LOGINAfter she left, I jumped into the shower. I had just laid back down on my bed and pulled out my phone to make a list of everything I could remember from my first life when the door opened.
“Pack your bags, Amy.” My mom came in, surprising me from the list I was making.
“What?” I looked up. “Why?”
“You are going to spend the summer with your father. I already got the approval from Vince, with a few guidelines.” Mom smiled down at me. “Come on, baby. Pack your bag and get ready.”
I jumped to my feet and ran to my mom. “I can go?”
“Just for the summer, baby, then you will be back here with me. I had to promise that you would be returning here.” She cupped my face. “Figure out a way to protect yourself while you are gone.”
I pouted. “Mom, I really don’t want to be here, and two months isn’t long enough for Brandon to give up on a mate.” I wanted to make them pay, but I wouldn’t risk him finding me.
“It’s okay, you will understand once you see your dad; he will be able to help you. I promise.” She patted my hair and kissed my cheek. “Now get ready.”
She left me to pack. I went into my closest and pulle4d out a suitcase. I packed my bag and then headed into my bathroom when I heard the downstairs door slam open.
“I fucking knew it.” I heard Shannon scream downstairs. I ignored her as I grabbed everything from my bathroom and then I grabbed my laptop and chargers. I stuffed everything into my backpack, locked my door and headed downstairs. “Why is it always you!” She whirled on me as I hit the landing. I just scoffed and rolled my bags to the front door.
“Shannon, why are you screaming?” Morgan was at the table with his coffee, pinching the bridge of his nose as my mom came out with a plate of food. “Amy, why do you have bags?”
My mom cut in before Shannon could go off. “Amy is leaving for the summer. Vince already approved it.”
Shannon’s eyes were shifting between her human eyes and her wolf’s. “It’s you!” She charged at me, and I kicked her, sending her flying.
“Amy!” Morgan jumped to his feet. “Don’t kick your sister.”
I huffed out a breath as I walked to the table. “She charged me. What was I supposed to do, allow her to hit me?” I shook my head. “Is this for me?” My mom nodded, sliding the plate in front of me as she fought not to laugh.
“Eat.” She coughed to cover a chuckle. “Shannon, get off the floor and just talk to us. Why are you so mad?”
Shannon growled as she got back up, and she pointed at me. “You are Brandon’s mate.” Everyone turned to face me, and I felt the blood drain from my face.
“You have no way of knowing that or not.” I struggled to cover the waiver in my voice. “I haven’t seen Brandon at all, and I won’t be able to sense my actual mate until late tonight. Stop making up stories before Brandon believes you.” I hoped my last words would be threat enough for her to keep her mouth shut.
I felt my mother's gaze burning into the back of my head before she chuckled. “Amy is right, Shan. There is no way to know that without the two of them seeing each other.”
Morgan jumped in too. “Why would you even think that?”
Shannon swiped at the drop of blood from her nose. “Because he smelled her on me.” She screamed. “I stole her dress to wear today, and he was all over me, more than normal. He asked whose clothes I was wearing.” She pointed at me. “Brandon is mine.”
I held up my hands in surrender. “I don’t want him.” There was a honk from outside.
“That’s for you.”
I nodded as I stood to kiss my mother goodbye before I left, but Shannon ran over to us and grabbed me. “Where are you going?” I rolled my eyes and shook her off.
I turned back to my mom and kissed her cheek. “I love you.”
She hugged me close. “Be safe at your father’s.” She patted my cheek before I turned to leave.
“Wait!” Shannon rushed to stand in front of the front door.
“What, Shannon?” I huffed out a breath as I grabbed my bags, but she refused to move out of the way as I went to open the door.
“Give me the key.”
“What?”
“Give me the key to your room.” She held out a hand in demand.
“I’m not going to do that.” I tried to push past her, but she growled and wrapped her hand around my wrist.
“You are going to give me the fucking key, or you are going to leave with a broken fucking arm.” She hissed into my ear.
I just laughed. Nix pushed to the surface, and I pulled back and punched her in the face. Morgan rushed over, trying to stop my next hit, but I kept hitting her until she let me go. Then I stood over her and allowed Nix full rein as she slammed her command into my words. “You are never allowed to step foot into my room again.” The command hit her, and she screamed as blood poured from her broken nose.
“Amy! You can’t command her.” Morgan yelled as he pulled me off his daughter.
“I think I just did.” I looked down at her. “You can’t use my clothes or whatever to entice your pathetic boyfriend anymore, Shannon.” I flung the door open.
“Stop right there.” Morgan tried to stop me from leaving. “I’m calling Vince. I don’t think you should be leaving.”
I pushed out the door, ignoring his command as his weak aura slipped off of me. “Send the guards after me then, Morgan, because I’m fucking leaving, and there is nothing you can fucking do about it.” I called over my shoulder before I walked to the car.
I opened the door and almost missed his whispered threat. “We will see about that.”
“Ugh.” A groan from behind the chair had me slapping my hand over my mouth. “Are you trying to kill me, pup?”“I’m sorry.” I looked at my dad, but he was currently bent over, dying of laughter. “Dad?”“Did you see how far he fell back?” Tears were trailing down his cheeks as he cackled. “Rude.” Ronnie stood and dusted off his shirt. “The both of you are rude.”“I really didn’t mean it to do it.” I turned to my dad. “What did I do wrong?”“Well, for one thing, you definitely weren’t thinking about the size of the wisp. All your power rushed to fulfil your wish, and it was as big as it could get.” My dad wiped his eyes and his laughter finally trailed off. “But Ronnie, you know it doesn’t cause harm.”“I know, but I have never seen one that big, and it scared the shit out of me. Sue me.” Ronnie settled back into the chair. “Try to picture it the size of a softball.” My dad motioned me to try again. I closed my eyes. “Iccas lumin torcanta.” I pictured the light a lot smaller than befo
“A Lycan?” I traced my finger over the picture. “I thought they were extinct.”“Most are. Only one left is the king.” My dad pulled the book away from me and switched back to the page he had originally settled on. “Lycans have two forms. A wolf, much bigger than a normal werewolf. And a half human half wolf form, like the ones you see in the movies. Weres can partially shift, but nothing that comes close to the wolfman form.” He pushed the book back in front of me. “Now I want you to focus on this spell and try to create a wisp without losing the change in your scent.”“A wisp?” I looked at the page and skimmed it. It was a step to step spell on how to create a wisp of light. A spell useful for seeing in the dark and one that doesn’t create heat so you can hold it for long periods of time without being burned. “Yeah, this was the first spell I learned from my grandmother. She said it is the safest option as a wisp has no way to ‘burn down the village’.” He smirked as his eyes took on
“Grandma.” My dad stood and went to grab for her but she held up her hand. “I’m not here, boy-o. Not really here. She pulled me to you with that.” She pointed to the book.“Your book of shadows. I thought it was lost.” He turned back to the book and hovered his hands over it. “It wasn’t lost, it was hidden.” She looked over at me and smiled. “It was found by who it was meant to be found by.” She walked over and hovered her hands around my father’s face, almost cupping it. “I’ve missed you. But I can’t stay. Watch out for the darkness.”“I love you.” His whisper was soft.“And I you.” She leaned down to kiss his forehead, and then she was gone.He looked over at me and I could see the devastation there. “You met her?”I nodded. “She helped me find myself, my inner self, anyway, so that I could find my power. Even then, the Moon Goddess had to give me a push.”“You met the moon goddess?” Ronnie lept up and rushed over.“I don’t actually know.” I lifted a shoulder and looked back at my
“Okay. Now let’s try removing your scent all together.” My father tossed out and I had to think. What removes a smell from the air, other than air fresheners or candles?“I know this will sound stupid…” Ronnie started, but I just scoffed.“I’m picturing a scented candle in my mind to protect me from my shitty mate. Something that shouldn’t work, and it’s just ridiculous. I don’t think we can get any worse.” He pointed at me and smiled. “True. I was just thinking, a vacuum. It sucks everything in.” I debated the idea.“It doesn’t have to be a perfect idea. Just something you can focus on while your power does the thing you need.” My dad stood and walked over to me. “It’s more about an outlet for your power to flow through. Your power will flow the way you intend it, but you need something to start it.”I closed my eyes again and pictured a vacuum in my clearing. I angled the hose up and plugged the vacuum into an outlet that appeared on the pot, and clicked it on. The noise was deafen
“Close you eyes.” I had barely wiped the sleep from my eyes when my dad sat me down in his office with Uncle Ronnie. I settled deeper into the chair and closed my eyes. “Now I want you to pull Nix closer to the surface until your eyes shift.“The wolfs bane?”“Won’t interfere. We waited the last two days to clear it from your system.” My father settled behind his desk. That made sense. I have been shut in my room for the last few days, doing my best not to shift. And staying clear of other wolves has been my saving grace. “Close your eyes Amy.” I nodded. “Once Nix is close to the surface, I am going to have Ronnie scent you. Once your scent has shifted, we can work on the next step.”“If Uncle Ronnie can scent me, won’t that screw me over?” I peeked out of one eye and my dad shook his head. “We won’t be shifting fully, just bringing Nix forward enough so we can tell when you manage cloaking yourself.” I closed my eye again and shook myself. “Nix, I need you to come closer.” I whispe
We made our way back to the house and into my father’s office before I saw anyone else. An omega brought in plates of rare steak. “Dad?” My stomach clenched looking at the meat. I couldn’t tell if I wanted it, or my body was rejecting the idea of eating it.“You need a lot of meat. You wolf is begging you to shift. It’s her time to shine now that the power portion has been handled. But you have things to worry about other than shifting, and this will help keep Nix under wraps.” He nudged the plate in front of me. “Try it. I know it probably doesn’t look appetizing, but I promise you, you will enjoy it.”I reached for a fork and knife, but my nails shifted to claws before I could wrap my fingers around the utensils. I snatched up the meat and tore into it, blood dripping from the meat. It was still so rare. Nix settled farther back into the forest in my mind’s eye, and Megan settled next to her. I’m sorry Amy. I seem to be losing control. Nix started to pace as I continued to tear int
