes, a short and bitter film of my life started playing in my mind. I guess I really was going to die.....I was just an ordinary boy who dreamt of becoming a science teacher because of my love of stars and constellations. I wasn't a bright kid and was really timid. That was one of the reasons why I was dying wit
Just when I thought I was done sobbing, I turned around with my trembling feet and tried to move but.. I couldn't. My legs went numb almost immediately and I fell on the hard marble floor with a thud. When I felt my skin in contact with a liquid as soon as my legs touched the ground, I realised that I was surrounded by a pool of crimson red blood— My mother and Emily's blood. My eyes stung and tears started welling up again in my eyes when I took a proper look at them. They were covered in blood and deep, sharp wounds were engraved on their bodies. My little sister's eyes were wide open —but dead and empty— with blood flowing out of her mouth and stomach and her features were mauled beyond recognition."What a monster..." I grimaced. My heart tightened when I imagined the moment when my mother was piercing her body into pieces like an animal. When I was busy wrapping my head around everything that had just unfolded in front of me, lo
The moon was hiding behind the night sky and yet it's glowing light still managed to illuminate the darkness of the night....but nothing could ever lighten up my heart which was harboring all the darkness into it with time. The wind picked up it's pace and I hugged myself tightly for warmth in this chilly weather. I did my best to walk on with my shaky legs on the shore of the beach which was about 27 kilometers away from my home.I managed to get away from the cop's dead body without getting noticed but the guilt of murdering someone was killing me inside. It made me feel sick and disgusted of myself. I began questioning why was I even alive at this moment. Was I just hoping for everything to turn out to be a sick joke all along? My body felt heavy and my eyes were dead with no hope of living on."It's already over for me then why am I still living? Just..why?" That's all I could think at that moment. Suddenly, the roaring of the blue sea caught my
I hadn't realised when my eyes started feeling heavy and my head hit the soft pillow. The moment I heard the door creak open, I yawned and parted my eyelids ever so slightly to see who is at the door.It was Hazel, on her wheelchair with a glass of juice in her one hand and a pair of jeans and shirt in the other. She greeted me with her usual signature smile and invited herself in. I tried to shove my sleepy self aside and rubbed my eyes as I let my back lean against the wall.I watched her as she inched closer to the bedside and handed over the glass to me. "Looks like you slept well. Do you feel fine now?""Yeah, I feel better than before. Maybe I was just too exhausted.. what are those for?" I ask, after taking a sip of the refreshing juice. The corner of my lips raised into a satisfying smile as it filled my body with it's coldness and refreshes me inside - out."I'll come to collect you after 15 minutes. Wear these and come ou
"This is your room. You'll be staying here. My room is next to yours so you can call me if you need anything. There's some snacks in the fridge, you can get whatever you want from there. You can tell me when you feel like to meet the others, I'll show you around. " She took out a key from her pocket and unlocked the door of an empty room.I thanked her for showing the way and apologized for the earlier incident. We exchanged phone numbers and bid each other goodbye. I entered the room and shut the door behind me."So tiring....." I walked to the bedroom and jumped straight into the fluffy bed without taking care of my growling stomach. *Riiiinng*I woke up to the ringing of my phone. I searched for my cellphone with my eyes still closed and my head still glued to the pillow. I found my phone beside the pillow and answered the call without checking who it was."Hello..?""Rai, it's me — Hazel. There's something I
