I read the notice once, and it sounded wrong in my head.

It was noon, and sixty students stood in front of the notice board outside the dining hall. I counted them without meaning to. They were about sixty-two. They pressed close together, and nobody was talking. The notice was pinned in the middle of the board on cream paper, with the Board’s round seal pressed into red wax at the top.

By Order of the Board.

XavierI read the notice once, and it sounded wrong in my head.It was noon, and sixty students stood in front of the notice board outside the dining hall. I counted them without meaning to. They were about sixty-two. They pressed close together, and nobody was talking. The notice was pinned in the middle of the board on cream paper, with the Board’s round seal pressed into red wax at the top.By Order of the Board.Under that were four short lines. Elvira Giamatti. Placement withdrawn. Consent of guardians: received. The school wishes her well. I counted the words under the heading. Thirteen. It was a plain notice, and it said what the Board wanted it to say.Below it, held by a single pin, was a smaller sheet of cream paper with handwriting on it. A letter. I leaned in and read it.Dear Headmistress, Our Ellie writes that she is happy and doesn’t want a fuss. Thank you for everything the school has done. We hope you will let her go quietly. With love. There was no signature. Only a

ElianoI was on my knees in the laundry room, speaking to a pile of sheets. It was eight o’clock in the morning, and I hadn’t slept. The room was long and hot, with steam hanging under the low ceiling and washing lines strung from wall to wall. Baskets of clean linen stood in rows. One of the piles, at the far end under the last line, had moved when I came in. Then it had gone still.“I’m not going to shout,” I said quietly. “I’m not going to take you to Pruitt. I only want to talk.”Nothing answered.“You’re not in trouble. Nobody is angry at you. I need your help, and I think you’re the only one who can help me.”The sheets shook. A hand came out and pulled the sheets tight again to cover him properly.I had found him the hard way. Pruitt’s patrol had searched the girls’ hall at first light and found nothing. Now the whole school had started telling stories. Some said she had run away. Rafael had told me at dawn, on the cold steps, the one thing he had heard Albert say, very quietly

ElviraThe stone against my cheek was cold on one side of my face and warm on the other.I lay still and tried to work out why. My eyes were open, but I couldn’t make sense of what I saw. The stone was dark and rough with a crack running across it. My head hurt behind my eyes, and my mouth was dry and tasted bitter. Then I remembered the hand.I sat up so fast that the room turned. I pressed both palms to the floor and waited for it to stop. The stone was colder under my left hand and warmer under my right. I didn’t understand that yet. What I understood was that I was not in Room 68 anymore.I checked myself, because that was the first practical thing to do. My arms moved. My legs moved. My head had no bump that I could find. I still had my coat on, buttoned wrong, and both my shoes. Nothing was broken or bleeding. Whoever had taken me had not wanted to hurt me, and I did not know if that was good news. Then I looked up.The room was round. It was about the size of my dorm room, with

RafaelBy half past twelve, I had decided that I would open the handle of Room 68, because no one else was going in.I stood on the front steps of the dormitory hall with the other three and watched Sir Albert try to answer a question he had asked himself. He had told us that Mrs. Pruitt’s guards woke him an hour ago. He said they told him Miss Giamatti had not come down from her floor. So he had decided to come at once.“Then go and find her,” Gideon said. His voice was rough. “You stood on those steps today and told over four hundred students she was right. So tell me, why is she gone suddenly?”“Nobody is to go into the girls’ hall tonight,” Albert said, ignoring Gideon. “That is an order. Mrs. Pruitt will search at first light, with her full patrol. I want all of you in your beds. Now.”“First light is five hours away.”“Gideon.” Eliano still had hold of his sleeve. He was holding it harder than he needed to.I stood closest to the rail, a little behind them, where I always stood s

ElianoMy father’s car pulled away from the gate at ten past ten, and I was already running.I didn’t look back at it. I had sat through three hours at a long table with a linen cloth and silver knives, and my father had said almost nothing. He had asked the waiter for water. He had asked me if my coat was warm enough. Near the end, he set down his glass and said, “You will not stand at that lectern again.” That was all. He didn’t say her name. He didn’t say anything about the school, the Flame Roll, or the word I had said out loud in front of four hundred people. I said, “Yes, Father,” because the other answer would have started something I couldn’t finish in a restaurant. Now I ran up the long path with my coat open and my hands shaking. I had spent the whole evening holding still, and my legs were glad to move. I reached the boys’ wing, climbed to my room, and sat on my bed in the dark. I was too angry to turn on the lamp. I had no idea who I was angry at.—⨝—At eleven o’clock, so

  • CHASED BY FOUR MATES AT WOLFORD ACADEMY   Chapter 85: Nine O’Clock

ElviraThe back staircase had one lamp, and it was out.The time was ten minutes to nine when I stood on the bottom step with the staircase door closed behind me. I let my eyes adjust to the darkness. The only light came from a crack under the door at the top of the first flight of stairs, where the front stairs ran on the other side of the wall. I could hear boots on that side. Two guards on every landing, Pruitt had said, since noon. Nobody had told me whether anyone watched this stair.I had one thing to go on. Weeks ago, Daphne was bored in the common room and I read the whole patrol timetable out loud from a sheet she found. I had only half listened. But I remembered it now. The front stair guards swapped at ten minutes to the hour. For about four minutes the landings were nearly empty, because one pair walked up while the other walked down. The back stairs was not on the list at all. That ten minutes was nowI climbed the stair. The stone was cold through my shoes, and the rail
