With long black hair flowing behind, her dark blue suited figure streaked past the reception, skilfully navigating through the stream of people, bumping a few in her way.
“Sorry” Jane retorted, still in her stride. The receptionist, Lisa, and other suited persons were left in utter confusion.“What’s going on?” “What’s happening?” “Where’s she going?” they mumbled.Still in the elevator, her personal assistant, Alice Gerrard, could barely keep up. ‘How could anyone wearing heels move so fast?’ she thought, struggling to hang onto some office documents, apologise to everyone, and keep track of her boss at the same time.Pushing open the doors, Jane quickly hops down the entrance stairs, before jumping straight into the back seat of the company car her assistant called. She sat back, face crunched down in her hands, wishing more than anything for the ground to swallow her whole that very moment. The startled driver looked out and saw a quick stepping Alice gesturing him to get ready to go as she approached. Starting the car, he zoomed off as soon as Alice got in.“Why does this keep happening?” her face still buried in her hands, Jane asked, pain and frustration in her voice.“I’m sorry Miss Pearson, it’s all my fault, if I had arranged the files better this wouldn’t have happened.” Alice said, attempting to console her boss.“No, no. it’s my fault,” she replied, sitting up straight, head facing upwards, holding back tears. Her spirits were down. “I always jump to conclusions and end up overreacting. I basically scarred that poor boy for life.”“I think ‘scarred for life’ is a bit of an exaggeration, but he was definitely terrified from the look on his face.”“Thank god you stopped me before I said something really, really bad.” Jane said, exhaustion written all over her face, as she shoots a sad smile towards Alice. “And now another reason for them to hate me.”“You’re not hated Miss Pearson, just.…misunderstood.”“Sure ‘misunderstood’” chuckling, “I seem to be having a lot of these misunderstandings at work lately,” she adds with sad one raised eyebrow, “almost as if…”For a split second, Jane’s complexion changes, floating a puzzled look on her face. Alice leans towards her, focusing intently on Jane, adjusting her glasses by the frame to get a proper look at her boss, but Jane only stares into space, recalling all the altercations she’s been having.“You’re not seriously thinking these incidents were planned, are you? Miss Pearson.” Alice askes, fear and concern in her voice.“Of course not, don’t be silly. What would anyone stand to gain from making me look bad? These have all just been some unfortunate moments, nothing more nothing less.” Jane said, in an attempt to put her assistant at ease. “And also, how many times do I have to tell you that you can just call me Jane.”“I’m sorry Miss Pears… I mean Jane.”“No need to apologize, it’s just a bit weird since you’re just a year younger than me. It makes me feel like an old lady, you know?”“Okay.”“Anyways, now I just want to go home and have a soak to take all this stress off my mind.” Jane said lowering the tinted window to get some fresh air. She seemed to be feeling better. But something was off, and Jane knew it the moment she looked out. They were nowhere near her home; in fact, this part of town was completely foreign to her. The air was a bit salty and hinted the taste of raw fish, there were more vans than she would usually see; most of the cars here where totally different than what she would see in her circles. The only familiarity there was a tinted black executive car on the adjacent lane behind them, which she saw while sticking her head out the window. For some reason she couldn’t keep her eyes of it, it was suspicious, it looked to be on their trail, like it was ‘smartly following from a distance?’ she thought, memorizing its license plateThe sound of a loud horn in the distance brought her senses back, helping her realize where she was. She was at the docks and didn’t know why. Immediately Jane turned her bewildered gaze to the driver, questioning what was happening.“Amos! What’s going on? Why are we here?” she inquired as her voice rose steadily. But the man who turned to reply her was most definitely not Amos: Janes company driver. His face looked rugged, like someone who had been in many fights.“You’ll find out soon enough.” he said with a hoarse voice and a wicked smile which was missing a couple of teeth.Alice eyes widened as Jane froze in place, confused at what was happening.“And don’t even think about trying to escape, my partners are out there watching and waiting.” The strange man continued.Jane recalls the black executive car she saw earlier. “Who are you? What do you want? If it’s money then we can settle this here and now.”“No. No. No. What we want is a lot more than just money.” their kidnapper replies with a deviant smile supposing foul intentions.Jane instantly tells Alice to quickly “call the cops.” her demeanour was surprisingly calm given the situation, but her assistant, on the other hand, was the opposite, she was frozen still, petrified by fear.Alice raises her trembling arm and reaches into her hand, searching of her phone. The panicked look in her eyes gave Jane a lot to think about.‘This is really bad.’ Jane thought ‘In her current state it would be a bad idea to try anything.’For some reason both their phones were dead.“Don’t bother. By the time the police get her we would already be done with you.” The driver said to discourage them.Alice smiled back at him, looking deeply into his eyes. In the moment, she felt as though it was just the two of them in the room, with their long pause of silence.“Ahem.” Blake coughed, calling them back to reality.“Oh, pardon me, Miss Pearson, this is my good friend, Blake.” Michael said, gesturing both his arms towards Blake. Blake raised his right hand, waving politely and smiling softly. “Hi!”“And Blake, this is my Boss, Miss Pearson.” Michael continued, now directing his hands to Jane.“Please, call me Jane.” Jane said, returning Blakes wave. “Okay, Jane.” Blake replied.Jane smiled at him. “I would also prefer it if you called me by my name too.” She said, facing Michael.“I don’t think that’s right.” Michael said.“What?” Jane asked.“Calling you by your name like that.” He responded.“And why’s that?” Jane asked again, slightly annoyed.“Because you’re my Boss.” He said firmly.Jane pouted her face, Michael was slightly annoyed, as they aggressively stared at one another
Looking into his eyes, Michael saw that he was set on Jane. Time slowed down immediately; the man was already too close for Michael to react properly.Without many options, he quickly turned himself into a human shield to protect Jane. Spreading his arms wide in anticipation. The man lunged in, aiming his knife on Michael’s center. Without delay, Michael grabbed his assailant by the wrist as they struggled, pushing Jane to the ground.Onlookers at first were baffled by what was going on, before a lady on the other side of the street yelled. “HELP! HE’S GOT A KNIFE!” causing an instant panic.Their tussle, which lasted only moments, felt like hours to Jane, who sat helplessly on the street, using her arm behind her to weigh herself up against the ground.Michael pushed hard, his assailant pushed just as hard, in a backwards tug of war, neither of them giving in. Michael kicked him on the shin, forcing him to fall.On his way down he took Michael with him, as they landed chaotically on
Michael was surprised to be getting a call from Jane all of a sudden. And why was is she using Alice’s phone, ‘Was Alice in hurt?’, he thought to himself.Quicky getting up from his seat, Michael sobered up instantly to the bewilderment of Blake. The thought of Alice in danger put his mind in focus.“Where are you know?” He asked Jane over the phone with urgency.“I’m in front of the coffee shop on main street.” Jane was a little freaked out by his tone.“I’m on my way.” He said quickly, ending the call without a second thought.“What’s going on?” Blake asked, seeing the determination on Michael’s face.“Sorry, I need to go.” Michael said turning away from his friend.Blake immediately grabbed Michael’s hand, stooping him from leaving, as Michael struggled to free himself. “Hold it there, friend.” Blake said calmly. “You’re in no condition to be rushing anywhere.”“I need to go, she’s in danger.” Michael said urgently.“Who’s in danger?” Blake was still calm.“Alice, I need to go see
Calling Michaels number, Alice waited for a short while before he answered. She was silent as she held the phone to her ear.“Hello, who is this?” Michael spoke through the phone.“Hey Mike, it’s Alice.” She said softly.Michael went quiet for a minute before he finally said, “Hey.”“Hey.” Alice said. “Hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time?” her voice was calm and gentle.“No, no, I’m good to talk now, since I left work early.” He said quickly, as though he was nervous. “Yeah, me too, weird day at the office.” She said with a hint of humor. There was another awkward silence as Michael didn’t what to say, it was his fault she left office early.“Look, Alice, I’m so sorry about what I did, I had no right to kiss you all of a sudden, I was tired and wasn’t thinking straight…” He said quickly without stop.Alice laughed, “It’s all right, I liked it.” She said smiling, kicking her feet on the bed. “Besides, I think I kind of… forced your hand with my confession.”“I’m confused, so you’re
Michael’s eyes widened as he stared fixatedly at Sharon, who looked back at him with beseeching eyes.“WHAT!?” He yelled out in a whisper.“I have reason to believe that someone is harm her at the party this weekend.” Sharon said, looking straight at the elevator doors.“Why do you think that? Do you have a source?” Michael asked. Michael askes, turning his head away from her.“After these recent events I’m sure that even you can see that she is in danger, Mr. undercover agent.”Michael turned back at her with surprise written all over his face. She just smiled as she continued to look at the door.“H-how did you find out?” There was no use denying it, Michael knew Sharon was a brilliant lady who didn’t say things without certainty.“Come on, you think I would hire you without knowing everything first?”Michael dropped his head, his cover was blown, he might as well just quit here and now, but then he realized that she already knew before, which only confused him.“Why did you hire me
“Did I say something wrong sir?”Hector, realizing he was overreacting, regained his composure, quickly picking up a picture off his desk. It was a photo of Jane with Alice standing beside her.“May I remind you that, inter office relationships are prohibited.” Hector said.Michael seemed confused by this. “But sir, this isn’t stated anywhere within the company’s rules and guidelines.”“How dare you question me.” Hectors temper rose again. “And there’s no way you know the entire company’s rules and guidelines, after being here for just two days.”“Sorry to disappoint you sir, but I take my job very seriously.” Michael retorted, pride in his voice. “I’ve made it my duty to know what goes on within the company.”Hector’s anger began to increase. He didn’t expect the meeting to go like this, he had hoped that Michael would be that someone he could easily control.“Look here son, if you try anything to go against me, you won’t only lose your job; you’ll lose everything you ever had.” Hect
