“Play it cool, princess,” Henry warned, “We’re being watched.”

“I’m sure you had a hand in my Devin’s demise, but you’re too much of a coward to admit it.”

I was overstepping and I knew it. I had eyes on me from his pack and my pack was ready to rumble.

Suddenly, the lights dimmed, setting a mood I wasn’t interested in.

Soft music began to play and Henry suddenly took me by the waist and guided me to the dance floor.

“I’m certain I hate you.”

“I’m certain we both have mutual feelings towards each other, but I watched you in that lagoon. I want you in my bed tonight.”

“I’m a hundred percent certain you’re delusional. ”

The feel of her body was exquisite.

I had to be as convincing as possible that nothing was happening between us and that we were cordial.

The mortal enemies we’d become seemed to radiate well off of my little minx.

She tried to keep her distance from me, but I kept her close, our bodies touching as we swayed to the music.

“You can’t hate me forever.”

“We can hate each other just the same, Henry. You hide behind your pack and your bravado.”

She said something, but I couldn’t hear her.

Wait.

She thought something and I DID hear her.

How was that possible?

“You don’t know me anymore, Henry. We’re not friends. We have nothing in common.”

Oh, but the feel of his body flush with mine was so divine.

“It doesn’t matter. You think I care if a woman has anything in common with me?” Henry rolled his eyes.

“You changed too much. Why?”

Henry didn’t answer.

He pulled me closer to him and I had no choice but to rest my head on his chest.

I took note of the lunas in his pack who were not at all thrilled at me dancing with their Alpha.

For some reason, that gave me great delight.

No matter what she thought of me, I was still the lesser evil.

I wondered if her mate would be kind to her. I know that if I was her mate, I’d show her what I could do in the bedroom chambers...she wouldn’t be able to walk for days.

She was a looker, I’d always thought that. Perhaps that was why I was jealous of her beau at one time, but I took it upon myself to end all of my connections with them.

Oddly enough it was after that night she was speaking of.

Now, why would I do that if I couldn’t recall hurting her in any way?

He wasn’t the lesser evil, but I could tell he thought he was.

Henry had been so good to us as kids, but now he was nothing but an arrogant alpha.

I had to admit that I enjoyed resting my head on his chest. He was warm and soothing, his heartbeat way too calming for me to admit.

“Hate me all you want, but we’re still here together.”

“That’s right!”

Kate, Henry’s cousin, jumped out from behind him, startling me and annoying her cousin.

“The oracles are about to name off the mates! I’m so excited!”

“I should go..”

Henry took me by the hand and led me to his table.

“You’ll sit with me until your mate is announced.”
