It was already midnight.
"Noel promised that he'd come earlier so what's taking him so long?" I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly while waiting for Noel with dinner all ready and served on two plates on the table. It was getting too late so I decided to wait for him after finishing up the meal. I picked up my fork and started digging into the meat. As soon as a piece went into my mouth, the cold and hard layers of the meat landed on my tongue and my face twisted in disgust and I immediately spat it out.
"Ugh..the food got cold..." Frustrated, I dropped the silverware on the table with a loud clink. The taste of the cold meat still lingered on my tongue even after washing my mouth.
"I can't deal with this anymore. I'll just call him. He's probably in the investigation scene and his phone must've been switched off but it wouldn't hurt for me to try, right?" I mumbled under my breath and made my way to the bedroom to grab my phone.
I spotted my phone and reached out to it. But as I picked it up, I realised that it wasn't mine.
"Hazel's phone? Wait— did our phones get switched? She must have mistaken my phone for hers since both of them are the same model. I'll go get it from her..." I thought as I walked out of my room and then the apartment. As I got out, I glanced at the floorboard of her door and noticed a dim blue light spreading out.
"She's still awake?" I inched closer to the door and only then did I hear her voice faintly. It was almost as if she was having a conversation with someone. I leaned a bit closer to the door to listen carefully.
"Code number is 02.34.8.5qB7." I could hear her faintly talking to someone. I couldn't help but think who could be in her house at this hour.
Curious, I hesitantly knocked on her door.
"Hazel..? Are you there?" I called out to her in a low voice, thinking that if she heard it, I'll have my phone back or else I'll have to come back tomorrow.
My question was followed by a series of loud thuds and clanking of steel rods, perhaps her wheelchair, and I stood there stunned by everything going on.
After a few moments, Hazel finally opened the door, almost roughly.
"Y-Yes? Did you need something?" She asked with a forced but tired smile. I could see sweat dripping from her forehead and the bags under her eyes seemed like the last time she slept must've been a year ago.
I eyed her suspiciously, "I heard you talking about some code. What's going on? Is everything alright? Why do you look so tired?" I showered her with concern, and leaned forward to take a peek inside the room but, as expected, she quickly blocked my view.
"It's nothing! I was just watching a movie! You must've heard it from there." She laughed nervously, and changed the topic, " So, what brings you here?"
"Oh, right. I came here to get my phone back. Our phones got switched." I smiled and handed her phone over to her. I knew it was definitely her voice but I tried to push down my suspicions.
She glanced at her phone and her eyes filled with realisation and also a glint of something else. Her jaws clenched in anxiety.
"Did you pick up any calls in that phone?" She asked.
"No. In fact, it's battery is dead." I shrugged.
"Oh, alright. That's good...." She exhaled deeply and mumbled inaudible words under her breath.
"Did you say something?" I asked, unable to hear her clearly.
"N-No..it's nothing. Just give me a minute, I'll go get your phone. Stay here and don't move." She told with a weak smile, and shut the door.
"Stay here and don't move? What's making her become so secretive all of a sudden? Oh, come to think of it, she has never invited me into her apartment too. I didn't realise she never told anything about herself apart from her past." My eyebrows shoot up in realisation.
I kept tapping my feet on the ground while waiting for her.
"Here's your phone..." Hazel cracked the door open ever so slightly that only her pale slender fingers could pass through the space.
"Thanks." I took the phone and flashed a small smile before leaving her to whatever she was doing in her cave.
I closed the door behind me and checked my phone.
"No calls..." I sighed.
I still couldn't help but think how weird it was for Hazel to act like that. She didn't look like the cheerful and bright girl I know— almost as if she was an introvert who doesn't socialize much.
Later that night, Noel arrived looking tired and worn out after his first day at work. He obviously hadn't told me anything since the facts related to the case shouldn't be disclosed to outsiders. After a quick bath, he seemed more relaxed and at ease so I decided to put out the topic of Hazel in front of him.
He plopped down on the couch and ruffled his wet hair with the towel hanging around his neck. I sat across him and asked, "Was Hazel always so secretive?"
Noel paused and looked at me with a frown, "Did something happen?"
I leaned back on the couch and sighed, "No..it's just..when I visited her apartment earlier, I heard her call out some random code number and it looked like she hadn't slept for days."
Noel's eyes grew slightly wide but it soon recovered back to his usual "I-don't-care" expression.
He shrugged, "She'll be alright. You're worrying too much."
"Am I?" I thought to myself
Days passed by with Noel going out for the investigation early in the morning before I wake up and Hazel locking herself inside her house for most time of the day. Naturally, I got worried about her and tried knocking at her door and calling out her name several times but no sound came from the other side of the door except for what seemed like continuous tapping of her fingers on a keyboard and clinking of cans as it fell on the floor. Those noises were the only evidence that proved her existence inside that apartment which saw no light for more than two weeks. I could have given her space if she was actually working, but as far as I know, she is merely a keeper of the orphanage. She isn't even legally an adult so it won't make sense for her to work on something that requires a keyboard. I wish I could just slam the door open and drag her out of that den to see the light of the day—Obviously it won't kill her to come out once in a while. But today, I didn

"What? They moved next door? What kind of scheme are they plotting now?" Noel's irritated voice shot through the speaker of my phone. After I returned back to my apartment, I explained everything to Hazel and called Noel to inform him about them moving into our building. At first, Sam and Aleck moving into our building didn't seem as suspicious as I thought it would be until I related the circumstances around which they'd come here — The killer was on the loose, Noel had been attacked and all of a sudden they appeared infront of the apartment I live in, which is originally Noel's.As expected, Noel too, thought that it was unsettling that they were moving next door. We couldn't help but think if they were related to Noel's assault in any way since they'd been holding a grudge against him since forever. I shared my theory with him but he seemed unsure and skeptical about it."But that's unlikely of them. They wouldn't dare to lay a finger
"Me? What makes you certain that it'll be me?" Puzzled, Hazel arched a brow at him slightly tilting her head.I glanced over at Hazel for a brief moment, to see if she's taking in the news well. But to my surprise, she didn't seem tensed at all. Does her death not bother her? Or perhaps she had made up her mind to face the worst and was taking the situation more practically.I snapped back from my swirling thoughts when I heard Noel speaking up."I'm not certain, of course. It's a hunch. That being aside, if the killer actually wants to kill the ones Rai cares about, he might have a personal reason for committing murder." He frowned, and then turned to meet my eyes, "Rai, have you ever offended anyone so deeply that made someone readily commit murder?"I took a minute to recall anyone that would have been hurt by me so deeply but I couldn't find anyone like that from my memories."I don't recall anyone
I couldn't stop thinking about the message when I was at the hospital where Noel was getting his surgery done. I felt sick and disgusted...and useless. I could only pray for him to be alive. Something wasn't sitting right with me that entire time. I couldn't comprehend why the killer was after Noel instead of me. I was the one to witness the murder, not Noel...then why? He doesn't even know that I was involved.Anxiety and unease filled my chest as I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly, waiting for the doctor, while Hazel's weeps were crystal clear in the cold and quiet hallway. Not a word slipped out of her mouth ever since the incident. She just kept crying for hours like that. The only words that ever came out of her mouth were, "It's all my fault...I shouldn't have brought him there.."I don't know how long they'd known each other but they certainly value each other like family. The door of the surgery room swung open.I immediately looked u
I began shuffling through my wardrobe for that one outfit I wanted to wear. My face lit up when my eyes caught the sight of the black jacket and white shirt under a pile of my clothes. "Ah, here it is!" I took them out with a big smile. I hadn't dressed up to go out for quite a while. I was so occupied with my part-time job and not to mention, taking a few trips to the police station for acquiring legal permission to get my charges off me, that is, with the help of Mr. Ryan.We were going to an amusement park. Hazel had suggested that I should take a day off from work since everything was becoming too tiring for me. I remembered Mira flashing an encouraging smile at me when she said, "I'll give you two days off. Go have some rest." I couldn't thank her enough for her kindness.Hazel was the one to propose the idea of an amusement park. Noel didn't really bother to come at first —He said he needed to "conserve energy" and that her idea was "ch
Days were flying by smoothly and everything returned back to normal—no more murders, and nol more threats. I stopped having nightmares about that night and my paranoia slowly faded away, too. Whereas for Noel and I, we've eventually become great friends over the past few months. Noel was really smart, but more than that, he was weird. I had seen him texting people with his phone upside down. He's too lazy to even switch on the lights in his room. I'd yelled at him several times when I saw the lights off as soon as I got home. But he just says, "Lazy is such an ugly word. I prefer the term 'selective participation'."Even though our differences stood as a barrier between us, his friendliness and weirdness eventually drew me closer to him and it gradually broke the wall between us. The awkwardness was no more there and it almost became an everyday routine for Hazel to hangout at our apartment as well.I h
After the murder of my manager, I started getting paranoid — I couldn't walk on the streets without my heart banging against my chest and my eyes wandering here and there, searching for anything suspicious. For all I know is that he could just come to my apartment this instant and kill me, but why isn't he doing it yet? Perhaps, does he yet not know where I live even though he killed my manager? I've no idea. I can't help but blame my unlucky self. If only I hadn't been late to work that day, I wouldn't have gotten into the night shift and taken a walk in the park, and all of this would have been prevented. The manager wouldn't have died. I couldn't imagine what his wife and children must be going through— and it's all because of me. I couldn't sleep the whole night. Just kept tossing and turning on my bed, thinking about a plan to save myself from this mess. I sunk so deep into my thoughts that I didn't realise that it had become morning already, that is
Last night was the most horrible and eventful night ever. I'd dressed the wound before going to sleep but I couldn't get even an ounce of sleep because of the stinging pain from the wound. I just kept tossing and turning on the bed restlessly. The very comfortable bed seemed like the most uncomfortable for me.Soon, my eyelids felt heavy and I forced myself to sleep. All the running had left me tired and worn out.*Next morning*I woke up to the familiar chirping of the birds and for once felt blessed to be surrounded by such beauty. I stretched my arms to wipe the grogginess away. The smile I had earlier was replaced by disdain when I felt blood oozing out of the dressing around my wounded arm."Ugh, the wound's open." I winced as I clutched the wound tightly with my other hand and got up from the bed.I was about to go change the dressing, when—
